On this day in 1800 The Library of Congress was established with a $5,000 allocation.

In 1877 federal troops were ordered out of New Orleans. This was the end to the North’s post-Civil War rule in the South.

In 1953 Winston Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

And in 1990 the space shuttle Discovery blasted off from Cape Canaveral, FL. carrying the $1.5 billion Hubble Space Telescope.

On this day in 1789 President George Washington moved into Franklin House, New York. It was the first executive mansion.

In 1900 the word “hillbilly” was first used in print in an article in the “New York Journal.” It was spelled “Hill-Billie”.

In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt signed an act creating the U.S. Army Reserve.

In 1964 Ken Johnson (Houston Astros) threw the first no-hitter for a loss. The game was lost 1-0 to the Cincinnati Reds due to two errors.

And in 2005 the first video was uploaded to YouTube.com.

In 1889, at noon, the Oklahoma land rush officially started as thousands of Americans raced for new, unclaimed land.

In 1952 an atomic test conducted in Nevada was the first nuclear explosion shown on live network television.

In 1954 the U.S. Senate’s McCarthy hearings began on television.

And in 993 the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum was dedicated in Washington, DC.

In 1865 President Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train left Washington.

In 1918 German fighter ace Manfred von Richthofen, “The Red Baron,” was shot down and killed during World War I.

And in 1972 Apollo 16 astronauts John Young and Charles Duke explored the surface of the moon.

In 1841, in Philadelphia, PA, Edgar Allen Poe’s first detective story, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” was published in Graham’s Magazine.

In 1902 Scientists Marie and Pierre Curie isolated the radioactive element radium.

And in 1971 the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the use of busing to achieve racial desegregation in schools.

On this day in 1521 Martin Luther confronted the emperor Charles V in the Diet of Worms and refused to retract his views that led to his excommunication.  

In 1775 American revolutionaries Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Samuel Prescott rode though the towns of Massachusetts giving the warning that the Regulars were coming.

In 1847 U.S. troops defeated almost 17,000 Mexican soldiers commanded by Santa Anna at Cerro Gordo.

And in 1923 the original Yankee Stadium opened in the Bronx, NY. The Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1. John Phillip Sousa’s band played the National Anthem.

 On this day in 1796 Benjamin Carr’s “The Archers” was performed in NYC. It was the first opera written by an American composer. I couldn’t find that, but I did find something else of his you’ll recognize.

In 1875 the game “snooker” was invented by Sir Neville Chamberlain.  

In 1964 the FBI lab reported that it could not determine the lyrics to “Louie Louie.” 

And in 1969, in Los Angeles, Sirhan Sirhan was convicted of assassinating U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

Today is Jan Hammer’s birthday. Sadly, his most well known piece of work is the Miami Vice theme. 🙂 Since that doesn’t do justice to his talent, here’s something more fitting.

On this day in 1705 Queen Anne of England knighted Isaac Newton.  

In 1818 the U.S. Senate ratified Rush-Bagot amendment which formed an unarmed U.S.-Canada border. 

In 1854 San Salvador was destroyed by an earthquake.  

In 1947, in Texas City, TX, the French ship Grandcamp, carrying ammonium nitrate fertilizer, caught fire and blew up. The explosions and resulting fires killed 576 people. 

And in 1982 Queen Elizabeth proclaimed Canada’s new constitution in effect. The act severed the last colonial links with Britain.

In 1912 the ocean liner Titanic sank in the North Atlantic after hitting an iceberg the evening before.

And in 1945, during World War II, British and Canadian troops liberated the Nazi concentration camp Bergen-Belsen.

In 1865 President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Ford’s Theater by John Wilkes Booth.

In 1912 the Atlantic passenger liner Titanic, on its maiden voyage hit an iceberg and began to sink. 1,517 people lost their lives.

And in 1981 America’s first space shuttle, Columbia, returned to Earth after a three-day test flight.
