Good morning everyone. Amos decided we should get up. I am reading a book. A Letter From Point Clear. I am only 42 pages in The writing is beautiful. The plot? We shall see. I’m meeting the stereotypes who are supposed to become enlightened.
How can you not like an author who writes a sentence: When Willia and Richard returned from the marsh, they had each taken a turn in the outdoor shower, then put on dry shorts, lain down on separate beds on the sleeping porch, and fallen asleep.
Good morning. I got up at 5:45 to be able to be at Karen’s by 7:15 for her 8:00 appointment. Thankfully, I received her cancellation call. She is really strugglimg with her health. She probably needs to be back in the hospital.
I forgot to say that I really liked Cheryl’s flowers yesterday. And now, today we get some more of Roscuro’s world adventure photos. We are blessed.
I still need to watch the video about Beth Moore. It has been many years since I did one of her studies. We are doing an Ortberg study now about being open to starting up new ministries which is in line with what our new church is doing. All the pastor’s sermons are going line by line through the book of Acts.
People are at all different stages of their Christian walks. I do not think one type study will meet the needs of all. I am doing a daily Bible study with Kathy Howard who has a few Bible study books out. It is helpful to me at my stage. It might not be right for a new believer or for someone who is sixty and has been a Christian since childhood. I learn something from her approach each day. I am thankful to have her resources available.
Lovely photo. I am praying for Roscuros health daily. Let us know how you are doing. May God bless this time in the far north.
We had a marching band concert tonight. Have you ever been to an indoor marching band concert? And our meeting house is not that large.
Kim, that doesn’t do anything for me. I much prefer something like, ““It has become harder to tolerate the months after summer ends, the plodding regularity of my daily chores, the inevitable descent into darkness and cold.” (from “a piece of the world” by Christina Baker Kline)
I see Phos’ picture is up now.
When I was at Carolina, I worked part time at the SCHD testing lab. Some of the other guys who worked there drove over to Myrtle Beach so they could experience a hurricane.
I had experienced them in Charleston.
Hurricanes aren’t exciting. Just trouble.
Cheryl has never been anywhere close to that far north. Cheryl was born in Phoenix, didn’t like winter even there, and was too much of a wimp even to stay in Chicago after a dozen or so winters there. (Though she did move back to the Midwest when a good enough reason enticed her.)
Kim, that’s the difference between you and me. You see a sentence like that and think, There’s an author who knows her grammar. I see a sentence like that and think, Good, she had an editor who knows the difference between those words. 😉
Morning! Chas now that was funny! 😊….and I wager there is not a person in this world who could refuse to warm up TSWITW’s coffee!
I just may get to finish this book today…so many interruptions happening lately!
Well I only hope Willia and Richard wore mosquito repellant to the marsh.
I didn’t have nightmares, just an active series of very odd dreams. Fleeting images and plots woven around clocks, watches, driving with the seat too low so I couldn’t see (whee! zooming across several lanes of the freeway without being hit!), dogs, my cousin (who seemed to always be there along with assorted friends who kept changing), going to the movies, more crazy driving up the stairs of a beautiful historic white house (not THE white house), more dogs … just a very weird jumble of nonstop activity. I got up tired. Maybe it qualifies as a nightmare after all.
Today is the last day of work for me, then I get a much-needed 4-day weekend, the payoff for working a few Saturday’s this summer. It’s good timing as I’ve about had it with all the homeless chatter and drama. I’m doing another story on that today and then I can forget about it all for a while. Everyone can chatter on and I’ll happily miss hearing/seeing it all.
The painters are supposed to/maybe/we’ll see start painting today.
I went to bed very upset with a relative. I prayed about it, but was still filled with anxiety. My mind went to sleep with scripture. When I awoke (several times during the night) my mind was filled with a phrase in !Cor. 13. It was not the verses I went to sleep with on my mind. As the scripture returned each time I awoke, I gained more and more peace about the situation and my response. This is a real heartache, but God is so good and his word stands forever. The Holy Spirit really does bring about a renewal of the mind using scripture. Sometimes it comes with a ‘wrestling’ in the night. I am grateful, although the situation itself has not changed.
I was reading in the Psalms before going to sleep last night and that usually helps. Last night (or at least very early this morning when those dreams were running amok), I seemed to take off on my own again. 🙂 I do that.
