On this day in 1797 a mutiny in the British navy spread from Spithead to the rest of the fleet.

In 1865 President Andrew Johnson offered $100,000 reward for the capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

In 1890 the Oklahoma Territory was organized.

In 1946 prisoners revolted at California’s Alcatraz prison.

And in 1970 student anti-war protesters at Ohio’s Kent State University burned down the campus ROTC building. The National Guard then took control of the campus.

In 1707 England, Wales and Scotland were united to form Great Britain.

In 1931 The Empire State Building in New York was dedicated and opened. It was 102 stories tall and was the tallest building in the world at the time.

And in 1961 Fidel Castro announced there would be no more elections in Cuba.

In 1862 New Orleans fell to Union forces during the Civil War.

And in 1945 the German Army in Italy surrendered unconditionally to the Allies.

On this day in 1789 a mutiny on the British ship Bounty took place when a rebel crew took the ship and set sail to Pitcairn Island. The mutineers left Captain W. Bligh and 18 sailors adrift.

In 1818 President James Monroe proclaimed naval disarmament on the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain.

In 1914 W.H. Carrier patented the design of his air conditioner.

In 1945 Benito Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci were executed by Italian partisans as they attempted to flee the country.

And in 1985 the largest sand castle in the world was completed near St. Petersburg, FL. It was four stories tall.

In 1877 federal troops were ordered out of New Orleans. This was the end to the North’s post-Civil War rule in the South.

In 1953 Winston Churchill was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.

And in 1990 the space shuttle Discovery blasted off from Cape Canaveral, FL. carrying the $1.5 billion Hubble Space Telescope.

In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt signed an act creating the U.S. Army Reserve.

In 1964 Ken Johnson (Houston Astros) threw the first no-hitter for a loss. The game was lost 1-0 to the Cincinnati Reds due to two errors.

And in 2005 the first video was uploaded to YouTube.com.
