  1. Re:

~ “Yes, let’s reward criminal behavior because they didn’t commit more.

    How about no…” ~

People who have exhibited “criminal behavior” are given leniency all the time, depending on their history or circumstances. Often, they receive leniency in the form of probation, suspended sentences, dropped charges, etc.

  2. Re: the information on the financial resources that Canada demands that immigrants have.

If the U.S. had those financial requirements, how many of our own families would not have been able to afford to immigrate? I doubt mine, on either side of my family, would have! Nor would most of the Irish (as an example) who came over during the potato famine in the 1800s.

  3. But those were probably citizens Kizzie. The criminals Aj refers to are those who started out life in our country as a person knowingly breaking our laws as their first move here. Why should they be given special dispensation?

  4. I also have been looking at lists. Most countries have expectations for or of their illegal immigrants. Everything from caning to a year in jail to deportation to fines to volunteer community service and often a combination of several. Nobody seems willing to just let folks walk in and settle down with no ramifications.

our task is to figure out out how to work with them humanely, wisely, justly.

  5. Re most recent polling on immigration:

June 26: Support Rises For Giving Most Undocumented Immigrants A Pathway To Legal Status vs. Deportations, Quinnipiac University National Poll Finds

~ Nearly two-thirds of voters (64 percent) say they prefer giving most undocumented immigrants in the United States a pathway to legal status, while 31 percent say they prefer deporting most undocumented immigrants in the United States, according to a Quinnipiac (KWIN-uh-pea-ack) University national poll of registered voters released today.

This is a change from roughly six months ago. In Quinnipiac University’s December 18, 2024 poll, 55 percent of voters said they preferred giving most undocumented immigrants a pathway to legal status and 36 percent said they preferred deporting most undocumented immigrants in the United States.

… Voters 56 – 39 percent disapprove of the way U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, is doing its job. …

  6. Via Reuters:

~ Undocumented immigrants paid nearly $97 billion in federal, state and local taxes in 2022, according to a July 2024 report by the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP), which used data on taxpayers with ITINs to estimate tax revenue.

The ITEP report said undocumented immigrants contributed $59.4 billion to the federal government, including payments for federal income tax and federal social insurance such as Social Security, Medicare and Unemployment Insurance.

An estimated 8.7 million of the 11 million immigrants in the U.S. illegally in 2022 were of prime working age, according to a 2024 U.S. Department of Homeland Security report. ~

  7. Students said the majority of Quinnipiac community are leaning toward liberalism.

American Enterprise Institute reported that previous studies about political compositions and campus climate found that liberal and moderate professors on college campuses have always outnumbered their conservative counterparts. This is also the case for Quinnipiac, as public political contribution information suggests.

Data from the Center for Responsive Politics (CRP) revealed that Quinnipiac employees donated $102,887 to different political committees and campaigns during the 2020 election cycle (January 2019 to December 2020), the highest since at least 1994. The CRP also showed that 95.57% of those political contributions went to the Democratic Party.

When President Joe Biden was a candidate, he received $22,362 from Quinnipiac employees, the highest among all other recipients. In 2020, former President Donald Trump received only $592.

Political science professor Scott McLean said Republicans received fewer donations because there were few strong Republican congressional and state legislative candidates in local districts. He also said that Trump’s fundraising was far behind the Democrats and Biden.

  8. DJ, thank you for those reports. I think most Americans just want to be nice. They see the reports of what is happening and are appalled, a reasonable response. However, we should all be aware that many in the media have agendas and report accordingly or poorly reported simply by saying what they heard rather than digging in. I go back to the roofer and suggest he is not alone.

That said, people in our community have told my children to be very careful lest they be scooped up and deported due to their skin tone. What a horrible thing to say to young people! Though well meant I am sure.

  9. As Mumsee said, “our task is to figure out out how to work with them humanely, wisely, justly.’

“Thus says the Lord of hosts: ‘Execute true justice, Show mercy and compassion Everyone to his brother.” Zechariah 7:9

“For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.” James 2:13

  10. “The media” are many voices, many sources, many outlets. It’s not a monolith though many refer to “it” that way.

We can (and do) read and have access to many sources.

And I live in an area where this is happening in real time, we have first-hand accounts and views of what is going on all around us.

A relative halfway across the country told me he knew exactly what was happening in LA because he watched his local news cast. I said well, I live here and I see it first hand, I think I may know a bit more of what is actually happening here in real time.

  11. DJ, agreed. But we have a lot of people who grew up with ABC, CBS, NBC, Sixty Minutes, etc. they have had the sudden realization they had been led down a garden path and in reaction, search for whatever tickles their ears and will find it. We need to be willing to hear from a variety to get a more clear picture but many don’t know where to turn because of the lost trust. Way too much information and no way to properly verify.

One of the things I like about here is people report what they are hearing from around the country and beyond. But still, their sources?

in your case, as a reporter truly interested in reporting the truth, I am confident you are trying for that. And as a mature believer, I know you are aware of manipulation. But even so, you are relying on other reporters doing the same. It is difficult but that is why we must let go and turn our eyes to the King.

  12. Trusted sources are essential. Once a source breaks trust and is shown to have extreme bias I refuse to even read their “view”. It’s no longer reporting but propagandized agendas.

  14. My first doubt of the media was when local media reported in a biased manner of events I was part of or had seen with my own eyes. I try to take into account the natural bias of some media. I do like it, too, when I hear first-hand accounts from those I trust.

  15. It’s not ‘tired old tripe’ to try to assess the facts. Unless one has no interest in reality. There are significant costs and benefits associated with immigration.

    ——–

I’ve been ruminating over the situation with ICE and the more I think about it the more convinced I become. Trump did the right thing when he sent soldiers to the border. They should have been there all along.

We should take the 1trillion plus dollar defense budget we just passed and spend some of it building bases on the border. That would solve our illegal flow permanently.

I meant what I said about the conduct of ICE being unforgivable. I think we should abolish ICE altogether. Take that 150 billion that’s budgeted for immigration enforcement and split it between the FBI and the Federal court system. Let the FBI hunt real criminals for a change and do background checks on illegals in preparation for being seen by a Federal immigration judge.

As an agency, ICE has betrayed the trust of most Americans and its legitimate functions should be given to others with more oversight and better judgement.

  16. ICE and FBI agents have similar training. FBI agents make more and it is more difficult to be selected but they all must have a Bachelors degree and be less than 37. We know a couple FBI agents one a family member. The agencies have their own particular tasks to fulfill. Just because ICE agents have a mission to fulfill that some abhor others are quite thankful for their willingness to put their lives on the line to bring law and order making us safer.

  17. I don’t know anything about him, but from reading the article and links I’ll bet he’d like the idea of soldiers and bases on the border to ensure everyone comes through the gate not over the wall.

  18. Let’s not forget to include Fox News in the list of traditional media.

    🙂

It’s where many here get their news and consider it the absolute truth. Along with X. That is “media” as well.
