Morning! Another warm day but thankful the winds have calmed for once. Difficult night for the firefighters battling the fire to the south of us. We may see a smattering of rain on Sunday but nothing to write home about. This nation seems to be embroiled in an oppressive heat wave. But God…in Him we do trust.
No plans but to stay home and avoid heat and crowds.
We may take in a small local quilt show later. We also need to grocery shop. I hate to do that on a Friday, although shopping patterns can be different when it is a holiday weekend. One of the blessings of retirement is being able to do some things when all the rest are working or at school.
There are lots of parades around the area. Some are calithumpian and others are whole parades. We usually take in one or another, but don’t plan on it so far this year.

I was 19 for the Bicentennial. Got to sing in a city-wide choir the “If My People” cantata by Jimmie Owens. The 2nd Chapter of Acts (Annie Herring, Nellie and Matthew Ward) were in it as well as others in a traveling choir.

The heat wave is past here. We had low 90s early this week, though the heat index was over 100 one of those days. Interestingly, my son who lives three hours north of us had a higher temp/heat index: his feel-like temp on Monday was 115!
Here’s the title song to the cantata, based on 2 Chronicles 7:14 – if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
We are at 75° with rain at the moment. It has been very hot, but clouds and rain make it feel much better.
We are at the hospital and in a most stressful situation of expecting discharge with no clue as to destination. A long holiday weekend has shot all opportunity to find a place and make arrangements. Simply, a God-sized impossibility for Him to make an unexpected way forward where there is nothing. We have not received the help we got in the past at this hospital.
Really thankful to see 6 Arrows on here. Are you all finished with homeschool, and how is the piano teaching going?
Hi Janice! Homeschooling and piano teaching are winding down to the finish line. Sixth Arrow has about one month of her studies left, then she will graduate and our 28-year family homeschool journey will be over. We started in 1998 when First and Second Arrows were going into third grade and kindergarten, respectively.
I am also retiring from piano teaching at the end of summer, after 40 years of teaching. I am choosing to hang up my dual-teaching hat at the same time and move on to other adventures in life. It’s been a good run, but I’m ready for something different, and have already started exploring new challenges for my brain, to keep it young(-ish) and fresh. 🙂
I also remember the Bicentennial. I remember being a little upset at seeing a movie at the church we attended that bragged about the US but said nothing about it being God’s blessing that made it possible. Most was about how great we are. I guess that hasn’t changed.
We did go to the quilt show. We usually try to get to this, which is every year before the fourth. They always have Quilts of Valor and urge veterans to sign up for a drawing for them. My husband did so and won one! It is beautiful. I almost didn’t answer the phone because we didn’t recognize the number. We were almost home after stopping to get the groceries. We stashed them at home and drove back the 35 miles or so to pick up the quilt. These are beautiful quilts. Being a quilter myself, I know the cost in both time and materials is substantial.
Jo, it was such a blessing when you contacted me about meeting up during your travels through the area. I think of you often when I walk the paths or sit by the river in the park where we met up. Fond memories, those. 🙂

Happy US Independence Day tomorrow! 250! I remember being a 13-year-old in the Bicentennial celebration. How times have changed in various ways.
