Good Morning!

The MLB playoffs start today. Sadly my Yankees are not playing. So for my prediction to win it all, which may or may not be the curse of death, see the header photo. 🙂

On this day in 1777 the Congress of the United States moved to York, PA, due to advancing British forces. 

In 1787 the Columbia left Boston and began the trip that would make it the first American vessel to sail around the world. 

In 1882, in Appleton, WI, the world’s first hydroelectric power plant began operating. 

In 1947 the World Series was televised for the first time. The sponsors only paid $65,000 for the entire series between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees. 

And in 1954 the U.S. Navy commissioned the Nautilus submarine at Groton, CT. It was the first atomic-powered vessel. The submarine had been launched on January 21, 1954.

  2. Aj mentioned the World Series being televised the first time in 1947. I heard on the radio that in 1951 the first football game was televised. Fordham beat someone, I forgot who.

  10. Good Morning. You don’t realize how bad you felt until you feel good. The doctor gave me a steroid shot yesterday. I could finally breathe!!!! I fell asleep at about 7:30, woke up around 10, fell back asleep and slept until 5:30! I feel like a new person.

    I have lots to get done today so I better get started.

  12. I am rewinding the tape I made yesterday from the interview so I can pull out what I need for my article.
    I interviewed her about prayer, and she had much to tell. It will be hard to narrow it down. I was going to do it in interview format, but I think I need to change that so my questions will not be included in the word count. More of her and less of me 🙂

  13. Wrong, AJ. It’s the year of the Royals, who gained entrance to play in October for the first time since 1985, when, if memory serves me right, beat the Yankees to win the AL title, then went on to beat the Cardinals in the only I-70 World Series. Since the Cards won their division, perhaps this will be another Missouri year.

  16. Amusing cartoon in one of our slick LA magazines this month indicating that journalists in Los Angeles tend to make less than full-time dog walkers in the city. But on the up side, we apparently make more (though not a lot more) than those movie street characters you see yukking it up with tourists on the sidewalk at Hollywood and Vine. 🙂

    This information has opened up all kinds of new second-career options.

  17. Listen, my friend G has a dog walker when he is out of town. They send him daily photos of Baby to let him know she is OK. They even cute it up by putting her photo inside a star and all sorts of other stuff. I think they walk her twice a day, maybe more. Think about it. You are outside walking a dog. How easy is that and they pay you to do it. I have to walk my own dog and no one pays me!

    I do know a dog walker/sitter, though, who fell on pretty hard times when a few of her well-paying, regular clients who traveled a lot moved.

  19. Donna- re: NCIS-LA – Is it as stereotypical as Kim says the N.O. version is? I mean, are there really cops in LA like Deeks? And do all the guy geeks act/dress like Eric? Hey- How many other shows have both Deeks and geeks?

I’ve certainly worked with guys like Deeks in journalism. 🙂 One of them (we always called him ‘shark’ because he got the job at the newspaper after selling us a freelance shark photo) cleaned up nicely. He now sports (very) short hair, wears high-end suits & moves in some high-powered circles at city hall.

    And guys in shorts are definitely a year-round staple here, although the Eric character looks much neater than most in the real world. 🙂

  22. Well, I am learning to be flexible in the article writing.
    🙂 😦 The only thing on the interview recording was at the very beginning where we determined the recorder was voice activated. None of the interview was there. All part of the learning process so it was good it was with a friend. I will see if we can talk again later today. It is not critical that I get it done today, but I have gotten all assignments in on time before this one so I wanted to be timely with this one, too. I still may make it.

  23. Bosley pulled on the roll of paper towels until she had a nice bed of them made for herself in the kitchen floor. That happened after hurting my back cleaning her litter box. She is a happy kitchen floor camper, but I am not feeling so happy at the moment.

  24. Oh Janice, so sorry about the recorder. That definitely happens — I still remember my first editor, after we’d met with a congressman (who had agreed to an interview with us in the middle of a scandal that ultimately forced him from office) and I had my tape recorder running while taking only minimal notes.

    Later, my editor says, “Well, I sure hope your tape recorder was working.” Panic!! I was a 20-something reporter with very little experience and I thought OH NO. Thankfully, it was all there, but it taught me to always take notes anyway …

    Last time I had an important sit-down interview with several port developers I used the iRecord app on my iPhone — it worked just fine, but I was taking notes also and every so often, I’d double check to make sure the red “Recording” symbol and time counter were still going on the phone.

    Recording usually just slows us down in the newspaper business, it’s a luxury — but also a good backup to have; and recording an important interview is especially wonderful if it’s something you’ll have a few days to work on. You get such nice, full quotes, better than you would if you were hand-scribbling it.

    And don’t get me started on “fast” talkers ….

