  1. Good morning, all. Another beautiful day here. Sadly, brother and sister in law have to head back to Boise. They left one dog at home in doggie camp or whatever so have to go retrieve him. Sis in law will remain in Boise but brother will return for a while.

  2. Happy birthday, Peter. Many blessings to you and yours in your new year of life!

I am enjoying the green, green, green around us, as well as the apple, berry blossoms and the flowers that don’t mind cold. There were frost warnings for last night, so plants would need to be protected. I haven’t visited any greenhouses yet because I can’t always be here to protect those plants before the chance of frost is over. I know there will be slim pickins by the time I get there, though. This is kind of like standing in line for a long time, because everyone wants to be first. It can be totally too early to buy plants, but that doesn’t stop people. I guess they do not mind bringing in and out daily or protecting in other ways. I often end up doing that, too, just to have a better selection. This is actually a more normal spring weatherwise. We may have frost chances well into June.

  3. Happy Birthday, Peter. I hope you have a festive birthday. Saturday is a good day to celebrate.

Son was here for over a week but now is visiting his girlfriend. It is great that we are on the long pathway between their two residences. She will have a long weekend off from work. He will be there for a longer visit, but I think she will be working so time together will be limited.

  4. Happy Birthday Peter!🎂

I have found the flowers ridiculously expensive right now. I purchased a couple mixed flower bowls at Home Depot for 20.00 each but I refuse to pay 30.00 for a hanging pot of petunias. Dutch Heritage nursery is having their annual open greenhouse sale this weekend but the crowds are insane. A friend and her ex opened the nursery years ago and it is now owned by a son. A great resource for locals if you have the temperament for crowds! 💐

We are in for a rainy period for the next couple weeks…much welcomed!

Janice have you met girlfriend? You may have mentioned that but I have forgotten…

  5. Yes, those flowers can be very expensive. One of the places we go to buy from for years and knew the owners (my parents knew them also) passed the business on to their daughter. Now the third generation is working there, too. The daughter is on the local public television station and often mentions that people need to be careful when, how and how they care for their plants because they are now so expensive. If you have a place to start your own, it would be good to do that. Our summers are short so it can be a big investment for a short period.

I admire how well the transition was for that family in handing down the business. It did not work out so well in our family. It is not always easy to do.

  6. Petunias. We hung several baskets along our walkway and porch. Hummingbirds like them. Husband buys several four packs at about four dollars per pack, and some soil. The young folk repot them in the old hanging pots. This year he bought them late April, early May and they are coming along nicely with a few extras in a flower box husband built on the deck. We did cover or bring them in twice but should be good until September when we might bring them in again some nights. We also have some volunteers that come up in the strawberry bed, where we have dumped the old dead flowers in the past.

  7. NJ, we met her last fall. She was in town with her parents for a short conference that Hillsdale was having in town. He picked her up, and we went with son and her to an Italian restaurant for a nice meal. She is very nice, Christian, theology and law degrees, very professional.

  8. I should also add that she is pretty. Given that she is quite brainy like son (he would probably qualify as a nerd, lol), she was much prettier than I expected. They have many things in common. He met her through her best friend at Baylor.

  9. We were asked, recently, to pray for an in-law of one of our children. He was having surgery for NPH (Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus), a disease I had never heard of. His wife kept asking him to be tested for it and they kept refusing, saying it is so rare. Finally, they did the test, and he had it. They drained some fluid and a man who had found it difficult to walk and talk was suddenly back to normal. He slowly lost what he gained, and doctors decided to put a shunt in. Again, he was back to normal. Now I hear Billy Joel is cancelling all his performances for the same condition.

  10. Happy birthday, Peter. Hope it was a lovely day.

Kathaleena, we finally put out our flowers and planted most of the vegetable plants today. We start all of our vegetables from seed, but don’t have room for starting flowers – those are a treat. Husband found 2 fuchsia planters at 2 for 1 last weekend so he brought those home for me. The hummingbirds are really happy.

We still need to plant the seeded veggies – peas, beans, carrots, beets, kohlrabi, dill, summer savoury, etc. Oh, we don’t start celery from seed – it would need to be started in January and the tiny plants are so fragile – worth it to pay for those.

  11. Kathaleena, we have a man connected to our church who has had two brain surgeries and keeps falling for unknown reasons. I wondered if it was pressure from fluid on the brain. I don’t know if it has been resolved yet. So many complications can happen with these sin broken bodies.

  12. With the help of my friend, Clara, a lot of help, planted flowers today. Took out some juniper to do it. There were several circles in the yard outlined by rocks that had juniper in them. So got that dug out and planted the flowers. We put netting over the top. Now we will see if the deer will allow them to grow. The hummingbirds already like them.

  13. Remembering my Dad today as we approach Memorial Day. No, he did not die then, but came home. He parachuted in the night before D-day and before the Battle of the Bulge, where they had them drop in the wrong location. He was a medic. Told the other fellow medic who was whining to leave and he stayed to take care of the wounded. Of course he ended up spending the rest of the was as a POW.

The last weeks before he died in 1994, he went to a reunion in Seattle of his unit. He wanted to see those fellows one last time. My stepmom said that many came up to speak to him. I think that he went to see the chaplain, who wasn’t there. He died one or two weeks later. The bond was what drew him.
