“Targeting Turkey’s economy, President Donald Trump announced sanctions Monday aimed at restraining the Turks’ assault against Kurdish fighters and civilians in Syria — an assault Turkey began after Trump announced he was moving U.S. troops out of the way.

The United States also called on Turkey to stop the invasion and declare a ceasefire, and Trump is sending Vice President Mike Pence and national security adviser Robert O’Brien to Ankara as soon as possible in an attempt to begin negotiations. Pence said Trump spoke directly to Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who promised not attack the border town of Kobani, which in 2015 witnessed the Islamic State group’s first defeat in a battle by U.S.-backed Kurdish fighters.

“President Trump communicated to him very clearly that the United States of American wants Turkey to stop the invasion, implement an immediate ceasefire and to begin to negotiate with Kurdish forces in Syria to bring an end to the violence,” Pence said.”

“‘Straight Shooter’ Justice Dept. Watchdog Has Held His Fire on Powerful People”

“As Justice Department Inspector General Michael E. Horowitz finalizes his probe of allegations of abuses surrounding the surveillance of a Trump campaign aide, some colleagues and Republican lawmakers say they have no doubt he’s conducted a tough, impartial investigation. They expect him to deliver a hard-hitting report, due for release next month.

Others are more skeptical. While acknowledging that Horowitz is widely respected, these critics say his work has long been hampered by biases, conflicts and a tendency to play favorites, as in past probes of former FBI Director James Comey, whom Horowitz worked under in New York.

Their main complaint is that he pulls his punches.

Horowitz’s investigation of the FBI’s handling of the Hillary Clinton email case, for example, concluded that many of Comey’s explanations for his dubious actions were “unconvincing,” while stopping short of saying that Comey lied to investigators. Comey asserted implausibly that he delayed acting on a mountain of new Clinton email evidence discovered on a laptop in New York because he was never briefed about it until nearly a month after his top aides found out about it in September 2016.

In probing whether Comey illegally leaked classified information to the New York Times, Horowitz in the end accepted his argument that the memo of a conversation with President Trump was sensitive but “not classified” – even though the memo contained information about the FBI’s ongoing counterintelligence investigation of the president’s national security adviser.

“I see a pattern of him pulling up short and trying to be a bit of a statesman instead of making the hard calls,” said Chris Swecker, a 24-year veteran of the FBI who served as assistant director of its criminal investigative division, where he oversaw public corruption cases.”

    https://thefederalist.com/2019/10/11/trade-with-china-has-turned-into-giving-away-our-values-for-their-money/

“Trade With China Has Turned Into Giving Away Our Values For Their Money”

“Trade with China has been a factor in American capitalism since the birth of the republic, but only in the 21st century has it become a truly massive driver of American corporate wealth. But a funny thing happened on the way to the bank: The American influencer became the influenced. Trade is a two-way street that is meant to be mutually beneficial, but American trade with China has turned into a trade of our values for their money.

Corporations that we used to think of as American wear that allegiance very lightly these days, if at all. Their executives are happy to keep their headquarters here and live here. They love that our Constitution gives them and their owners secure property rights and that our taxation regime is not as onerous as some places and is fairly predictable. They love that our First Amendment gives them the right to advocate whatever cause is popular this week among their class of bien pensant elites.

But these leaders of woke capitalism aren’t so keen on extending those same rights to ordinary people. Their loyalty is to the dollar, not the flag. They outsource production to China, which is bad enough, but in doing so they sell out more than the individual workers whose factories they shutter. Importing Chinese goods and Chinese profits means importing the values of the Chinese Communist Party. On free speech, consumer protections, workers’ rights, the environment, and more, our open trade with China has rendered our laws null and replaced them with the dictates of a hostile, totalitarian state.

    Whatever You Say, Say Nothing
The most recent example of American business leaders kowtowing to Chinese Communist Party Chairman Xi Jinping is seen in the way the National Basketball Association cracked down on dissent from one of its employees. The situation is benign enough by American standards: Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted a message of support for the pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong — just another American praising democracy and peaceful protest.

But support for democracy is far from harmless in the eyes of the Chinese Communist Party. Word got back to the NBA that dissent from the party line was unacceptable for any corporation that wants to do business with them. Morey’s tweet disappeared, and the league issued a groveling apology.

