Whether it was stone faced Jerry Nadler, pathetic Pelosi and her childish shredding of her copy of the speech at the end, or Omar, Talib, and Pocan refusing to stand for the grandson of Charles McGee, the former Tuskegee Airman introduced by Trump, or the look of horror when Trump announced the Medal of Freedom for Rush, or looking bitter when a young girl was given a scholarship to escape her failing public school, they showed their true, ugly colors.

There has long been a revered SOTU tradition that the Speaker of the House does not exhibit opposition or ridicule for the remarks of a president (even if he is from the opposing party). Pelosi is shattering that tradition by nodding in the negative and shaking her head.

I watched the SOTU after work last night. It was one of the very best I have ever seen. Trump outdid himself in every way–and without a trace of bitterness. And I think there is another good campaign ad in that last few minutes where Pelosi tore up the President’s speech. It shows what she and the Dem party think of the things that are important to most Americans.
I was really sorry to hear about Rush and I hope he recovers. Awarding him the medal of freedom in the most public venue at the President’s disposal was pure gold. :–)

The total also was a sharp gain from the 199,000 in December, which was revised down 3,000 from the initial count.

“I don’t care how you feel about somebody. That was probably the most disrespectful thing I have ever seen in my life. Because, when she did that, it just tore us up. We couldn’t believe it,” he continued.”

There are plenty of norms being destroyed in the era of Trump. But people need to stop blaming him alone, for he’s hardly the only one casting aside traditions for politics.
“The House has its share of infamies, great and small, real and symbolic, and has been the scene of personal infamies from brawls to canings. But the conduct of Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the State of the Union address this week will go down as a day of infamy for the chamber as an institution. It has long been a tradition for House speakers to remain stoic and neutral in listening to the address. However, Pelosi seemed intent on mocking President Trump from behind his back with sophomoric facial grimaces and head shaking, culminating in her ripping up a copy of his address.
Her drop the mic moment will have a lasting impact on the House. While many will celebrate her trolling of the president, she tore up something far more important than a speech. Pelosi has shredded decades of tradition, decorum, and civility that the nation could use now more than ever. The House speaker is more than a political partisan, particularly when carrying out functions such as the State of the Union address. A president appears in the House as a guest of both chambers of Congress. The House speaker represents not her party or herself but the entirety of the chamber. At that moment, she must transcend her own political ambitions and loyalties.
Tensions for this address were high. The House impeachment managers sat as a group in front of the president as a reminder of the ongoing trial. That can be excused as a silent but pointed message from the Democrats. Trump hardly covered himself with glory by not shaking hands with Pelosi. I also strongly disliked elements of his address which bordered on “check under your seat” moments, and the awarding of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh with the Presidential Medal of Freedom inside the House gallery like a Mardi Gras bead toss. However, if Trump made the State of the Union look like Oprah, then Pelosi made it look like Jerry Springer.
What followed was an utter disgrace. First, Pelosi dropped the traditional greeting before the start of the address, “Members of Congress, I have the high privilege and distinct honor of presenting to you the president of the United States.” Instead, she simply announced, “Members of Congress, the president of the United States.” It was extremely petty and profoundly inappropriate. Putting aside the fact that this is not her tradition, but that of the House, it is no excuse to note that the president was impeached.
Such an indignity was not imposed on President Clinton during his own impeachment proceeding, and anyone respecting due process would note that Trump has been accused, not convicted, at this point in the constitutional process. Pelosi proceeded to repeatedly shake her head, mouth words to others, and visibly disagree with the address. It was like some distempered distracting performance art behind the president.”
“Pelosi has demolished decades of tradition with this poorly considered moment. Of course, many will celebrate her conduct and be thrilled by the insult to Trump. However, even those of us who disagree with his policies should consider what Pelosi destroyed in her moment of rage. She shredded the pretense of governing with civility and dignity in the House. Notably, she did not wait to rip up her copy of the speech until after she left the House floor. Pelosi wanted to do it at the end of the speech, in front of the camera, with the president still in the chamber.

