In a more modern version of the metaphor, Wag the Dog means to use the military as a diversion from domestic scandals. This version of the metaphor comes from the movie. In this version, attacking Iran is the diversion from the Epstein files.

Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan also had horrible human rights records but I think we would now agree that all three interventions by the US or the West in general had serious errors and mistakes, if not the entire war was an error.
