  1. I guess we will have one more warm day, before turning to normal later in the day. The wind will bring the average.

Jo, the hardware stores have those wonderful sliding disks, too, for moving furniture. We have used them quite often.

One of the books I am reading is a biography about Jimmy Stewart. I found it interesting that he had no interest in becoming an actor. He was studying to be an architect. I found this particular quote of interest: “I took one look at the…Theater…and I think I had my first thought that I might just want to be an actor after all. It was such a beautiful building. I think a beautiful building can have the ssame effect as a beautiful woman. You see it-or her-and you want to stay. Maybe it was my architects’s eye that kind of fell for that place. But I knew I wanted to be there.”

I was thinking of this in relation to mumsee’s comment about the building not being important (or something like that) in worshipping the Lord. In a sense that is certainly true. We know we can worship by a river, on a rock, under a tree or anywhere else. Yet, there is something about a building that lifts our thoughts towards heaven and an awesome God. Without the Holy Spirit the buildings can be dead, empty buildings. However, buildings can lift our senses to God and attract others to Him.

We have a church quite close to us (by country standards) and there are reasons we don’t attend there. We know and love some who do go there. Recently, the outside area has gotten quite unattractive looking. As I recently went past, I was thinking that the looks of the grounds would discourage me from attending. That would probably be overcome by an enthusiastic member’s encouragement, but first impressions do matter.

There is a wide range of buildings in which Christians worship and teach all over the world. It is interesting that believers almost always desire to build something beautiful and meaningful, though, no matter their circumstances. I do realize there are house churches, of course, for small congregations and that cathedrals can be made more for the pride of some than for the glory of God. Only God knows hearts, of course.

These are just my musings this morning.

  2. the story of our church is that the architect was praying over the design. As he raised his head he looked at his hands that were clasped in front of him. So we have a soaring roof. In front is a very large window with a large stained glass cross

  3. When we visit caves we see the awesome beauty God created and worship Him for it.

As for the looks of the building and grounds, yes, one would tend to shy away from a shabby looking building But if the Lord is honored and the gospel is preached, then it matters not what people see physically. After all, look at photos of thriving churches in poverty stricken, Third World countries and tell me those folks are there for the beauty of the building and grounds.

  4. Cool! I have been there before.

Churches: yes, the buildings are generally designed to proclaim the glory of God. Often, the workers will leave a gift to Him. A beautiful carving or inscription that will be hidden as long as the building stands or is reconstructed, the workman’s praise to God, seen by God. I have been in many beautiful churches: old Methodist churches, the cadet chapel at West Point, cathedrals in Europe, the Enormous Waldensian church in Turin as well as the cathedral holding the Shroud of Turin. Also in the woods, cabins, community centers, etc. God was there and worship as well. But in the churches specifically designed to reflect His glory and creativity, there is a cool ambiance that draws one to worship. A feeling of unity down through the ages with fellow believers. A bit of heaven on earth.

  5. It’s snowing…wet heavy springtime snow.

Nice photo Peter. We have not been there yet but SD is on our list of states where we may move!

Lots of changes in my life and I’m not quite ready for another at the moment. In His timing…always.

  6. Love that majestic header . . . all the work that went into that (the stone carving)! I hope everyone stayed safe while working on it.

We’ve had a busy day. Art had a procedure on his back to deaden some nerves to see if it would enable him to walk more. This is the first of two tests before they decide on permanent ablation of the nerves.

He took me to Sam’s this morning. The cashier said they will still have registers open but most people now use Scan and Go. That is different from what the news sounded like.

Then I had Bible study. The leader had their new border collie puppy, Charlie Jack, with her. A lot of puppy love in the group!

  7. We were at Sam’s yesterday. It is about a 65-mile drive, and I forgot the shirt I was going to return. There were people to show you how to use the phone, but I didn’t see them push anyone.

I have been to Mt. Rushmore a couple of times, since we live relatively close to South Dakota. I am sure that photo is better than the ones I got on my old style camera.

  8. We drove to the North Shore of Lake Superior. It was in the low 80’s. Tomorrow they are expected to get to 49 degrees. The wind will shift. It was beautiful out today and we had a day we could take advantage of that.

  9. Mt. Rushmore is much more impressive in person than I thought it would be.

Kathleena- I use a 10 year old Canon digital SLR with a 50mm lens. I don’t like cell phone cameras that much, but the newer, expensive ones have great cameras. I can’t afford that much for a phone.

  10. My brother was out taking pictures of the stars at night when he was here a couple months ago, with his phone. He was shocked when he expanded the image and realized he had captured Andromeda. He was also shocked when I reminded him that the millions or billions of stars we see at night were mostly stars in our arm of the Milky Way. With other galaxies thrown in but not the individual stars. What an amazing God we serve. And phone cameras are pretty good too!