    Best person I ever covered at a news conference was Sen. Susan Collins. She was out here for a port security conference several years ago and she …. talked …. nice …. and … s-l-o-w. 🙂

  25. My dogs make more of a paper mess than the cat ever does (she’s actually very good in that way).

    My patio this week was strewn with a gently-used paper towel they stole along with one of those little plastic cat food can sealer-tops you buy at Petco. The paper towel all torn up & the cap all tooth-marked, off course.

    Back to interviews — I’ve also lost notes I’ve taken on the computer during phone interviews — I always try to remember to keep saving! Computers do crash ….

  27. Question for anyone who wishes to answer:

    We would like to cut back on our children’s screen time (significantly — my husband and I agree we have allowed too much, and want it drastically reduced). Neither of us has strong opinions about how to bring it about, though, so I thought I’d ask all of you.

    A gradual reduction to desired levels? Or cold-turkey down to desired levels? (We’re not planning to eliminate screens entirely.)

  30. 6 Arrows: My mother limited our computer time by saying we could only play games on it (we had an Amiga) if we had finished all our school subjects for the day. That did not include the computer typing program, which was one of our subjects. We did not have television and movies were limited to one on Saturday afternoons after household chores were completed. Our father was the one who screened what movies we could watch.

    It worked quite well. Some weeks, we would play only computer games after school work was done. Other weeks, the computer didn’t have as much draw and we spent our free time playing board games, building toy towns, or playing outside. It all depended on what we felt like. We learned to manipulate technological devices, including excellent typing skills, and none of us have had trouble keeping up with the ever changing devices. We enjoy a good movie, but have little patience for the shallow or inane and we are all avid readers.

    I would suggest to start out that you have them do a complete fast for a couple of weeks. I know when I start feeling like I’m living in my computer, I stop completely for a couple of days – I usually enjoy being unplugged so much that I’m a little reluctant to go back. Also, for older children, involve them in deciding what they should do about their excessive screen time. We gradually gained more freedom to be on the computer as we liked (which was after we got Windows) and also in what movies we watched and when we watched them.

  31. 6 Arrows, I suggest, if possible, to take a fun trip somewhere with no screens available for a couple of days. Camping would be great. That should take the edge off of cold turkey. Maybe promise to have more family fun times to show the advantage of not wasting time on the computer or with tv. We would watch good movies or Teaching Company lectures for entertainment when son was home. We did not have a tv routine. Son never got hooked on many mindless computer games but did some lesrning games on there.

  32. Best thing about today so far was discovering I could put a folded fleece blanket behind my computer, on the desk/table where I write and Bosley is content to nap there while I work. She is right by the window there for when she wants to look for birds. This is a great advancement in our lives. I need to get her a cap and gown!

  38. Well, I just might have to stop reading YF’s Facebook posts after all. It’s not because her opinions are the opposite of mine on almost every subject that comes up. I can handle that. It’s her condescending, & morally-superior tone that is getting to me.

    A bit of background, so you’ll understand what it was about one little sentence that bothered me…

    YF has on more than one occasion prefaced a post of hers (or something she’s shared) with something along the lines of “No one can [disagree with my opinion on this] & still pretend to be a decent person.”

    Ever since the Hobby Lobby decision by the Supreme Court, she has shared some anti-Hobby Lobby articles. I have pointed out more than once that Hobby Lobby is actually very good to their employees. (From what I’ve read, they have a pretty high starting wage, & other nice perks. CEO & founder, David Green, has given multiple millions of dollars to charities.)

    So last night, YF shared another anti-Hobby Lobby article (about one store where a trangendered woman is not allowed to use the women’s bathroom). She prefaced it this way…

    ” ‘Hobby Lobby is very good to their employees!’ says no one who cares about human rights in good conscience.”

    I was kind of stunned by how blatant that was. And I am seriously considering not reading her stuff anymore. Still praying for God to get through to her, though.

  39. Roscuro, thanks, BTW, for your answer on yesterday’s thread about linking to World articles.

    Also, in your 6:05 tonight, you described something very similar to what I feel; namely, that I take breaks now and then from the computer, too, and usually find that refreshing, especially if I’ve been OD-ing on screen time before that. And sometimes I feel reluctant to go back, too, as it means I’m leaving behind some of the exhilaration that taking a break enabled.

    Thanks again, everyone who shared thoughts on screen time for the children. Changes will be coming tomorrow, and if you think to pray for our family as we go forward with what we decide, that would be greatly appreciated!

  41. Karen, YF sounds pretty insufferable. 😉 Hopefully she’ll grow/mature out of it. Even if she holds on to her current views, one would hope she’d become humble enough to understand she’s not personally the keeper of all truth.

    But liberals (more than conservatives in my experience & observation) tend to cling to that very black-and-white view of people and politics.
