Our Daily Thread 11-4-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1880 James and John Ritty patented the first cash register.

In 1924 Nellie T. Ross of Wyoming was elected America’s first woman governor so she could serve out the remaining term of her late husband, William B. Ross.

In 1939 at the 40th National Automobile Show the first air-conditioned car was put on display.

In 1965 Lee Ann Roberts Breedlove became the first woman to exceed 300 mph when she went 308.5 mph.

And in 1979 Iranian militants seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran and took 63 Americans hostage (90 total hostages).

“Everything is changing. People are taking their comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke.”

Today is Will Rogers’ birthday.

That’s some pretty fancy rope work. 🙂

It’s also Art Carney’s birthday.

And this guy was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame today in 1992.

  1. Good chilly Monday morning! We still have not turned on the heat so it is around 58 degrees in the house and in the 40’s outside. Will be in the 60’s later.

Do you get to keep your health insurance plan? We don’t. Anyone else here caught in the unwanted position of being proof positive that a President has lied to the citizens?

  2. It has been chilly here the past two mornings. Mr. P turned on the heat. For some reason I didn’t realize we had a gas furnace until the heat came on. That smell.
Things are starting to come together. The house is looking more like home. I am under a deadline. Our first guest will arrive the weekend before Thanksgiving and leave the Tuesday before. Then Middle Son has asked to come home for Christmas.
The neighbors are all very friendly. Yesterday I put Ornamental Kale and Pansies out in the front flower bed and I hung treat balls for the birds. One is made with peanut butter and the other with hone. I can see them from the family room sofa. I hope the birds find them soon so we can enjoy them.

  3. It is a rental with the potential to buy, It is a 1960’s 3/2 ranch with a 20×20 family room addition. it has been updated through the years. It is the home an acquaintance grew up in. She lives out of state and will never move back. Her mother is in a nursing home and likes to be taken out to drive by “her house” and make sure everything still looks nice. It sort of fell in my lap and is an excellent deal for us. She mainly wants someone who will do the maintenance and upkeep on it. She had it rented out before and I don’t think the guy vacuumed or cleaned a bathroom the entire time he was here. She sponsored the paint and other items and Mr. P and I provided the labor to fix it back up.

  4. We had over a foot of heavy wet snow yesterday. Made it to church on slick slushy roads. Coming home took us much longer as the snow was so much deeper. We stopped 3 times to push people who had gotten stuck on the roadway (not in the ditch). I’m thankful we have snow tires and that Tim put them on the Jeep Saturday night! If I hadn’t been scheduled for the toddler room, we probably would have turned around and just stayed home. We also had several episodes of power outages. I ordered our Christmas present to us yesterday – a gel fuel fireplace. Once it comes, we will at least have some warmth in part of our house when the power is out!

It’s beautiful and snowy outside, but my double flowering plums have been flattened by the heavy snow 😦

  5. My neighbors cat was yowling to be let in this morning while I warmed my wife’s car up at 6:30.

I told him to get lost, he had the wrong house, and if he didn’t want to be cold he shouldn’t stay out all night. Like Joe said, get over it cat, it’s not happening. 🙂

  6. Thanks to the time change, I was up nice and early (6:30, early for me). What a difference a sunrise makes. Got the rest of the bills paid online.

Kim, the house and what you’re doing with it sounds charming. Enjoy.

JaniceG, I have employer insurance but it has shaken that up a bit, the Kaiser plan in particular (which I’m not on) is now requiring deductibles to be paid — everyone on that plan is hustling to have tests done, etc., before the end of the year when they’ll have to pay sometimes a significant portion of the bill.

I’m trying to find a way to stay on my PPO — premium on that only went up $8 a month, way less than it’s been rising in the past couple years I’ll admit — but it’s an expensive plan overall. But I don’t want to lose my doctors of some 20+ years. 😦

So I may drop the ‘extra’ added portion of life insurance I pay for, at least for this year since I’m not planning to die 🙂 , so maybe that can help make up some of the difference. I just can’t afford to get sick, however. 😦

I sure wish there were a way to fix all of this.

I got to church last night for our talk/’class’ on miracles — got there a few minutes early so I sat down next to a new person and started chatting. I figured I just hadn’t met her yet (our church is stretched out enough that you can actually miss getting to talk to folks who sit on the other side from you).

But it turns out she goes to a neighboring church where our pastor sometimes guest preaches and saw something about the Sunday evening class on fb so decided to come by and check it out.

  7. My cat wants out in the worst way, but she’s still healing up from that bite wound.

Cats always want in or out, whichever side of the door they’re on is the wrong side. 😉

  9. Anybody watch 60 Minutes last night?
NancyJill, that is the question I want to ask you. They talked to several people in Northern California and in Colorado about seceding. What are your thoughts?
Michelle, Adios, and Donna? Thoughts on California?

  10. Donna, FWIW, Dave Ramsey would say that you don’t need anymore life insurance than is necessary to cover funeral expenses since no one is depending on you financially.

  11. That Will Rogers quote is very true of this time. Do you know how many people I know who take to Jon Stewart more seriously than most news networks..

  12. Kim I didn’t see 60 minutes last night. I believe it is 7 or 8 northeastern rural counties who started the movement to secede. We have definitely seen the political climate change over the past 27 years here…more liberalism governing our legislature…smoking pot has killed way too many cells in the brains of those who slam down the gavel! The issue before our state at the moment is Amendment 66….a new “education tax”….it would be the largest state tax increase in the history of our state, written into our constitution….unrestrained spending, pushed upon us by the most liberal element of our society….Bill Gates and Michael Bloomberg have backed the promoters (can you say NEA?) with huge financial contributions to get this passed…..ummm….they don’t live here…
I can totally understand the desire to secede from this state…but, I believe moving would be much easier! 🙂 Soon there will be no jobs and people will have to move!

Not sure if I can wait up that late every night. We’ll see

  16. Anonymous, it’s looks like it should be possessive, because it has an apostrophe. But his, hers, theirs, and its are possessive without apostrophes, and it’s means it is.

Actually, I see Kare had one of each. The first one needed to be it’s, but the second should have been its. 🙂
