  1. My sweet woman wanted us to get a security alarm system. I said that we have nothing a thief would want. When a thief saw our huge tube type television sets, he would run away. (Chuck and his kids have their TV sets hanging on the wall.)
    She wanted a security system.
Well, I agreed. We have an alarm system.

Problem is, it has a battery in case of power outage. This battery has gone dead and the set now emits a loud 5-beep warning every few minutes. The instructions say I can turn it off by punching the * on the control panel. That only quiets it for a few minutes. The battery needs to be replaced.
Problem is. It is a unique battery. I spent two hours last Tuesday running all over Hendersonville. (Yes, you can run all over Hendersonville in two hours. Thirty minutes if you don’t stop.) Radio Shack (still here), Staples, -they sent me to Home Depot. They sent me to the Tractor Supply. They said maybe a place in Asheville would have it.

I came home and ordered it from Amazon. Amazon had it for 5+ dollars. Shipping was 6+ dollars for a total of 11+ dollars. It has been shipped and will arrive someday before April 16.
Meanwhile, we have to keep our alarm on. (It doesn’t beep when the alarm is set. A moment’s thought would tell you why.) A real nuisance because if you open the door to go for the paper. It howls at about 150db. Until you run to shut it off.

I know some of you have real problems. But, as the saying goes:
”It isn’t the mountains ahead that wear you down so much as the grain of sand in your shoe.”

  2. 🙂 Chas has dogwoods
😦 I don’t. We have lost almost all of our dogwoods in this area due to some sort of blight that spread through here. We still have some English Dogwood, but not the trees like we used to have.

  3. Chas, new building codes require a smoke detector in every room. They are hardwired into the house with a battery backup, which all sounds good until ONE and only one battery dies at 2am. After the initial blast it quietens down to a chirp –in every room of the house. You may as well get up and make a pot of coffee at that point because there aren’t a whole lot of places to get a 9 volt battery at 3 in the morning.

You can probably guess how I know this

  4. 😦 My news earlier this week. BTW, my guess was correct – I got an email from the university explaining the reason for rejection was because a key transcript arrived after the deadline.

🙂 Youngest sibling is feeling better.

🙂 Finally got hold of the nursing regulatory body yesterday. They are sending the information on how to get my full license back.

🙂 😦 😀 :crying: 😆 :-/ Just after I contacted the regulating body, I checked my email. I found a message which might contain the answers I was looking for – or maybe not. I’m putting a request on the prayer thread.

  5. Been praying, roscuro, and will continue.

😦 Estate issues and those of working out things for my mom.

🙂 God does lift me up. I came out of my prayer time with a heavy heart only to hear my husband playing a new song my daughter had written and was singing (via email). It was so soothing and beautiful at just the right time. Later, we ran into friends who just went through many of the same things. They are believers, too, and were a blessing to me as we chatted in the middle of a store. Coincidence to some; God’s blessing and reminder to me.

  6. 🙂 Enjoying reading the blog again this morning

🙂 Great friends coming for the afternoon/evening to help on some fun projects and to visit

🙂 Toddler room tomorrow for me

  7. I don’t ever help in the toddler room. I used to. I used to teach or help teach Sunday School. Now I do nothing. I just sit in my pew, surrounded by short people. With my six foot plus sons behind me as backup. It works better for me.

  8. 😦 Feeling tired & in need of a “down” day — but …. I have to get ready for another trip into downtown LA to visit Carol today. I told her I’d try to get to her in the morning, and “morning” ends here in just two hours.

Her boyfriend (who is also not well & is disabled) was supposed to visit her today, which would have taken some of the pressure off of me to go — but he relies on his very unreliable uncle to drive him & it looks like they’ve canceled yet again (seriously, for the umpteenth time). So if I don’t go (and this is the only day I have until next Saturday again), she won’t have a visitor.

🙂 Looking forward to church tomorrow.

😦 Worried about Norma who (it seems to me) appears to be declining a bit in her mood & physically in the past few weeks (she’s just so frail and now is moving more slowly, a little unsteady on her feet). She finally gets in to see her oncologist on Monday, this will be the first visit since the diagnosis saying the sarcoma had returned following the November surgery. I hope there’s something they can do to at least slow down any advancement of the disease. But the surgeon suggested that he didn’t think she would be strong enough overall to tolerate chemo or any kind of radiation.

😦 I wish she could put on a little weight, she’s got no reserves. But I suspect it’s the disease that’s caused the weight loss.