I have a live Facebook interview at noon, CA time, with a woman discussing marketing and books. My life has felt so fractured the last two weeks, I spent most of yesterday trying to get organized for her meeting. I’m embarrassed, I should have done that much earlier but . . . .
My friends tell me not to apologize over and over again and just move forward. I’m trying.
The good news I woke up this morning and felt like a normal person, finally. We’ll see how long it lasts. 🙂
My husband spent yesterday with Stargazer. He has his dream job. He just doesn’t get paid. Not sure if that’s 🙂 or 😦
I understand the importance of interning, but after a point, you need to pay the people doing the work.
However, he is getting invaluable experience that will work well on a resume and doesn’t have to support a family. His savings are sufficient for the moment because he’s frugal.
I’d just like to see him a little better settled. Mom heart.
One of my recurring dreams (not sure how far back this extends–ten years? maybe more?) is not being too low to see over the steering wheel, but driving a cherry-picker sort of vehicle, or at least something that has the driver’s seat WAY off the ground, down the highway. In the dream I’m always aware that I am so high up I can barely see the cars and just might hit one, and I’m conscious that if there is a pedestrian, I for sure will not see him or her and might run over the person. I’m aware that what I am doing is very dangerous and foolish; I don’t know whether I feel like for some reason I have to drive it, or it never occurs to me that I can stop, but I’m just up there fretting away and hoping I don’t damage property or kill anyone. (Far as I know, I never have, but I might just not know.) I know on at least one occasion I drove the thing through a parking lot, and that time I was really a nervous wreck. At least in traffic it’s generally safe to assume we are all driving the same direction, and generally people aren’t strolling between the lanes. In a parking lot, all bets are off.
If you ever see me driving such a thing, please stay out of my way unless you’re in something big enough to stop me. But if you are able to stop me, please do.
I watched the video this a.m., Cheryl, as I was getting ready to leave for the office. As I said, it has been years since I did one of her studies. We used a workbook without any video, and it was on the Fruit of the Spirit. It was a good experience way back, but it seemed nothing like what was on the video. She does not speak to me on the video about how I undetstand Christianity. That being said, I felt the guys on the video are a bit too focused on her and they could be focused more on the truth of God’s word rather than making it an Us versus Her kind of thing. I understand they do not want people led astray which is good. But by focusing on a bad message too much, it seems like lost opportunity to spend time sharing from the word. But, thanks for the update on something I knew nothing about because we have not done her studies at my current church. We have done a Priscilla Shirer study. Do you have an opinion on her approach? She is the daughter of Tony Evans.
More recently I did a workbook study by Jennifer Kennedy Dean. I was in on her keynote and classes at a WMU conference. I learn from her, too. Several years ago I did her study about the power of the blood of Jesus (leading up to Easter). This was my own individual study, not with a group. Are you familiar with her?
Michelle, I loved “a piece of the world” (note, the title has no caps). Especially since I love Andrew Wyeth’s paintings. If you’re ever out this way again, check out the Brandywine River Museum – it’s awesome and you can tour the house in which he grew up with his (also famous) father and brother.
I just read a similar book called “The Marriage of Opposites” that you might enjoy.
I occasionally dream about driving at night and suddenly everything goes completely dark, no headlights, no street lamps, just darkness. Usually it’s on a winding road, too. Like Cheryl, I know it’s dangerous to keep going but for some reason I feel compelled to keep going. It’s terrifying.
Chas, congratulations on paying someone to do your hedge. My husband is having a difficult time with hiring others. Sometimes it just needs to be done, but after you have been the one doing for years, it can be difficult. One step at a time to do what you need to do. It is a challenging time of life. I can see that from where we are.
Although Nightingale does the yard-work, and enjoys doing it, I would love to be able to pay someone to do it sometimes when she is particularly busy, especially the snow-shoveling in winter. But I don’t think we can afford that. (I do some of the snow-shoveling myself, but my arms and back get tired quickly, and we have to lot to do.)
My psychology professor at S. Carolina said that everyone dreams every night.
Having, said that: I seldom recall a dream. Some would say “I don’t dream”. However, sometimes I lay there thinking things. I have no control over it, I just think things. I don’ envision them.
