Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks 2020- Week 9

This is Week 9 of our adventure in Pickling Pigskin Picks. Janice won last week. It could also be “Weak” 9, as 9 of the teams have losing or even seasons, including usually mighty LSU, and the tie-breaker teams of TCU and Baylor, both of which have been good teams recently

So, here they are, 20 teams waiting for you to choose them to win, and, hopefully, we can have someone with a perfect 10. We came close last week, with Janice getting 8 right, so she picked the tie breaker game.

Psalm 77

I cried out to God for help;
    I cried out to God to hear me.
When I was in distress, I sought the Lord;
    at night I stretched out untiring hands,
    and I would not be comforted.

I remembered you, God, and I groaned;
    I meditated, and my spirit grew faint.
You kept my eyes from closing;
    I was too troubled to speak.
I thought about the former days,
    the years of long ago;
I remembered my songs in the night.
    My heart meditated and my spirit asked:

“Will the Lord reject forever?
    Will he never show his favor again?
Has his unfailing love vanished forever?
    Has his promise failed for all time?
Has God forgotten to be merciful?
    Has he in anger withheld his compassion?”

10 Then I thought, “To this I will appeal:
    the years when the Most High stretched out his right hand.
11 I will remember the deeds of the Lord;
    yes, I will remember your miracles of long ago.
12 I will consider all your works
    and meditate on all your mighty deeds.”

13 Your ways, God, are holy.
    What god is as great as our God?
14 You are the God who performs miracles;
    you display your power among the peoples.
15 With your mighty arm you redeemed your people,
    the descendants of Jacob and Joseph.

16 The waters saw you, God,
    the waters saw you and writhed;
    the very depths were convulsed.
17 The clouds poured down water,
    the heavens resounded with thunder;
    your arrows flashed back and forth.
18 Your thunder was heard in the whirlwind,
    your lightning lit up the world;
    the earth trembled and quaked.
19 Your path led through the sea,
    your way through the mighty waters,
    though your footprints were not seen.

20 You led your people like a flock
    by the hand of Moses and Aaron.

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks 2020- Week 8

Another week, another Pickled Pigskin Picks. Here are your ten choices. Now, as you read through the list, marvel at something we in the Middle Mississippi Valley marvel at: Iowa State is ranked and Iowa is not. Usually, Iowa State is just rank, but not this year. (FYI- “rank” is synonymous with the smell of your average Iowa hog farm.)

Chas won it last week and picked the tie breaker. ost years there is no question as to the result when anyone but Alabama or Auburn played LSU, but this year. This year LSU is rank.

Get your choices in before NOON EDT Saturday.

  1. Nebraska @ #5 Ohio State

  2. #23 NC State @ #14 North Carolina

Psalm 70

Hasten, O God, to save me;
    come quickly, Lord, to help me.

May those who want to take my life
    be put to shame and confusion;
   may all who desire my ruin
    be turned back in disgrace.
May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”
    turn back because of their shame.
But may all who seek you
    rejoice and be glad in you;
   may those who long for your saving help always say,
    “The Lord is great!”

But as for me, I am poor and needy;
    come quickly to me, O God.
   You are my help and my deliverer;
    Lord, do not delay.

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks 2020- Week 7

It’s here: Lucky Week 7. Okay, so I don’t believe in luck, but seven is the perfect number. So, hopefully, someone will score a perfect 10 this week. Psalm 64

A psalm of David.

Hear me, my God, as I voice my complaint;
    protect my life from the threat of the enemy.

Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked,
    from the plots of evildoers.
They sharpen their tongues like swords
    and aim cruel words like deadly arrows.
They shoot from ambush at the innocent;
    they shoot suddenly, without fear.

They encourage each other in evil plans,
    they talk about hiding their snares;
    they say, “Who will see it?”
They plot injustice and say,
    “We have devised a perfect plan!”
    Surely the human mind and heart are cunning.

But God will shoot them with his arrows;
    they will suddenly be struck down.
He will turn their own tongues against them
    and bring them to ruin;
    all who see them will shake their heads in scorn.
All people will fear;
    they will proclaim the works of God
    and ponder what he has done.

10 The righteous will rejoice in the Lord
    and take refuge in him;
    all the upright in heart will glory in him!

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks 2020- Week 6

This week is different. Idaho Mike won the game last week and I told him, as I usually do, to pick the tie breaker game. I said, “What’ll it be, Mike?” He misunderstood and picked all 10 games. (Nepotism!) That’s okay, he hasn’t done this very often. It saved me a little time. I did change a couple of his games. When I do the Pillow Fight, I base it on the ESPN.com Bottom 10, which lists the worst college football teams. So I try to get two teams with fewer than 2 wins. His choice was okay, but I moved it up to the # 5 position here, removing a gimmie game, and picked two losing teams. So, I hope he doesn’t mind.

Whatever your picks, you have until NOON EDT Saturday to select all 10 winners and the score of the tie breaker. (Good choice, by the way, Mike.)

1. Tennessee @ Georgia

2. Florida State @ Notre Dame

3. Texas Tech @ Iowa State

4. Marshall @ Western Kentucky

5. Central Arkansas @ Arkansas State

6. Temple @ Navy

7. Virginia Tech @ North Carolina

8. North Carolina State @ Virginia

9. Pillow Fight: Middle Tennessee (0-4) @ Florida International (0-1)

10. Tie Breaker  – predict the winner and final score: (drum roll, please!) Miami @ Clemson.

Psalm 59

Deliver me from my enemies, O God;
    be my fortress against those who are attacking me.
Deliver me from evildoers
    and save me from those who are after my blood.

See how they lie in wait for me!
    Fierce men conspire against me
    for no offense or sin of mine, Lord.
I have done no wrong, yet they are ready to attack me.
    Arise to help me; look on my plight!
You, Lord God Almighty,
    you who are the God of Israel,
   rouse yourself to punish all the nations;
    show no mercy to wicked traitors.

They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,
    and prowl about the city.
See what they spew from their mouths—
    the words from their lips are sharp as swords,
    and they think, “Who can hear us?”
But you laugh at them, Lord;
    you scoff at all those nations.

You are my strength, I watch for you;
    you, God, are my fortress,
10  my God on whom I can rely.

   God will go before me
    and will let me gloat over those who slander me.
11 But do not kill them, Lord our shield,
    or my people will forget.
   In your might uproot them
    and bring them down.
12 For the sins of their mouths,
    for the words of their lips,
    let them be caught in their pride.
   For the curses and lies they utter,
13  consume them in your wrath,
    consume them till they are no more.
   Then it will be known to the ends of the earth
    that God rules over Jacob.

14 They return at evening,
    snarling like dogs,
    and prowl about the city.
15 They wander about for food
    and howl if not satisfied.
16 But I will sing of your strength,
    in the morning I will sing of your love;
   for you are my fortress,
    my refuge in times of trouble.

17 You are my strength, I sing praise to you;
    you, God, are my fortress,
    my God on whom I can rely.

Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks 2020- Week 5

I like the number 5. It’s the first part of 57 and the last part of 75. And you know why I like those numbers. Well, here’s a number a lot of people like: 10. Let’s see if one of us can get that number this week. At least one game will make it hard: the Top 10 matchup of Auburn at Georgia. Well, I guess the Pillow Fight could cause a problem, but for a different reason. Anyway, the Tie Breaker is the first of the Commander-in-Chief Trophy games with the Navy voyaging to Colorado to face the Air Force Academy.

Press on, folks. Just get those guesses in by HIGH NOON EDT Saturday.
