Good morning, all. A beautiful day in the neighborhood. After exercise and chores, I expect to take the two outdoors for a couple hours of yard and garden work and then back in for school as the day heats up. Not expecting exceptionally high temps today, mid eighties though.
so the rebounder is the one thing that i sold in Ukarumpa. My friend spent just ten minutes a day on it, but she was doing jumping jacks and running. I will wait to see if I want to get one. Mine was a bellicon.
Um, we all may be wise to use a spotter with one of those. Looks like a painful misstep waiting to happen. Just since we’re not 10 or 20 or even 40 anymore … 🙂 Stuff happens and then it’s “What was I thinking?”
Friday at last, I hope today will be somewhat easy as I just need to add to and tweak a story I’d done yesterday (but hadn’t reached all the people I needed to).
OK, sorry, but I’m just thinking how hyper-careful the guys in PT would be if they used something like that (they don’t) with someone (probably of any age, but especially past 50 as our balance really isn’t what it used to be, it’s just a physical fact). They’d be all around that thing in a tight and stressed-out circle making sure things didn’t go from bad to worse with a little jump here, a little jump there … Whee. Nope. 🙂
Oh have mercy there was not one old person on those in the advertisements…..there must be a reason eh? I would love for Chas to be here and give his assessment…..hold onto that rail!! 🙃

And then you still would need to be really careful. I’ve seen the thick mats and/or balance boards with ski poles advertised for balance work — but again, firm hand grips at all times available — and advised!
In college the instructors were adamant about always-always-always having spotters when we, young folk back then, were on the (big) trampolines. It was like a PE law.
Rebounder. I got mine about fifteen years ago but did not find time to use it because i had know idea how to do so. I also thought it would be great for my autistic set and they did use it a bit but were busy outside learning things like balance by climbing trees.
But I decided to try again and started with about five minutes of hopping while holding on to the back of the couch. Dropped the need to hold on pretty quickly. It does wonders for the sense of balance. In my view, it builds new synapses in the brain that restore or even develop the ability to balance. And, because it strengthens the whole body, it gives a much more capable ability to catch oneself if one does begin to fall in the daily activities.
It is supposed to accelerate all the cells in the body with the continual change of gravity (from zero at the top of the bounce to two or three times at the bottom of the bounce. And in so doing, acts as a pump for the lymphatic system.
That all may be well and good or even true but I know that bouncing on it, doing squats on it or jumping jacks or whatever (no flips for me) makes me smile. It is not difficult but it energizes me during the day. So much so, that I sometimes go up for a noon repeat and almost always for a late afternoon jump about. “They”, whoever they may be, recommend ten minutes per day. I do fifteen in the morning, maybe ten at noon, and fifteen again at three. Blood pressure is doing great. Losing some weight and generally more energetic, less stiifness, more positive outlook.
Good afternoon. I spent time outside with Papa and Little Miss. He edged the yard and Little Miss entertained me while I pulled weeds. That sly old Papa then set up her splash pad do she could run around and slide into the water. He looked at me and smiled four and a quarter and still taking two hour naps. She finally asked to come inside. She changed and crawled in the bed with her pillow.
WHY didn’t I know these things when BG gave up naps at 18 months?????
I am a little better today. I am anxious because all the real estate people are talking about a “Shift” and it will last about 18 months and to cut expenses, double up, and ride it out. I am an expense to my office. I don’t want to be slashed. You’ve all been with me long enough and been through enough to understand why I have anxiety around this.
Oh, Kim, that is anxiety provoking. I just talked with my friend yesterday who is trying to decide on timing of buying their long awaited home. It’s got to be before interest rates go up, but after Atlanta housing rates stop rising if that is possible. So maybe they will have a one day notice to buy? She said some advise waiting another year. It is crazy.
And that rebounder sounds neat, Mumsee, the way you described it. But I have to be super careful. My appointment this morning was for a bone density test. I was already at a bad level a number of years ago. Not sure if my extra vitamin D taken for pandemic days could have helped that. I should know in a week or so.
One little thing to do daily to help with balance is to alternate standing on one leg as you brush your teeth. I did that for awhile. I think I read that in the AARP magazine. My doctor was happy several years back when I told her I was doing that. Now to get back to that good habit.
At the medical appointment I met a lady who came in with a walking stick. I commented that I liked it and had thought of getting some for hiking. She said she prefers the treking stick to a cane because a cane makes a person bend over. The stick keeps her back straight. It also makes her look younger than if she uses a cane. A very thoughtful lady! She told me about the different tips for a variety of terrain. She also said it’s Prime Day and they are on sale. So I have been shopping Amazon Smile. I found the #1 treking poles for 19.99, FYI.
Wes and I have just this week been discussing these👩🦯. Is that emoji a lady with a walking stick or a blind person? I can’t rightly make out the difference. Maybe that’s a golf club? Well, pretend it is a walking stick if it’s not!
The lady I met had taken her 2nd retirement from driving a school bus. She wanted a tiny home so she has bought a flat front school bus to convert to a tiny home. She also met a guy who bought her brother’s sailboat and they became fast friends. He bought a bus, too, to convert. She showed me a photo of both, her ‘twins’ that they a fixing up on a property which has too much bamboo. I took in a lot of info as she was quite a talker, and I am a good listener. She must have been there for something similar as I had there at the women’s imaging center recently so it was good she had me for company with her for a pleasant distraction.
The gentle impact of the rebounder is supposed to build bone density. It is an impact activity but does not cause the injuries of running or jumping on a hard surface. And no, I am not getting paid by the rebounder folk.
The tall walking sticks are great, I have a couple and they came in hand when the knee really went (literally) sideways! PT approves. 🙂 And standing on one leg is good, too, I do that as well.
My cousin, a tiny thing who’s very youthful and an avid walker but a few years older than I am, is using her gold-plated health insurance to go to PT several times a week, no cutoff for her, to work on her balance. She said she’d always had really good balance but noticed late it’s not so good, so she’s doing PT for that right now.
I got 15% off the stationary bike I’d been eyeing on Amazon for a couple months during Prime Days. It arrives Saturday, hoping to find a spot, for now — until I can get it assembled and in the house somewhere — in the garage.

I have a friend who was injured when someone in PT made her get on a rebounder. It was someone subbing for her regular therapist, and she argued about it, but finally agreed to try. It was not a good thing.
We will be off soon to an assisted living place where my husband’s group is playing for a staff appreciation evening. There is a car show, food and music.
Gruesome thought. Actually, the school bus lady had chopped bamboo and a stalk flew into her face and busted her lip which required stitches. People never know what accidents will happen!
People who get out of bed are prone to accidents!
One caution with a rebounder: don’t use it under a ceiling fan or low ceiling. I am not speaking from experience, though I’ve seen a few of those accidents on funniest video shows.
I looked up rebounding and the elderly. Lots of stuff but this looked helpful if you ignore the part where they say stand with your feet six feet apart when they meant inches.

I used one of those in PT a number of years ago, but not to jump on. It was tilted at an angle, and my job was to bounce a weighty ball off of it.

This is true, or as I often have told my children, you never know when a comet may land on your head.
However, if you just go slow and easy on the rebounder, you should be fine.

My granddaughters loved using one of these in the house. It helped them with all their energy when stuck in the house because of weather.

I didn’t have a bar, but just put mine next to something to hold onto. Even just walking on one is an experience. And then sorta marching.

the difference is that a rebounder uses bungy cords instead of metal coils so it is a much softer feel
