I know what it is like to feel the need to leave the Democrat party. We did not run to the Republican party. We had a lot of company.
I agree with Cheryl about President Trump’s audience not being just citizens. There is a whole world listening, especially whoever is now leading in Iran. I agree with HRW about the crass use of language. It shows the downward trajectory of our society. That is going on in both parties and is sad and pathetic.
I can only hope that those listening in Iran know Trump is a president who follows through. I don’t doubt that those in charge don’t mind being martyrs and they sure don’t mind that others are killed from what we see. I pray for God’s people there and the innocent.
I pray we start electing better statesmen and women and I pray for all in office to have a fear of God the beginning of wisdom and that they look to God for wisdom. While I appreciate and respect the lady’s decision, she clearly sees as well that the Dem party won’t be changing back, and that truth be told, they no longer want principled traditionalists, especially the Christian type.
And truth be told, the Rs don’t seem to have much use for such people either, unless it’s election time.
Pray, play the hand we’re dealt, and hang on, because I don’t see it improving.
Yeah — adding MMIW to the LGBQT…….etc label is bizarre. Our current Liberal PM is a “fiscal conservative” ie neo-liberal economists. His economic policies would fit in well with Reagan. He reflects the Liberal party’s tendency to be fiscally conservative and socially liberal — an identity which suits most Canadians and explains the party’s success. I’m sure Carney just ignores the social liberals as he focuses on finance and trade.
Do I really need to explain NATO again?? It’s a defensive alliance. Attacking Iran is an offensive war, NATO doesn’t apply here. You can’t start a war, realise you bit off more than you could chew, and then cry for help. 9/11 was considered an attack on an NATO nation and thus NATO responded with an invasion of Afghanistan. The invasion of Iraq in 2003 was a war of choice hence Bush needed to assemble a coalition of the willing prior to starting the war. Trump should’ve followed Bush’s example if he wanted help.
Btw the US bases in Germany is quite important for the US military, in terms of power projection, logistics and health care. Despite not joining the coalition of the willing, bases in Germany probably saved American lives providing first world health care only a few hours away from Iraq not too mention the logistic support it gave. For a current example, the aircraft carrier Gerald Ford docked in Split, Croatia for repairs. Without NATO it would’ve had to go all the way back to the US. If the US wants to continue to meddle in foreign wars, it needs its European bases.
kathaleena — the article raises an interesting question – Can a religious person participate in politics? Politics are about what is possible and the art of compromise. Can a religious person do that or want to do that?
In Europe, most Protestants avoided politics until after WW2 when they formed Christian Democrat parties as an alternative to Communist/Socialist parties and acted more as a centrist party. In the US South some white evangelicals were involved as a reaction to desegregation but mass active participation didn’t start until the Carter/Reagan years. Black Christians and Catholics were always involved but mostly as Democrats.
At some point the need for compromise presents a moral dilemma — do you work with people who have different principles than you in terms of abortion, marriage etc. Or do you work with people who have different beliefs in terms of welfare, health, refugees etc. Catholics have generally worked with Liberals here and Democrats in the US because of their social polices — health care, refugees, etc but tried to work against the pro choice message with limited success (they won the moral argument but not the legal argumetn) For American evangelicals its more about do they continue to support leaders who’s behaviour is obviously non-Christian in order to “win” the Supreme Court among other issues. Thirty years ago evangelicals were the moral high ground against a compromised Clinton yet today they support an even more compromised Trump. Have they compromised too much for the “win”?
In any case, its not my dilemma but it is interesting to watch.
Not only can Christians participate in politics, I think our system of government calls for us to do so. It was started with mostly Christians and also ministers. Of course, there has to be compromise with our system. We are often voting for the lesser of two evils, although some opt for hoping they can bring in a new party. Yes, it is interesting to watch. I know who wins ultimately which helps.
