Good Morning!

On this day in 1774 the first session of the U.S. Continental Congress convenes in Philadelphia. The delegates drafted a declaration of rights and grievances, organized the Continental Association, and elected Peyton Randolph as the first president of the Continental Congress.

In 1836 Sam Houston was elected as the first president of the Republic of Texas.

In 1881 the American Red Cross provided relief for a disaster for the first time. The disaster was the Great Fire of 1881 in Michigan.

In 1906 Bradbury Robinson executed the first legal forward pass in football. Robinson threw the ball to Jack Schneider of St. Louis University in a game against Carroll College.

In 1914 Babe Ruth hit his first home run as a professional player in the International League. 

In 1917 federal raids were carried out in 24 cities on International Workers of the World (IWW) headquarters. The raids were prompted by suspected anti-war activities within the labor organization.

And in 1930 Charles Creighton and James Hagris completed the drive from New York City to Los Angeles and back to New York City all in reverse gear. The trip took 42 days in their 1929 Ford Model A. I have no idea why, I guess it was because they could.

Today is also John Stewart’s birthday. No, not THAT Jon Stewart.

  5. Just to relate my life to the rest of you. I was so excited today that the store got eggs in. They actually had to send a truck to a town about 2 hours away to get them. I eat eggs everyday and didn’t mind if I had to switch breakfast foods, but the store was also out of oatmeal and the cold cereal selection was not good at all. Thankful for small blessings.

  11. I am awake and about to head to the orthodontist. Baby Girl gets her braces off this morning. I am taking her to Chik Fil A for breakfast afterwards.
    Lulabelle is going back to the shelter today to be spade. She went to the vet yesterday to get her shots. She has been irritating Amos this morning. She thinks all the dog toys are for her and they aren’t.

  12. It’s funny to watch puppies try to play with the older dogs at the dog park.

    Dogs have all kinds of signs and signals they give when they want the puppy to go away. But puppies never pick up on the hints, they are convinced everyone wants to play with them.

    Eventually, the adult dog will snap which can freak some puppies out — but others still don’t “get it.” They keep coming back for more. “Play with me! Play with me! I’m so cute!”

    Tess really dislikes puppies which is why I can’t really trust her off leash at the dog park anymore.

    And, yes, it is almost 5 a.m. out here.

    We’re now in our 2nd or 3rd back-to-back heat wave. It’s supposed to cool off just a little for the weekend and then another heat wave is forecast for next week.

    We usually get the worst of our summer heat around the same time (September/October) the rest of the country is heading into fall.

    73% said “yes”.
    I’ll bet those ready for winter are zero.
    The good thing about spring is that summer follows.
    The bad thing about fall is that winter follows.
    Some prefer winter over summer, but not many.

  15. Good morning, all. Good evening, Jo.

    Just about to walk Becca to the bus stop. I’m feeling much better than yesterday. L. was up ’til midnight last night doing homework. We spent the afternoon running around getting last minute things for the horse show this weekend. She’s in all AP classes and had a bunch of projects due today as well as some completely pointless assignments where she had to decorate her binders with pictures that represent things about her. She learns nothing from this activity, but it’s extremely time intensive. I used to abhor projects like that. Still do.

    I have plans to visit a private, Lutheran school tomorrow. They have two spots open for second grade. I tried to talk to Hubby about it last night, but he wasn’t very enthusiastic about it. There was a fatal stabbing at a high school about 8 miles from our house. It was in a different district from us, but awfully close to home for comfort. Evidently, two seventeen year olds had a confrontation that escalated before the first bell. Three other kids were hurt. One was life flighted to the hospital, but is expected to live and the other two were seen and released yesterday. It’s a scary world out there.

  16. Good morning everyone! I am actually looking forward to autumn….and winter…we don’t get the amazing leaf changes like back east, but, we do get the golden aspens and the smell is so sweet it just makes one smile…..the winter snows are breathtaking, and if you don’t have to drive anywhere it can be quite enjoyable! I don’t mind driving on snow….but the ice is a different sort of animal….
    Ann I read about the stabbing in your neck of the woods yesterday…so sad and scary. But, I have to tell you, when I was in high school…and that was over 40 years ago….we had stabbings, fights, civil rights riots (we even had the riot squad lined up in our hallways…helmets on with billy clubs at the ready)….we didn’t have the mass assaults as we hear of today though….prayers for you and your husband in the knowing of which direction the Lord would have you take….
    Donna, I remember when we brought Fly home…she ran up to Babe and “regarded” her….Babe, nose to nose with her, let out a bark and Fly fell right on her back with all four paws straight up in the air…it was as though Babe’s very breath caused her to fall backwards….I miss those puppy days….never ending laughter at their antics!

  17. So Cal has it’s seasons, but not much to get ready for. With double pane windows and good insulation we don’t have A/C and never run our furnace. When the mercury drops into the the 50s, a fire in the fireplace is all we need. We just got a cord. But we need that for beach and bon fires as much as heating our home.

    For those of us right on the coast our fall means no more marine layer, so more sunshine, finally summer temps and the occasional Santa Ana wind. Our evenings get cooler though, especially during the Santa Anas. Oh and we are in red tide right now, which makes the waves glow in the dark at night. Nothing like surfing in a phosphorescent red tide. And my grandkids like to run and write in the wet sand and watch it glow. We also get to snorkel with the leopard sharks that come in to hatch their young. La Jolla Shores is packed with them.