🙂 Got to talking with a friend about a few of our local museums that neither of us have ever visited, so I’m looking forward to maybe doing that with her this spring or summer.

🙂 And the Dead Sea scrolls exhibit continues out here in LA until September, Carol is hoping to be well enough at some point to see that and I told her I’d take her.

  9. 🙂 Was able to be a grandmother this week without too much guilt of others things needed doing.

🙂 Yet another round with Poppy has inspired yet another round with Poppy. This has got to be the last one, but I’ve said that before . . .

🙂 😦 Caught up with real life just in time to fall into insomnia sink hole again. Nevertheless, the Lord got me up to go to the gym at 5:20, even though I’d still been awake at 1:30.

🙂 🙂 🙂 Oh, blessedness and thanks be to God, again. It’s looking like baby Jace does NOT have hemophilia. I don’t know why this has hit me so hard, but it has and I’m just grateful, grateful, grateful.

🙂 Rain in my neighborhood this week; good rain.

🙂 We’re going to the nursery and then will plant our garden this afternoon. The gray water from the washer provides most of what we need and I’m becoming quite adept with the bucket in the shower to water.

🙂 Thankful for enough years to see the way God works in the lives of young people with more balance than I did even ten years ago. Phos has got another interesting situation, my daughter is calming down into the wait and even my son seems to be okay and able to wait on God per the job situation. Son #2 seems to have survived the commuting (both sons 1 and 2 are commuting an hour each way to work), and is finding his way in the new job.

🙂 Paying no attention to the news helps with trying to remain calm in a decadent world. 🙂

I’m not certain, but I think Amazon is either a big warehouse with an office. Or an office with contacts and contracts with manufacturers at different places.
This is the only thing I have bought from Amazon beside books. I wouldn’t buy books from them if we had a bookstore here. But all the bookstores are gone. Now Radio Shack is going. Soon there will be no more malls.
Everybody will be buying everything from their desktop.
    Middle GD already does that

I called Radio Shack last Tuesday before I went over there. They said they had this battery. But when I got there, it wasn’t so. Hence my chasing all over town.
We don’t have a Best Buy in Hendersonville.

  11. Thanks, Phos! That is interesting. I wondered because I often get things directly from Amazon, though I don’t know if it is the same distribution site. But often I get things in strange little boxes, indicating they were coming from little stores in different places.

  12. There’s an Amazon “Marketplace” where 3rd party sellers can sell things through Amazon, those are probably the store-specific boxes you see.

There must be a distribution site near me because we can have same-day delivery on many items.

  13. I don’t like to go shopping.
But I dread the day when people can’t go shopping.
Some, Elvera, Becky, and others will miss it.
When I got my battery, I got a paper saying returning it would be easy if not satisfied.
But the shipping cost was more that the battery cost.

  14. 🙂 Got up to see Carol, took her for a ride through the downtown high rises and then took a detour over to Hollywood to drive by one of the assisted living places where she may wind up. It didn’t look bad, better than her last one for sure — and a better neighborhood (although it is almost next door to the giant Scientology Headquarters).

But I told her if she chose that place (she seems included to do that), she’d just have to realize that many of us who now visit & help her might not be able to be there as frequently.

Bumper to bumper freeway traffic coming home, though, it took me an hour …

  15. I also suggested she do some online checking to make sure there would be a Mo. Synod Lutheran church (her denomination) in the area — or at least some kind of grounded, biblical church close enough that she could commit to attending.

  16. Donna, did you see the documentary, “Going Clear”? The guy who did it just started out wanting to understand it as just another religion. What he found out…..

  17. No, haven’t seen it — Scientology has been a mainstay in our area for many years, they used to pass out flyers on Hollywood & Sunset Blvd. when I worked in Hollywood just out of college. My vet flirted with Scientology for a while, (I presume he’s backed away from it, I believe he attends a liberal Christian church and he does self-identify as a Christian now, but his “faith language” sounds mostly New Age to me).

As we drove past the headquarters yesterday I told Carol “Don’t go there” (she’s very intellectually curious about different churches and religions, but is pretty grounded in conservative Lutheran doctrine). Luckily, I think you have to have $$$ to walk in the door of Scientology and Carol doesn’t have any of that. 🙂

Actually, we are getting a free weekend of HBO right now, I wonder of “Going Clear” is on the schedule? I’ll have to check, I would like to see it.

  18. I’ve read some things about it in the past, but I’m sure I’d learn some things — looks like they don’t air it again on HBO until 4/15 and the free weekend, of course, ends tonight.

I’m surprised it wasn’t one of the programs they showcased.
