Good foggy morning here. Mike and I and two children head out this morning to try to figure out social security, followed by speech. Son in law will tend my dad.
Oh, and no pumpkins here. I bought some candy just in case, but we haven’t had any children for a couple of years now. And also, per your question a few threads ago, no fat jeans either. I do have some skinny ones and several with various wider legs. We live in an era where there are so many possibilities for style. Much more than we had years ago, IMO.
One of the realtors in town last year delivered little pumpkins to all the houses in our neighborhood (with his card attached — he does US flags in the summer). But none so far this year. 😦
I have some nice plastic ones in the garage, they have a hole in the bottom so you can put a flickering battery light/candle there — no faces.
One house we pass by on the dog walks has a lot of cute pumpkins out, including a series of medium sized ones in a row that spell out BOO!, one letter per pumpkin. And another vertical pumpkin stack also in the yard which is cute.

No snow here but some wild winds, coming off the deserts, so cold at night and in the mornings, but it’ll warm up today to the high 70s. The firefighters are all worried, remaining on standby. It’s a typical fall occurrence here, they’re also called “devil” winds due to the time of year. Our winds typically come in off the ocean and are cool and moist; but this brings the powerful winds sweeping east to west from inland toward the coastline.
We’ve had some rain, but my go bag is still packed.
The last day for the pool was yesterday so I went. I almost wish I had stayed home. They had gone through and taken everything out. Not even one chair.
Now I have to decide what to do next. Somehow the outdoor pool is not very appealing.
Got a table at an estate sale. Still trying to figure out how to bring it inside
Pulling on a tarp?
It is counter height but only 22 inches wide so it will be an island in my kitchen
Oh this and the above are Jo
Up here we have a lot of gruesome scary decorations. It bothers me to see them, I can’t imagine what children are thinking.
My daughter’s dog even began to panick when a werewolf creature–10 feet high–began moving toward her.
The skeletons, too, are huge.
Evil all around us.
Even down the street a little, the Christian family has filled, filled, their yard with blow-up characters–it’s been a wild west down there for 6 weeks. Not gruesome, though, just lots of ghosts, pirates (?), and other garbage. I can hardly wait to see what they do for Christmas . . . (not)
We have some “blow up” Halloween characters in yards, including one with a clock that constantly spins — what movie was that from? Disney of some kind, I’m sure — and a character at a piano?
But yes, some of the decor is creepy & even gruesome. I stopped with Abby one night in front of one of the more elaborate yards (a tribute to scary movies such as Frankenstein, Dracula etc., complete with movie posters; the couple who live there work in set design and labeled it this year the “monster mash” house) and they have a big fake spiker that occasionally LEAPS right off the fence post, caused me to jump back!
And lots of skeletons, including some on yoga mats in yoga poses and the appropriate wardrobe in one yard. At least there’s some humor and creativity …
As for impacts on kids, all of us recently had to pare down the numerous “scary story” entries from area schools we received this year and the high school entries, especially, were just blood and gore, beyond dark.
Yes, every year they seem to want to top last year. New in our neighborhood this year are graveyards with skeletal arms and legs sticking up out of the ground.
I met some new neighbors, a family with two boys, while walking my dog past their house as they were laying out their Halloween graveyard. The six-year-old told me they have two dogs. The parents insisted they had only one, until the boy brought out the skeletal dog they hadn’t set up yet. Oy.
Our CVS store gave me a chuckle a few weeks ago when they set up their Halloween displays just inside the doors. They have a full size skeleton sitting in a lawn chair, dressed in a red shirt with a CVS name tag that says “Jake”.
Husband says we had at least 6 inches of snow yesterday and it is just what we need. Heavy moisture content watering this dry land! But it is soooo cold . This morning we awakened to 5 degrees outside!! Thankful for a warm home!
And thank you AJ…😊
Thursday my foster baby is coming for a visit from NYC! She is bringing her parents, husband and two year old baby girl!!! She is 31 years old now and I recall so vividly picking her up from the hospital. How good is our Lord to bless us with continued connection. It is her parents who moved in with us for 6 months!
I have a big pumpkin a wee one but I had to bring them indoors to avoid freezing. I keep them on my porch so that the deer and squirrels won’t eat them!
None of the neighbors around us have any Halloween decor. I am thankful. But I do sort of miss the giant happy blown up fabric pumpkin my neighbors, the married ladies, had for years from Charlie Brown and the great pumpkin. It was never scary but unique in the neighorhood before it was a thing to do anything more than carved pumpkins.
While on our two hour trip to the out of our city Social Security office, Art saw a tractor in a field with a skeleton sitting in the driver’s seat. We passed so fast that I missed it.
Neighborhoods all around us have all the scary stuff mixed with more kid-friendly yatds. Kosher Kroger gave mini Baby Ruth bars at checkout today so I had one as a treat after PT. A young fellow, maybe in his twenties, stopped me in the produce department to tell mr he really liked the top I was wearing. Now that was S-C-A-R-Y! He seemed very sincere.
Kevin @3:15, I hope Jake handed you a shopping basket?
Our CVS no longer has rolling carts or even hand baskets stacked that you can grab when you come in, you have to request one from “behind the counter.” I guess they were getting stolen too often. ?
Death is an enemy and I think Halloween and all the crazy ‘decorations’ are a way for some people to counter it by laughing at it (because they have no other way to deal with the fearsomeness of it?).
Good logical thought about how some want to deal with death. It’s a situ rather laugh than cry about it for those who seem far removed from it. I doubt Halloween is ever celebratrd in war torn areas, but Christmas is welcome and sometimes has been occasion for a ceasefire.
Maybe one day there will be World Selfies on tv. 😀
We only have one house down the road that has a huge hay bale turned into a giant pumpkin. I see a lot of decorations in town. The very tall ones seem to be the newest things. It is sad when you hear some people who insist on putting up skeletons in suggestive poses. Some people always have to push the limits. If only we had a society that firmly stood against the ugliness and immorality.
Good morning! May all the carved pumpkins wear happy faces! Do you have a pumpkin display? I do not this year.

Because those inland winds pick up speed as they racethrough our mountain passes, sweeping west, this makes for a lot of wildfire worries. -dj

I have not seen any Halloween decor in my neighborhood. Come to think of it, I did not see any in Lewiston either. Maybe I was not looking for it.