    By Saturday night I will be in Kauai, I wonder what fall is like there?

  18. Adios, that sounds amazing (except the part about sharks)! We’re having a bout of very hot weather right now, hotter than most of the summer, about 88F daily. I’m enjoying it immensely, especially as I know what’s coming all too soon.

  19. Adios, I understand there is no word for “weather” in the Hiwaiian language. You might check that out.
    I don’t know that I would like that.
    Here in Hendersonville, we have lots of “halfbacks”. Not a derogatory term. Lots of pople from New England retire to Florida. But they find they miss the seasons. A former professor from Michigan said, “There never was a time when the bugs died.”

    Sounds like Kim may even get a postcard from Hawaii. Adios is very nice to go there just to pick up a postcard for Kim 🙂

    Chas, would you mind getting a picture of your pet rock and using that as your avatar for a day? We would love to see the best pet in the world! And since there is much talk about puppies lately, I am just wondering if a pet rock has babies, what are they called? That could be the question of the day.

    Karen, swimming with the leopard sharks is quite safe. They look like the real thing so you can get great pics, but they are bottom-feeders so can’t really bite.

    Chas, hmmm, I will check that out. What the Hawaiin language lacks for “weather’ i suppose the Inuit make up for with 50 words for types of snow.

    I am taking a computer course at Blue Ridge Comm. Coll this fall. Maybe they will tell me.

  27. Donna: I’m the opposite. I’d much rather deal with hot weather (and run from air-conditioned car to air-conditioned building) than months of snow. We have very mild winters here in Houston and I like it that way. My SIL lives in Chicago. I couldn’t handle the months and months of cold weather. It would be depressing to me. I dislike winter clothes and love the fact that I can wear shorts almost year ’round.

    We went to the beach.

    The water was probably that warm!

  40. Kim, your 1:23 raisea a question. She will soon get one from Hendersonville. In Nov. I will be going to Tn. via Cherokee, NC. Cherokee is an important Iindian reservation. The question is: is the objective to reach each state, or important characteristics of places?

    Good Afternoon one and all. I decided to try out the College Football “Just-for-Fun” Contest. Those of you new to this, here are the rules: Guess the winner of each of the games below. For a tie breaker, guess the winner and the score of the last one, which is Arizona @ UNLV. The overall winner of each week gets a virtual high-five from the rest of us. Your guess must be posted here before noon on Saturday. I’ll re-post this tomorrow (Friday- or maybe AJ could do it for me when he posts the thread, since I sometimes don’t get here until Friday afternoons). Use any method you want for picking- logical or not. If you ladies want to look up the uniforms of the various teams to see which one is the most fashionable, that’s fine by me. Or if you like the team colors (BTW- Arizona is Cardinal Red and Blue). I mostly chose games involving Top 25 teams that most likely will not be blowouts (though this early in the season those are hard to find), as well as teams from states I know of where people on this blog live (but Alabama isn’t playing this week, so Auburn represents that state this time around- hard to please both kbells and Kim 😉 ). Notice that South Carolina has three teams in the contest. I hope that doesn’t make anyone jealous. Anyway, here are the games this week.     For example, you’re from rural Missouri if:

  52. Since I was in the Air Force, I have measured a trip by time, not distance.
    I never knew how far it was from my house to work, but it took 27 minutes in normal traffic.
    I never kne how far it was from the USC camput to home in N. Charleston but it took 2hrs 10 minutes. And Holly Hill was 45 minutes out.

    I have never seen anyone attend a funeral in overalls. I used to say “overhauls”. We never wore them over anything, as the name implies.

  61. Poor UT. Are we really supposed to be that bad this year? Back in my day, we were pretty good…But, I don’t follow sports of any kind, especially not football. It was always a social thing for me, attending the games as a student. My Hubby likes college football and we occasionally go back to Austin for a game, since we were both students at UT (though at different times).

    Our entire weekend is going to be consumed by the L’s first horse show. We have things we have to do Friday night, Saturday afternoon and most of the day on Sunday. I’m not looking forward to the heat, but L. is excited enough for both of us! I guess this is payback for all the dance/ cheerleading/UIL competitions my parents took me to as a kid. Becca’s having a friend spend the night tomorrow. I really like this little girl–she and Becca play really well together. They’re not in the same class this year, but they live in the same section of the neighborhood as we do and spent quite a bit of time together this past summer.

  65. Thanks for the J.C. Bach, AJ. I had not heard of his Concerto for Viola & Piano. Great selection! Both the violist and pianist were quite accomplished. I majored on both of those instruments (and voice) in college, so it is always an inspiration to see good players, especially on viola, which is a difficult instrument to play, in my opinion. But such a rich sound than can be drawn from it! Thanks much for picking out that piece. You’ve broadened my knowledge of the repertoire now. 🙂

  74. Thanks, AJ. 🙂 And great avatar! I love seeing deer. Hubby and I saw a doe and her two fawns when we were taking a walk yesterday. There are also triplet fawns we’ve seen on our road a few times (I’ve only seen them once). One of the perks of living out in the country. 😉

    I go by time to places not distance. The one time I came here straight through, it took 50 hours and made me determined to never do that again. The layover in Hong Kong was from 6am until midnight.
