Re the Hispanics labeled as “white,” I learned this a few years ago myself: Do you remember fifth-grade social studies when they showed what “races” human beings were, that there was no such category as Hispanic? That’s what is happening here. When they ask for “race,” “white” is the correct option for Mexicans and other Hispanics, but “ethnicity” would come up with a more precise labeling. Notice that the census bureau does a variation of the same thing: One of the options is “white, non-Hispanic” and I assume that “white, Hispanic” is another one.
