In 1865 President Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train left Washington.

In 1918 German fighter ace Manfred von Richthofen, “The Red Baron,” was shot down and killed during World War I.

And in 1972 Apollo 16 astronauts John Young and Charles Duke explored the surface of the moon.

In 1841, in Philadelphia, PA, Edgar Allen Poe’s first detective story, “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” was published in Graham’s Magazine.

In 1902 Scientists Marie and Pierre Curie isolated the radioactive element radium.

And in 1971 the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the use of busing to achieve racial desegregation in schools.

On this day in 1521 Martin Luther confronted the emperor Charles V in the Diet of Worms and refused to retract his views that led to his excommunication.  

In 1775 American revolutionaries Paul Revere, William Dawes, and Samuel Prescott rode though the towns of Massachusetts giving the warning that the Regulars were coming.

In 1847 U.S. troops defeated almost 17,000 Mexican soldiers commanded by Santa Anna at Cerro Gordo.

And in 1923 the original Yankee Stadium opened in the Bronx, NY. The Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox 4-1. John Phillip Sousa’s band played the National Anthem.

In 1964 the FBI lab reported that it could not determine the lyrics to “Louie Louie.” 

And in 1969, in Los Angeles, Sirhan Sirhan was convicted of assassinating U.S. Senator Robert F. Kennedy.

On this day in 1705 Queen Anne of England knighted Isaac Newton.  

In 1818 the U.S. Senate ratified Rush-Bagot amendment which formed an unarmed U.S.-Canada border. 

In 1854 San Salvador was destroyed by an earthquake.  

In 1947, in Texas City, TX, the French ship Grandcamp, carrying ammonium nitrate fertilizer, caught fire and blew up. The explosions and resulting fires killed 576 people. 

And in 1982 Queen Elizabeth proclaimed Canada’s new constitution in effect. The act severed the last colonial links with Britain.

And in 1945, during World War II, British and Canadian troops liberated the Nazi concentration camp Bergen-Belsen.

And in 1981 America’s first space shuttle, Columbia, returned to Earth after a three-day test flight.

In 1898 President William McKinley asked Congress for a declaration of war with Spain.

In 1899 the treaty ending the Spanish-American War was declared in effect. 

In 1945 American soldiers liberated the Nazi concentration camp of Buchenwald in Germany.

And in 1947 Jackie Robinson became the first black player in major-league history. He played in an exhibition game for the Brooklyn Dodgers.
