  1. That must have been before the 30 inches came down?

I am not sure what you meant by no one else working either, Dj. My husband worked most holidays his whole life. There are many industries that must work holidays for various reasons. Not to mention the safety services like police, fire and medical personnel. I am sure you know that, so perhaps you meant something else.

I heard a tree fell on a car on a highway we often travel. There are so many trees near roads that come down with high winds. Mostly, someone moves them off the roads. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but that must be heart stopping for a moment!

  2. Kathaleena, I’m sorry that wasn’t clear, at first I couldn’t figure out what you were referring to. I was merely saying that many of the folks I need to contact are government or big industry people and, yes, “most” of them typically have these holidays off. It apparently was worded carelessly (I haven’t gone back to check).

I’m very sorry that was taken out of context and to be other than was it was meant to be.

The blog isn’t as easy or relaxed as it once was and I need to remind myself of that as I’ve unintentionally stepped into that before. We’ve all been on edge here for a few years and we’re now a much smaller group so offhand (careless?) comments can be read or taken as offensive when they weren’t meant to be, perhaps because of the source. I apologize.

  3. And your “either” remark (a specific reference to something earlier always helps when we’re on a new day and/or a different thread) makes me think others complained as well. I’m ot going to search all of that out but again, I am sorry.

  4. DJ, I teased you about the “nobody else working” comment, figuring you meant people you normally interact with in your work. I hope the smiley face helped make it clear it was in jest.

  5. Ah, thank you Kevin. Sometimes I feel like it’s walking on egg shells here and I’m causing undue offense on top of the normal stress we’ve all been under.

And yes, the context was the people I needed to reach to do my work, not everyone in the whole nation. lol

  6. Good afternoon. It was a good morning. I saw the neurologist/optic nerve specialist. I did not previously share that earlier in the year I had a MRI to rule out a brain tumor as a possible cause for my vision decline. The MRI showed 2 small growths between the skull and lining of the brain, not in the brain.

I had to wait some months before doing a repeat MRI to see if they were growing. No growth would indicate benign as the doc expected. The place where they were has receptors for the type breast cancer I had removed so there was that scare factor going on.

I had my second MRI the day after the election (the medical appointment that the garbage man came into the waiting room). I had to wait almost a week before seeing the doctor today for results.

There has been no change and they are tiny. I will return for a consult and vision check in 6 months and do one more MRI in a year.

The doc talked a little about fear in waiting for results. I told her and the attendant that I actually believe in Jesus and kept telling myself, “Have no fear, Jesus is here.” The doc said that she gets that (she is Jewish and a wonderful person).

  7. Kevin @12:37: And smiley faces, as frivolous as this maybe can sound, really do help relay a “good-natured” intent on some of those posts, so thank you again for that (I still haven’t been able to go back to yesterday’s thread, may not have time today to do so). Communicating only in writing requires some extra measures sometimes. 🙂 But that’s all, over and out.

  8. When I looked back, I realized I had taken the comment exactly as meant. I have worked for state government and had the holiday off; later, I worked in small private businesses with hardly any days off, so I understood precisely what was meant.

  9. Yeah, it is so easy to either misinterpret a benign comment or for a comment to be accidentally worded not quite right.

I have found that it helps to ask a question like, “What do you mean by _____________?” or “When you say, _____________, do you mean _____________?” That has kept me from drawing the wrong conclusion a few times.

But unfortunately, there are some people who cannot or will not see that their wording was not clear. I’ve seen that a few times on Facebook posts, in which, instead of graciously rephrasing their comment, they will tell the person asking that it is already clear and they just have to read better. Yikes! How rude! (That would be rude even if the comment was perfectly clear, but seems even worse when it isn’t.)

  10. Years ago, I did the daring thing about speaking of race in an office devotional to about 70 people with about a half dozen black people in the room. One of them walked out early on; the rest not only stayed, but were visibly moved by what I said, and several men and women of various ethnicities had tears in their eyes as they left.

The one who had left early on in my devotional asked me to come to her office. She asked, “What was the purpose of your talk? Were you trying to tell people to tolerate black people?”

I took a deep breath and said gently, “What do you mean by ‘tolerate’?”

That careful question tore down the wall. She asked me to explain why I had started out with my opening illustration and why I read one particular quote, and we talked and listened and I think we both understood each other better.

  11. Blogs, social media and text messages are not the best way to communicate clearly. At least now there are emojis to make something a little clearer. Part of the problem now a days is the fact that people don’t learn proper writing techniques so they don’t know how to express themselves in a clear way.

They also depend on spell check and auto correct and don’t proofread.

  12. oh, my, what fun on this blog. I loved that link with the mom reporter. Especially the comment at the end about gentle parenting. That seems to be what my youngest is trying and I have to bite my tongue. I have had wonderful success with her kids once she is gone. The youngest tried to have a tantrum over not enough milk on her cereal. Just started yelling. Somehow God gave me the strength to just stand there with a bland face, no criticism, and just quietly look at her. She screamed for a while, peeking at me. Got no reaction at all, not even a comment. Quit the yelling, went to the frig, got the milk, poured it on her cereal and then put it away. I said absolutely nothing. It was difficult at the end to not laugh.

Just finished my bsf lesson on Rev. 4 and then read the notes. The notes were excellent. Probably the best that I have ever read. I got a lot from the study, but the notes took it so much deeper, amazing.

    Looking forward to class tomorrow.

Oh I went to see about tires for my car after asking my friends where they go. She gave me three quotes, high, middle, low. I knew that I wouldn’t go low. Then I asked if I could see the actual tires. When I saw them, there was something about the tread pattern on the high priced ones that I really liked and I went with the top of the line. Not something I have done before. They have an 80,000 mile warranty.