One of my more ultra-conservative Christian friends on Facebook is upset that his 2nd grade daughter was not taught anything about the 9/11 attacks yesterday in her school.
My thought is that maybe, rather than being too liberal to mention it (which is what he was implying), maybe the school feels that kind of information is not age-appropriate for 2nd graders.
I took a course on Martin Luther at Southwestern Seminary. I have never heard that he said any of those quotes, except #6. Luther, at his trial, said “Here I stand” or something similar at his trial. After that, some of his friends helped him escape and he spent a couple (maybe 5) of years hidden in Wartburg Castle. There, he translated the Bible from Latin to German, and wrote “A Mighty Fortress”..
That friend is someone we know in real life, too. He told me that Hubby saved his marriage by running his bread route for him for about a year several years ago. He knew that Hubby was running the route as if it were his own, and had no worries about it.
At Hubby’s memorial, he remarked to Nightingale that Hubby was a man that another man could trust with his business, his wife, and his bank account. 🙂
At SWBTS, I read “Here I Stand” and another biography of Luther written by a Catholic. Had to get two views. There was lots not to like about Luther.
Luther was a great man, but destiny was thrust on him. He didn’t seek notoriety. It just happens to some who take a stand.
Huss was killed a century (?) earlier for doing what Luther did.
But Luther had powerful friends.
In those days, Spain controlled most of Europe. But the local (forgot the name) really ran the show.
Roland Bainton wrote “Here I Stand”. I had forgotten that. I think it was made into a movie.. You have to understand that this was before 1962. . Before many of you were born.
My husband became fascinated with Hus when we were in Prague. We bought a book on Kindle about Hus and the Hussites and he enjoyed it for the rest of the trip.
I read Here I Stand for a college class. That was 40 years ago and I don’t remember it well at all. But I’m surprised to hear that Luther didn’t actually say that, since such a respected biography has that as its title.
This morning as we neared the office, but still on the main highway, Art saw two big D.O.T. dump type trucks hauling what he called dirty old mattresses. He wondered why and then realized they must be headed for the Atlanta Motor Speedway campground which is about twemty minutes south.
I know it is selfish to complain, but it is difficult to imagine how bad our traffic is going to be. It seemed a good bit worse already this a.m.
Part of my dream last night was that my cousin, who was in the passenger seat, had twisted the rear view mirror all the way around to her side. As it was, I could barely see above the steering wheel anyway.
Thinking about things is definitely different from dreaming! Dreaming is like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. You go where it takes you.
Just filed my final homeless story for the week and it sure feels good. Someone earlier on social media accused me of being a liberal and following my own liberal mindset in these stories. I was, he said, only a few steps shy of the communist weekly paper editor in town. Then he called on everyone to boycott our paper.
You know, it all kind of freed me from all the angst over covering this story. People simply will read into it what they will, there’s nothing, nothing I can do to change that.
The first photo is looking up the fjord towards the bay it opens onto. On the left, in the distance, is the hamlet. The tide is out, hence all the mud and rocks in the foreground. The second picture is of the autumn colours in the plants on the lower slopes of one of the mountains that overlook the community.
Jo, my asthma continues to be cranky, but I am able to function. I have been going around making home visits with one of the nurses. It is only 8 hour shifts (as opposed to 12), but I am very tired by the end of the day. The air pressure is low here, so it is a bit like going to a higher altitude and I think that is part of the reason for the tiredness.
Michelle, I am not doing anything special. I’m just a student here, learning from those with much more experience and knowledge. But it isn’t barren, as the second picture shows. The Inuit have been going out to dig clams and pick blueberries lately. There is a fishery for Artic char. One of the nurses spotted orcas chasing a bowhead whale yesterday morning in the fjord. The hamlet name is after the caribou herds that used to migrate through. The caribou have changed their migration pattern, so the hunters must go further afield for them, but some of the Inuit hunters have recently returned with caribou meat. There are ravens and waterfowl. Closer to the bay, there are seals and walrus (polar bears almost never come up the fjord, thankfully). It is just that Baffin Island is above the tree line, so there are no trees. All around the world, the northern taiga forests cease at a certain point and the tundra begins, just as going up a mountain anywhere in the world, one leaves the trees behind and only small ground plants grow. Increases in latitude and increases in altitude have roughly the same effect.
