  22. I am with you on that, NJ. But I recognize that there are those with strongly held beliefs, especially of the predestined Christians (but not all of those), who are of another mindset than those who lean toward freewill beliefs, and they seem to believe that God already has a done deal so all they need do is sit back and let Him take care of it while they watch.

    I think God has some kind of balancing act going on with freewill and predestination. None of us can fully understand it with what He gave us in the word. Maybe it is in His plan for some to lean one way and others to lean the other way. Thinking on it that way allows me to give more grace for the others on the teeter-totter.

    We don’t have to be angry at those who see it differently. They don’t have to keep pushing their views on us as if we are less righteous. I do believe God chose us all to give us His gift of faith. We believe differently therefore act differently.

    It is frustrating, yes, indeed. It can feel insulting and offensive, yes, indeed. But we can let God’s love prevail. I am telling myself this as much as anyone else.

Janice – As one who has come to lean more towards the doctrine of predestination (but still wonder if, as you said, the truth is an unfathomable combination of the two views), I will say that no, we don’t believe that “all [we] need do is sit back and let Him take care of it while [we] watch.”

    Like most Christians of both the “freewill” and “predestination” views, and those in between, DJ and I believe that we should seek God and pray about who to vote for. Why God wouldn’t lead all praying believers to support the same candidates and political views is a mystery. But that goes into the “His ways are far higher than our ways” basket, I guess.

    As for “pushing their views on us as if we are less righteous,” I can assure you that we don’t feel that way. Besides that, these threads are supposed to be open to all of us sharing our views, and the views of the majority are expressed much more often than we express our views.

    Regarding “as if we are less righteous,” neither DJ nor I have said anything like that, but we have been told many times that not casting a vote for Trump is in effect casting a vote for evil.

  32. A decision to vote for neither of the main candidate options — when neither is deemed “good” choices — is not inaction. It is most certainly an action.

    Janice, I have to echo what Kizzie said, we do not consider ourselves “more righteous.”

    Neither are we supporting evil for having different voting preferences.

    I’m sorry that other views aren’t welcome here. It didn’t used to be that way, but clearly the times have changed. Opposing views, on the most contentious days — and when they dare to be expressed — are sometimes met with vitriol and unfair accusations. It’s not pleasant. Or fair.

    We realize we are not welcome and so we don’t come here very often. When we do, I’d say those of us in the unwanted minority are intentionally careful about what we say – and how we say it.

  33. I do think predestination is fairly clear, scripturally, as is God’s sovereignty. It’s hard to miss, though none of it can be fully grasped by us – because we are the creatures, God is the Creator. Someday it will all make sense, even to us.

    But I generally think it’s advisable — picking up on what M posted the other day — for all of us (myself included first and foremost in this, trust me) — to spend more time learning from the scriptures during what has become a very contentious time in our little (and likely transitory but loved) nation here on earth. It will pass eventually. But these are some rough waters we’re in. I don’t like to see us turning on each other.

  35. I used to be predestination only having been brought up in a mainline Presbyterian church. Eventually after reading the Bible I had more understanding. It was something I spoke with the Baptist pastor about before joining. It was a bit of a sticking point for me. There are Scriptures that support both. The pastor said he does not know how God does it but He reconciles the two. I accepted that and joined the Baptist church realizing there is a place for both to happen and also realizing some churches lean one way and other churches (made up of individuals) lean the other way. I think those that don’t master a balancing act between the two can find themselves thinking either that their actions are more of a deciding factor in how God acts or accepting that inaction is okay because God is gonna do what He’s gonna do. These are my personal observations. I don’t expect others to agree with how I view things, but wanted to explain so I can be clear as mud.

    I don’t mean to offend, just saying how I view the situation. I truly believe we all have those logs in our eyes but are trying to see around them and give grace.

  41. Having found myself the bottom dog in a dog pile a while back I will say those feeling unwanted here are not alone. You may be in a different corner but in the same ring so to speak. I have had my words twisted by some here, called out to be “in sin” and thoroughly dismissed as almost being a heretic. So yes, when that happens I step away. I don’t need to be patted on the head for “controlling” my tongue and I don’t need to be chastised for speaking up.

    When there are two choices one must choose. We all enjoy our freedoms in this country. If “the other side” wins, which can only happen by fraud and those remaining silent…we lose those freedoms. So in essence when not standing with the ones on the front line they burn down their own houses. In the end we are all responsible for our own choices.

    I do see some of what Janice pointed out in her post. The “oh I have been where you are” as though some are more “enlightened” than others.
