  1. I think most people around here are shocked by the cold of the past couple of days. Yesterday we were 20 below normal. We didn’t get frost, so our plants still are beautiful. We had someone come out and destroy a ground hornets’ nest that is next to the house. It took them about two minutes, according to the bill, not that you pay by time it takes. Hopefully, they will really be gone.

  2. 47 degrees here and rainy. 56 is to be our high temp! Yay!!

We have had hornets swarming the hummingbird feeder. They finally left so our two lone hummingbirds can fatten up before heading south with the rest of the gang.

  3. I saw an article similar to the one Janice posted. It thrills my soul to read that younger people are attending church more than in the past. But I wonder if the studies didn’t go deep enough. Neither mentioned reasons I think older adults are attending less often than before:

    • Health – How many of the elders generation are in nursing facilities and/or can’t get out as often?
    • How many Boomers and older people don’t like the trend toward “praise bands” leading the worship, using choruses that have little depth to the lyrics, repeating the same lines over and over again? Or the loud drums that usually accompany the praise band? I like hymns, and there are groups like the Gettys and Indelible Grace Music that are producing wonderful modern versions of old hymns and writing new ones with as much meat as a Charles Wesley or Isaac Watts hymn.
    • How many are tired of the “feel good” seeker-friendly sermons instead of the challenging messages of old?

Perhaps the authors of these articles and polls need to address these issues before saying us old folks aren’t as spiritual as the younger ones.

  4. I agree, Peter. I just mentioned that to my husband. Many of the nursing homes will have services for those who can get out of their rooms. If weather is bad, we will stay home and watch online. That was not an option not too long ago. Nor did it bother us so much to go out in iffy weather. It all depends on who was surveyed and how the questions were asked.

Another issue is how the ministry of the particular church works. I do know seniors who have left churches because they are pretty much ignored. I once enquired about a new church and was told it was mainly for young people. Some people go when their children are young and leave when they leave the nest.

Nevertheless, I am glad of this trend and pray it continues. I pray, too, it is not just about entertainment.

  5. I am currently in a church that has a pastor for the seniors, and my former church had that, too. Excellent pastors in both for the older folks. My friend, however, joined a very large church that does not have a pastor dedicated to the seniors although there are many seniors and they give the lion’s share of financial support. My friend recently voiced concern about that. It is a wealthy church so it seems odd to me, but I think they want to emphasize that younger people are the ones who will have to carry it all forward.

  6. so this morning after my walk I watched a video with my friends. It was Truth Rising by Focus on the Family. Absolutely excellent. Os Guinness was the main speaker and he told his story and then interviewed others. I believe that this was an introduction to a new series

something all of us need to see

  7. Jo I saw that announcement on Jim Daly’s FB page. I’m looking forward to watching it!

It is interesting and at times sad reading younger ones are attending church more than elders. I belong to a local FB page of Moms in the area. When the younger Moms inquire about where to attend church their must have lists include

    great childcare

    upbeat contemporary music

    coffee bar

    all “inclusive”.. no judgement