We do not directly pay someone to care for “our” yard (nor is it officially our yard, but common space), but being in a condo means we pay indirectly as part of our dues . . . and my husband could not be happier to be relieved from yard duty!
Okay, I am just back from doing the chores, changing the deal on the game camera, and playing catch with eleven year old. Now to step up to fifty seven!
Well, as to you letting go. That is where I am with seventeen year old son. Just let him do his thing and not worry about it at all. The trouble he could be in is out there and he is not in it. He is not going to learn to be part of a family in the next eleven months. So, he is living his life and I am living mine and both are fairly content. Husband has been on this train for a while.
Janice, 1:22, you said, “I felt the guys on the video are a bit too focused on her and they could be focused more on the truth of God’s word rather than making it an Us versus Her kind of thing.”
Is it either/or?
Let’s imagine that you find out your next-door neighbor has been twice tried for pedophilia, with both cases having good and strong evidence, but he has gotten off on technicalities and has not been found guilty. Do you tell your children only how nice the other neighbors are, or do you also warn them to keep their distance from this neighbor (even as you prepare to move)?
The apostle Paul warned strongly about wolves among the sheep–and by the way, he sometimes named names. Nowhere did he say ignore the wolves and let them have access to the sheep. When a person has only a local “ministry,” then it might be sufficient for warnings to be only local. But when a person is drawing in tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, or millions of followers (I personally have no idea what numbers her books draw, but do know that she is very well known), then it is necessary for someone to say, “Hold on–this teacher is a threat to the purity of the church.” We have a tendency in our day to want to be “nice” and only say “kind” things about other people. But sometimes truth demands a strong warning. That is not in conflict with love–it is, in fact, sometimes a part of love, just as it would be loving for you to do everything in your power to keep your children away from a dangerous neighbor.
You also ask about Priscilla Evans Shirer. I know who she is, but have not read her and don’t have any opinions on her. Well, I have opinions, but no knowledgeable ones.
Mumsee, I only “know” one of the men on the video. The important part of the video is not necessarily what they say, but the video footage of Beth Moore herself. The second video is all Moore (Moore and Joyce Meyer), not the guys. The guys give context, but the embedded videos are really the significant part.
What I hear her saying is not necessarily what they are saying she said. Obviously there is much more they know about her, and I was curious how they stand.
I have heard of her but never really paid much attention but I did catch her name in a local paper, saying she would be speaking at one of the churches in Kamiah.
Mumsee, I went to hear Brannon Howse speak once eight or ten years ago, and three of my siblings attended an event where he spoke last year. So his name is familiar, but I don’t really “follow” him. He puts on what he calls Worldview Weekends (which is what three siblings and some nieces and nephews attended together last year) in which he tries to challenge Christians to see the world through biblical and not secular lenses. I can’t vouch for how sound he is or isn’t, and my husband’s take was that the other guy had a gentler demeanor; but my husband pretty much just skipped through to the videos of Moore.
Looks like a Cheryl picture to me.
Good morning anyhow.
Good evening Jo.

Of course I wrote a blog post about him.

I’m not talking to myself, but I can feel that my throat is better this morning. So the children may hear my voice on this last day of term 1.

Nice timing, Jo.
I read Here I Stand for a college class. That was 40 years ago and I don’t remember it well at all. But I’m surprised to hear that Luther didn’t actually say that, since such a respected biography has that as its title.

Kevin, if he didn’t say that, he said something similar.
His friends kidnaped hum immediately and saved him from Hul’s fate.

Interesting article about Hus. I knew, but had forgotten most of that.
There were things not to like about Luther. But he was a great man.

It is pouring rain at the office now.

Some people just wouldn’t know a fair news story if it whacked them across the face.
That’s just the way it is today. I need to accept it.

We do not directly pay someone to care for “our” yard (nor is it officially our yard, but common space), but being in a condo means we pay indirectly as part of our dues . . . and my husband could not be happier to be relieved from yard duty!

Oh, hi, DJ. Imagine, running into you here.