If Pelosi cannot maintain the dignity and neutrality of her office at the State of the Union, she should resign as the speaker of the House of Representatives.”
Not that anyone will be shocked, but Romney just announced he’s voting to impeach the president, despite the clear lack of evidence. He will be the only R that will.
He’s trying to justify his disloyalty to the party, the president, constitution, and the rule of law to Chris Wallace right now.

I was watching the State of the Union address at one of the links AJ provided. Initially, I was only going to read the transcript, but with the comments about Pelosi’s behavior, I decided to watch it instead. What childish behavior! Not only Pelosi, but also those who sat looking grumpy rather than applauding. (Then again, is that something routinely done by the opposition party during a president’s SOTU? Since I rarely watch one, I’m not sure.)
But I also think I saw, at the beginning, that President Trump did not take her hand to shake it when she offered it, right before the speech. I was surprised by that.
One more thing – If there is a standing ovation after almost every pronouncement, then standing ovations have lost their meaning. The speech would have been over much sooner if they didn’t applaud and/or give a standing ovation after everything he said. They should do what some events do: Have them hold their applause until the end.
It is typical for one side to clap and the other not to clap — but it’s been much starker/glaring contrast in recent years, I’d say, as the nation has become more and more openly divided.
Yes, Trump should have shook her hand, assuming he saw it extended. I’ve seen the back-and-forth of who insulted whom first (she didn’t give him the routine introduction, for example). They both have their petty sides, to be honest.
But the ripping up of the speech was pretty much beyond the pale.
As for the faces she made — yeah, annoying. That said, it’s a tough spot to be in, sitting right behind the opposition party president (whom you and the party you lead intensely dislike) and having to be on camera for the whole time. Awkward.
Remember that Romney is, as a Mormon, still working his way up to being a god. He is not on the same track as either the Republicans or Democrats. I don’t care for him, but I do pity him for how he has been misguided and deceived by his belief in a false religion.
I just watched the vote…Romney infuriates me…he should just go ahead and switch to the party to which his allegiance lies…that is not the conservative Republicans.
I appreciated the applause last night and felt it appropriate. To me we are invited into he nation’s living room. Our leader speaks to our citizenry. Some of our citizens are highlighted as they are invited to the gallery….and last night was exceptional. I am in hopes that the Dems will now let it go but nothing with them will surprise me at this point 😞
Maybe you all knew this but I hadn’t ever noticed: There is usually no State of the Union address when a new president is coming into office. Carter sent a written message when he was on his way out in 1981; nobody’s bothered to do even that since then.
(There’s no requirement that it be given as a speech, nor that it be annual. He shall from time to time give to Congress information of the State of the Union and recommend to their Consideration such measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient.

As for the faces she made — yeah, annoying. That said, it’s a tough spot to be in, sitting right behind the opposition party president (whom you and the party you lead intensely dislike) and having to be on camera for the whole time. Awkward.

Remember that Romney is, as a Mormon, still working his way up to being a god. He is not on the same track as either the Republicans or Democrats. I don’t care for him, but I do pity him for how he has been misguided and deceived by his belief in a false religion.

I just watched the vote…Romney infuriates me…he should just go ahead and switch to the party to which his allegiance lies…that is not the conservative Republicans.
I appreciated the applause last night and felt it appropriate. To me we are invited into he nation’s living room. Our leader speaks to our citizenry. Some of our citizens are highlighted as they are invited to the gallery….and last night was exceptional. I am in hopes that the Dems will now let it go but nothing with them will surprise me at this point 😞

Maybe you all knew this but I hadn’t ever noticed: There is usually no State of the Union address when a new president is coming into office. Carter sent a written message when he was on his way out in 1981; nobody’s bothered to do even that since then.
(There’s no requirement that it be given as a speech, nor that it be annual.

The danger for the Dems is they could very well lose not only the independents but the moderates in their own party.
Trump, if he can, just needs to know how to step back and let them go at it.
