Bait and switch is not a new form of deception. What you are led to believe you’re getting, is not what you end up with. And the temptation to rationalize it is in our DNA passed down to us from our first father and mother.
Do we really think Eve would have stopped to chat with the snake if Satan had appeared outwardly as his character really is? If a wild eyed rabid wolf had confronted Eve how different might her response have been? Scripture gives us hints at what she might have been up against:
“You were in Eden, the garden of God;
Every precious stone was your covering:
The sardius, topaz, and diamond,
Beryl, onyx, and jasper,
Sapphire, turquoise, and emerald with gold.”
(Eze. 28:13)
And he offered her god-like powers:
“You will not certainly die,” the serpent said to the woman.
“For God knows that when you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (Gen 3:4,5)
It all sounds beautiful and impressive, doesn’t it? And terribly seductive. Beauty and power have always been seductive, and when you put the two together…? Well, we’ll find ourselves sleepwalking into our first mother’s footsteps if the Lord doesn’t intervene to wake us up.
So what prompts this bit of sermonizing? I had a small eureka moment when I read a headline a couple of days ago. A certain politician (and honestly it could have as easily been any number of politicians) decried the protests at a specific university because of the threats and violence. He said, with great conviction, that these universities should not receive government funding. It was a traditional call for law and order. It was the kind of speech that resonates with conservatives rather than democrats.
As I listened, I thought “he’s right, they shouldn’t”. I agreed with him. And that was the eureka moment. What he said was true strictly speaking, but he was out there garnering support for things that he must know he will absolutely never expend his personal political capital to do. Those things are so incredibly low on his list of priorities that they will never ever make it off the stump speech. But if he says enough of those things that are important to others and relatively unimportant to him, people like me who believe his words will vote for him. In the breasts of most normal law abiding people, he stirs good will and popular support with that speech. And with that support he can get votes to get the next round of funding for whatever country is currently being destabilized or whatever war is being hatched which are the important things to him.
I call it a eureka moment not because didn’t already know how politics works, but because suddenly felt like I was watching the bait and switch in slow motion. For a split second, I realized how Eve must have felt. It was a living color illustration that we are indeed the sons and daughters of Eve. Deceiving and deceived.
I’m sure Xi will respond when he’s done laughing hysterically.
People don't realize just how dangerous this rhetoric is. This is in effect the US demanding China become hostile to Russia by stopping to supply items that "power its industrial base"… meaning asking China to join the West in trying to weaken Russia as a country.
SHOCKING: GSA (General Services Administration) was holding boxes of classified documents from the Trump administration in Virginia and contacted him and demanded he retrieve them once he left office.
