Good Morning!
It’s Friday!!!
On this day in 1848 the dental chair was patented by M. Waldo Hanchett.
In 1944 the Allied forces of World War II landed in southern France.
In 1949, in San Francisco, a stunt leap off the Golden Gate Bridge was performed for the first time.
In 1970 Mrs. Pat Palinkas became the first woman to play in a pro football game when she held the ball for the Orlando, FL, Panthers.
And in 1997 the U.S. Justice Department decided not to prosecute FBI officials in connection with the deadly 1992 Ruby Ridge siege in Idaho.

L. had a great second day of high school… Met lots of new kids and had a group of girls to sit with at lunch. There are quite a few kids from the private elementary school she attended K-5, so she’s having fun reconnecting with all of them. There are 140 freshman–the largest class they’ve ever had. They are going on a retreat Sunday to Monday where they’ll engage in ropes courses and other team-building exercises. I think it’s a fantastic idea; a way to forge friendships quickly and bond them as a class.

A snake! Aj, no snakes allowed! I hope I don’t dream about this guy.
Even Chas said that the snake had to go.
Get rid of the snake or he ……

You can come out now Jo. The snake is gone. 🙂
What’s funny is that the thing was only about 5 or 6 inches long. He was tiny.

A beautiful tribute on Facebook this morning to someone who used to hang out with us:
My birth mother, Lise, came to the U.S. with her parents from Stavanger, Norway. Upon giving birth and placing me with an adoption agency in New York, i, Charles Peter Frostad, was adopted by a wonderful family who desired to love and provide for as an additional child of their own. Beginning in my early 20’s and sporadically throughout my late 30’s, i would search for my birth parents. Any piece of background information i could find to hopefully bring some understanding and possibly some closure; i would joyfully accept it. After finally having made contact with my birth mother five years ago, she said to me on a couple of occasions that she had always felt more than my birth mother, as though there were a spiritual umbilical cord that no piece of paper or legal construct could sever and that she was right in God’s grace as He was holding her hand before she even knew it. There’s this old Norwegian saying that coincidence is God’s way of staying anonymous. Conversely then, since He has not remained anonymous to her and i, our mother-son connection (and re-connection decades later) couldn’t be any more less than anonymous. Mom will be laid to rest today.

I know, I’m weird as women go. But a few weeks ago when my husband and I were walking, I had stopped to take a photo of a flower or a bird. My husband was behind me, and he told me to be perfectly still, and he told me why. There was a snake right behind me. Now, some women might need to be told to stay still lest they be bitten or lest they be frightened. But he knew me and knew I wouldn’t want to spook the snake, that I’d want a picture of it. They’re frightfully hard to photograph (they move quickly and parts of them may be hidden behind grass), but I did get two quick pictures as it headed off into the grass.

Sweet, sweet post, Kim.
Glad to know school is off to a good start, Annms.
I would have enjoyed seeing the little snake…I know there are little ones because I picked one up and threw it to get it out of the way of the lawnmower once. It was harmless and I did not want to destroy it. It may have eaten a misquito that would have infected me with W. Nile. I would not pick up a snake that was bigger or looked dangerous. I would try to find a broom or something to scurry it away.
I just finished writing a Christmas inspirational story for possible inclusion in Divine Christmas moments being compiled by Yvonne Lehman. Proceeds from the book will go to charity. Just thought there may be someone on here who might want to write a story to submit. There is no compensation for the story, but it will be used for a good cause. The first book, Divine Moments, is on Amazon in case you are interested.
Another nice bird picture, and I like the tree, too!
Bosley is being difficult lately. I suspect it is because she got spoiled with son and me at home giving her lots of attention and now she is having to adjust again to spending some long hours alone. I was hopeful to see the new office dog, but co-worker is out helping care for a relative who had a bad fall. The dog’s name is Max.

I’m disappointed I missed the snake – this last weekend I was out catching garter snakes for my son’s girlfriend – she too likes snakes. I especially like the little ones. The bigger ones, I just watch and don’t touch, but I’ll gladly pick up a smaller one 🙂 We babysat a corn snake for a friend’s son once. I kept it in my shirt pocket and it would poke it’s little head out and flick it’s tongue.

Ugh. Let’s see, a a toddler I was almost bitten by a ground rattler. In elementary school, my parents had a garden. Somehow a snake got in the washing machine and when my mother took the clothes out to put in the dryer, it bit her. I am much better now, but even a photo of a snake used to catch my breath and make my heart skip a beat. A live one ….can’t handle it. I know the ones I see on TV aren’t real but I will turn my head away until that scene is over. I know there are good snakes out there, but I will leave it to the rest of you to sort out.

