Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks- Week 1

You asked for it (well, Chas did, at least), and here it is: The Weekly NCAA College Football Challenge. Or as it was dubbed last year: Peter’s Pack of Pickled Pigskin Picks. So, you know the rules. You pick the winner of nine D-1 gridiron contests, as well as the winner and score in the tiebreaker game, which will be the game involving Arizona each week, unless they have a bye. Or maybe this year we’ll do a rotating tie breaker, letting the weekly winners pick which game it will be. Yeah, something different this time.

So, without any further ado or reckless rambling, here are the games for Week 1 8/28 – 9/1. (Numbers are the ranking in the AP Top 25 poll.)

  1. #21 Texas A&M @ #9 South Carolina

  2. Boise State vs. #18 Ole Miss

  3. #5 Ohio State @ Navy

  4. West Virginia vs. #2 Alabama

  5. Arkansas @ #6 Auburn

  6. #16 Clemson @ #12 Georgia

  7. Idaho @ Florida

  8. #1 Florida State vs. Oklahoma State

  9. #14 Wisconsin vs. #13 LSU

       10. TB UNLV @ Arizona – Guess winner and score.

  1. Chas’s wild guesses: Jo, if Anonymous wins, all the money goes back into the pot. 😆
    Here goes:
    Gamecocks will beat them Aggies.
Ole Miss. Sorry about that Mumsee. If Boise wants to be a winner, they need to stay out of the SEC. 🙂
    Ohio State. Not fair, really.
    Bama
    Auburn.
Georgia. I agree with Spurrier who wishes they could tie. But I don’t want the Dawgs coming to Columbia in a couple of weeks mad.
    Florida
Oklahoma State. I know I’m losing this but my gut overrules my mind here.
    LSU
    Arizona 21-7

  2. Oh, I forgot to mention that since the first game is Thursday night, you must post your guesses by 5PM EDT Thursday.

And please include you name. No anonymous entries can win (although I think AJ can verify who you are).

  3. I know politics don’t belong on this page, but it’s relevant and serious.
I knew that when Obama started ignoring the constitution that nothing good was coming of it. People start making their own rules.

I see on the sports page that two games, Tenn/Utah and Baylor/SMU are going to be played on Sunday. Not only that, but Louisville plays Miami, Fl. on Monday.
Who knows what they’ll be up to next.
Somebody, somewhere in this country will call soccer “football”.

  4. So Michelle is the anonymous, even though she claimed she couldn’t be the one @ 7:43, since @ 10:11 she wrote “It’s easy, I only vote for UCLA, so that’s how you know it’s not me!” I know that one was hers because of the UCLA reference. Unless UCLA was Adios (who hasn’t been here in long time) and Michelle was USC.

  5. Here are my picks:
    1. SoCar – As I’ve often said: I don’t like Texas, so teams from that state must lose whenever they play. And when both teams are from Texas, they both must lose!
    2. BSU – As Mumsee says: Go Boise!
    3. OSU – While I’m not a big fan of the team named after a nut, Navy isn’t that good. Although I do hope I’m wrong on this one.
    4. Alabama – What else can I say?
    5. Auburn – See #4 above.
    6. Clemson – Tigers beat Dawgs. (The only Bulldog I like is the one at my alma mater – Northeast Missouri — now Truman — State Univ.)
    7. Fla – Reality. Idaho does’t win many games.
    8. FSU – Though Florida is right down there with Texas on my list of favorite states, reality says OSU can’t handle the Gators.
    9. LSU – Tigers again. I just don’t like Wisconsin. I think it comes from being married to an Iowan.
TB UA 28-10 – I wish Arizona would stop scheduling these also-ran teams in the early season. Yeah, they win them, but they need to get tougher competition in order to gain recognition.

  6. I just noticed when copying the predictions that Chas and Anonymous Michelle have the same score for the tie breaker. Since she came first, Michelle gets that score. Can you change yours, Chas?

  9. Just shaking you football folk up. My extended family is playing some sort of fantasy football and when I got the email, forwarded it on to my kids. One of my sons pointed out the family was looking for a variety of generations and sexes. I explained to him, “I only go to football games to watch the halftime show. So, unless there’s a fantasy half-time show . . . ”

Though I may go to the Raiders-Seahawks game on Thursday night. My children are all Seahawks fans and my daughter got four tickets on the 60 yard line for free. She’s driving up for LA to attend the game (and see us, ha!).

I don’t think I’ve been to a professional football game since 1976, when the UCLA band played in the LA Rams half time show at the Coliseum!

    And we left after halftime.

    🙂

  10. My youngest GD would go to the football games and leave after the halftime show.
The other two are fans, the middle one more so. She is a Gamecock fan. The oldest married a Gator.

~~And the WINNER is: Ricky Weaver and AJ each had 8 correct, but RW’s tie breaker guess of 41-10 was closer than AJ’s 28-14. I take the difference of the two teams and combine the results. Ricky was 17 off of Arizona and 3 off of UNLV, which is a diffenece of 20 points; while AJ was off 30 from Arizona and 1 off UNLV, for a difference of 31.

Other participants: with 7 correct Anonymous Michelle, Chas, and Inbutnotof junior.
    With 6: JaniceG and I (Peter L)
inbutnotof managed to get 4 correct and mumsee had 1.

So, Ricky Weaver, which game is the tie breaker for next week? Arizona plays on Thursday, but all the other games of interest to the WVers are Saturday. See the schedule click ESPN.

  15. CORRECTION: On futher review, the call on the filed is overturned, as the “moderator” of this thread mistakenly marked Ricky worng on one of the games. Ricky got 9 of 9, so no tie breaker was needed.

But he still needs to chose a tie breaker game if he wants to. Or the Thursday night Arizona @ Texas-San Antonia blow out will be the tie breaker.

  16. Oops! Not my day. I didn’t read the thread before that last post. Ricky- I marked your Ole Miss game wrong by mistake. And SMU-North Texas it is.
