I see on the front page of the Times-News that a Hendersonville High football player got a scholarship to Brevard college.
Not complaining. I love that about small town papers.
I see also that a guy in Burgettstown, Pa. successfully broke out of a police holding cell. His escape was well along until he stopped in a bar to celebrate.
Kare, in 38 years in Virginia, I only had to remove snow from the roof once.
It’s a scary project, But fortunately, all I had to do was push, it went off easily.

🙂 I did get some very pretty stuff. And I’m having fun starting my annual Valentine’s cards for little girls. (I send them to girls in my church–which now includes my old church–and my nieces, and some honorary nieces too. The numbers add up. I’m probably up to around three dozen this year, though I haven’t counted. I say “little girls,” but basically I send them to any female in my circles who was younger than 18 when I started doing it about four years ago, and I haven’t “aged” anyone off the list.)
🙂 I made my first turkey for family earlier in the week. It seemed to turn out well. I love having turkey sandwiches every day–usually I don’t get anything close to enough turkey at Thanksgiving, since someone else always made the turkey and they generally don’t send home leftovers with me.
🙂 Tonight we’ll make turkey soup for us and for our church. I haven’t made it before, but my husband makes a chicken noodle soup from time to time (my own soup is chicken with rice), so I asked if he could make it with turkey instead. I froze some of the turkey, some of the stock, and two of the bones. I hope it still works for soup when you’ve frozen it?
I did have some trouble in the afternoon. I tried to log on twice and it just got the spinning thing. I closed it, clear my browsing history, and then it was fine. I think it was a WordPress issue because I had the same problem the day before on another WP blog I visit.

🙂 – Turkey soup works just fine with frozen bones. Next time freeze the whole carc ass and bake some wonderfully nutritious bone broth which can then be frozen for use later on.
Klasko, I froze bones, broth, and meat (separately). So I was more concerned about whether the frozen (cooked) meat would work for soup than the other parts. I only froze two big bones, with no gristle or anything attached, since my husband’s mother can’t handle poultry and the girls can’t handle chicken bones and I thought the less I ask the “generation in the middle” to handle bones, the better it will be. (This was the first turkey he’d ever carved, and he didn’t enjoy the process. I dealt with the leftovers myself.) I figured he could handle being told, “These two bones can go in the soup and they’ll add flavor, and then we will take them out” with no risk that any loose pieces might end up staying in. . . . But freezing the carcass wouldn’t have worked. (I have frozen a ham carcass for split pea soup–and the ham as well, for that matter–but he doesn’t like split pea soup, can’t even stand the smell, so that’s a part of my past.)

🙂 The Zamperini story ran at long last getting lots of online “hits” and compliments via the family & folks I interviewed, including the producer & author.
🙂 Making good progress on the Westminster dog show project that runs a week from this Sunday. Still need to find participants from a couple of our readership areas for the “vignettes” portion of the package, but it should easily all be ready to turn in by Thursday, my deadline. I’m having fun with the writing portion of it which I’ve already started. Still need to interview someone from the show, but they’re supposed to set that up for me on Monday.
🙂 A friend and I are going to a free pet “expo” today in the city across the harbor (Long Beach). You can bring your dogs but I figured a crowded indoor environment like that would just be too stressful for Cowboy (Tess would hate it) so I’m leaving him behind.
🙂 Finally (I hope) managed to fix an Apple ID problem that keeps cropping up on my phone. It took making an appointment with the whiz kids at the store, of course. 🙂
🙂 Weekend! I was invited to a couple Super Bowl parties tomorrow but don’t think I’m going. (A) I care nothing about the Super Bowl and (B) after a pretty intense work week I think I’ll just want to “chill” on Sunday afternoon. 🙂
Cheryl, How does he feel about navy bean soup? You know you can always make it for yourself and freeze it for yourself to eat later. Also you could make it for a church potluck. That’s when I make all the stuff only I like at home. I rarely leave a potluck with leftovers.

Weird day here, it’s really overcast (and it *looks* cold out), but it’s like 70 degrees. I wore a hooded sweatshirt to the dog park late in the day (dusk), left the jacket in the car.
🙂 Driving home, we passed by 2 huge cruise ships docked in the harbor, all lit up. Pretty. 🙂
Like many churches, the one I used to attend (that hubby, SIL, DIL, and grandkids still go to) have soup suppers on Wednesday nights during Lent. Because they have an elementary school there, the health department comes in for inspections from time to time. A few years ago they got wind of the soup suppers and issued a warning citation that they must stop. Only food that is prepared on the premisis can be served – nothing that is made at home and brought in. No more soup suppers and no more church pot-lucks. I understand the reasoning behind it but still think it’s ridiculous. The church I now attend. that is within a mile or so of that church. still has the traditional Lenten soup suppers and at my suggestion stopped advertising it on their outdoor sign to avoid calling attention to the fact that they were promoting such an outrageously illegal activity.
Don’t make promises you don’t keep, & then call me & my family “immature & irresponsible” or (my favorite) “filthy, demented rednecks”.
Also, don’t refuse to pay child-support, & then brag about how mature & responsible you are. And don’t brag about the smart phone you bought while still refusing to pay any child-support.
But go ahead & enjoy your belief that you are the mature & responsible one, & that you are “above” us in every way. (Yes, he really did say that.)

Babysitting adorable grandson for the day, while his mommy works some extra hours. His adorable cuteness & sweetness should cheer me up. 🙂
Yesterday while I babysat him, he was especially cute & sweet. Just when I think he can’t get any cuter…he gets cuter! ♥
Good for you, Karen, for your restraint. Those who know you all will know the truth, if not now, eventually. He will not ‘get it’ anyway.
I love to throw the whole turkey carcass in a large stock pot, along with all leftover skin and bones, that have been detached. It can usually easily be halved, if it doesn’t fit. Then I add an onion halved, celery stalks (this is a great place to use the leafy ones, whole peppercorns, whole carrots. Bring it to a boil and let it go for a few hours or until any meat on it comes easily off the bones. Everything but the broth and meat can be discarded. You can add salt, too, but you will add it when you use the broth for soup and sometimes it is already in your turkey. I put the broth in serving size containers with some meat in each and have the makings for soup for many meals. Noodles, rice, potatoes can be quickly added with whatever else you want.
If I can’t get to it right away, I will freeze the carcass etc. until I have time. The freezer is a friend to any kind of soup, since you can also freeze leftover vegies, etc. to add to any soup you make.