It’s “Funnies” day. “Funny” (ironic) that Chas mentioned the new golf term, as a few of the funnies use Obama’s golfing as the main point.

I guess I missed the snake picture. I have no problems with snakes, unless they are where they don’t belong (like the tunnel leading to a tour cave).

None of you remember, but golfing was used to define Eisenhower also. Thing is, he managed the country well. Not great, but well. He usually did the right thing.

We have rattlesnakes here in one of our hiking areas just a couple miles from my house where it’s popular to off-leash dogs. I’ve never seen a snake on my property.

I was friends with Lise on FB but hadn’t seen anything posted by her in sometime. She was quite active a few years ago, though, and someone connected to something one of my ‘friends’ posted — can’t remember now what it was, some kind of shared life event, but Lise saw it, reached out and expressed concern — and next thing I knew the two of them, strangers on opposite coasts connected only by me, were ‘friends’ with each other on FB.
I thought, well this will be interesting. They’re diametrically opposed to each other politically but I suspect they don’t know that yet.
Lise wasn’t shy about posting her political thoughts. My other friend did so less frequently, but I knew she was a very strong Obama supporter, a longtime liberal. Only a matter of time, I suppose.
A couple days after one of Lise’s biting political posts, I noticed they were no longer ‘friends.’ 🙂

I am afraid of worms on a hook that wriggle around. It seems like awful torture. Also, worms that have been done in by a big rain that washed them onto concrete, etc., so that they later end up frying in the hot sunshine after the rain. That is pretty scary, too. Worms discovered in fresh dirt can be fun when you pick them up and release them so they can go back to life as normal. That is sorta like catch and release fishing in dirt instead of water. You might guess my father had a lovely garden in which such interesting things could be discovered when I was young. 🙂

I pick up worms and put them back into the grass or soft ground. Worms around here are like bees. The ground is so poor that I need all of them. I could dig up the entire garden and get almost the same amount of earthworms that I got in a shovelfull in Annandale.

I started to tell this earlier, but got embarrassed.
But decided, So What?
So: We lived in a split level in Annandale, Bathroom just upstairs from the kitchen.
I was upstairs shaving when I heard this terrible scream.
I immediately ran down stairs in my shorts to rescue her from whatever.
She was shucking corn and found a worm.
It was half an hour before that became funny.

At this point, some readers might raise an objection: How was it possible for Bill Clinton to campaign all-out for Barack Obama while wishing to see him lose? How does that make sense?
It only makes sense if we stop to remember that politicians are different from you and me. Relations among politicians are not about sentiment. Politicians resemble nation-states; they don’t have friends so much as they have permanent interests. In the case of Bill and Hillary, their “”nation-state” was the Clinton Brand.

Question: does anyone know a way common everyday folk can make files that can be made into PDF files? Is there, for example, an inexpensive program where one can import text and photos and save them as PDF files?

Now that I am home again, Bosley has plopped down on my lap and is purring loudly. I would like to go get the mail, but how dare I leave her again? Could I be so cruel? I guess if she were a dog, I could just say “Fetch,” and the problem would be easily resolved. Cats just don’t understand the concept of “Fetch!” My father use to use the expression, “You are like an old sow with an ear of corn.” Cats must be like pigs in that respect. They take the treat and run with it. My mail box probably has a book in it. Bosley would take the book to be her new scratching post. What are words on paper to a cat? Cats make great editors, in other words. They shred with the best of them. 🙂
Bosley moved over to sit atop my husband’s laptop. She recognizes the word lap and thinks she owns it. I better go get the mail while I have the chance. Too late! She’s in my lap again. Now she’s back on the laptop. She is not a contented kitty today.

I have a computer question, too. On email how do I set up one name to list a whole group? I think that can be done rather than having to copy the list or put each name on separately each time I need to send an email to the same group. This is for a prayer team. Thanks to any who have time to answer.

Cheryl, I do my newsletters in powerpoint and then save each page as a jpeg. Works so much better than Word. Pictures do not move unless you move them. Also makes the file very small. I do not decrease the size of my pictures.

Peter, I have some of the automatic features turned off, but I have a few others I added (like changing regular quotation marks to “smart quotes”–the quotation marks that curve). I detest the “toolbars” in the latest version of Word, and the fact that some things I used all the time cannot even be added to the top thingy now (small caps, for example). They had something that mostly worked–why mess with it? Worse, they “fixed” some things that worked, and didn’t fix some that didn’t.