It wasn’t quick enough, though. The Rockets have been a popular team in the People’s Republic since they drafted Chinese superstar Yao Ming in 2002, but those relationships soon crumbled under the weight of an uncensored thought. Some sources reported that the Rockets even considered firing Morey for his thoughtcrime. In China, the Rockets are already being cast down the memory hole.”

  5. Which leads to the obvious question….

    https://thefederalist.com/2019/10/14/what-do-u-s-companies-that-do-the-bidding-of-communist-china-owe-to-america/

“What Do U.S. Companies That Do The Bidding Of Communist China Owe To America?

The Hong Kong protesters are fighting for liberty, but major U.S. firms with business ties to China are siding with the authoritarian state. That’s not okay.”

    ——-

“Twitter and Facebook are the exceptions to a disturbing trend of U.S.-based companies bowing and scraping before the Chinese Communist Party. Witness the recent spectacle of the NBA censoring fans on American soil and shutting down questions from reporters asking players for comment on Hong Kong. It wasn’t enough to apologize for Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey’s tweet supporting the protesters. With billions invested in China, the NBA is apparently willing to import Beijing’s authoritarian methods to the United States.

Americans who love liberty—which is most of us, regardless of where we fall on the political spectrum—are appalled at this. The People’s Republic of China is an autocratic state under the pitiless rule of the Communist Party of China. It runs the world’s largest concentration-camp network, suppresses religious practice among Christians, Jews, and Muslims, runs a massive organ-harvesting operation among political prisoners and ethnic minorities, and is in the process of creating—with the help of U.S. technology firms—the largest surveillance state in human history.”

    Time to Rethink Corporate Welfare
That’s why the behavior of these companies is so jarring. They clearly don’t share the allegiances or principles of the vast majority of the American people. They are concerned with other things, namely, making billions in China.

One might argue, so what? Companies, especially global companies, are supposed to make money, not play politics. Their only allegiance, as some libertarians like to point out, is to their shareholders.

Okay, fine. If these companies don’t owe allegiance to America and its founding principles, maybe it’s time to rethink what the American people owe them. If Delta airlines is going to affirm PRC territorial claims and adjust its corporate policies to appease the Chinese state, then maybe it shouldn’t receive tax subsidies from state governments and local economic development authorities.

Maybe the monopoly Delta enjoys at its regional hubs in Atlanta, Detroit, and Minneapolis should be up for negotiation. Maybe we should rethink the billions in federal subsidies that go to every major U.S. airline that kowtows to communist China.

Same goes for Apple, and Disney, and all the global firms that do the PRC’s bidding. If Apple’s Tim Cook, who a few years ago publicly defended his decision not to help the FBI’s investigation of a terrorist attack on U.S. soil, is going to pull apps Hong Kong protestors use to defy the state, maybe it’s time to stop giving Apple millions in sales tax subsidies every year.

In other words, if these companies don’t owe any allegiance to America, why should America owe allegiance to them? There’s more to the life of a nation than its commerce, and some things really are worth fighting for. The struggle for freedom in Hong Kong is one of them. If these companies can’t bring themselves to cast their lots openly with America and the Chinese people against the tyranny of the Chinese Communist Party, then we owe them nothing but contempt.”

“Americans for Tax Reform today released a video compilation of the 17 times Elizabeth Warren has dodged the middle class tax question.

Warren has said on multiple occasions that she is “with Bernie” on Medicare for All, but refuses to answer if middle class taxes will go up under Medicare for All, as Bernie Sanders has openly admitted.

“Elizabeth Warren won’t admit the obvious. She will impose broad-based tax hikes on the middle class,” said Americans for Tax Reform president Grover Norquist.”

    https://www.foxnews.com/politics/republican-rep-matt-gaetz-kicked-out-of-impeachment-inquiry-hearing

“Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., an ardent supporter of President Trump, got the boot on Monday when he tried to sit in on the testimony of a former top National Security Council expert on Russia who was appearing on Capitol Hill as part of the House impeachment inquiry into the president.

Gaetz, who sits on the House Judiciary Committee, attempted to attend the testimony of Fiona Hill, a former deputy assistant to the president, but was told that because he was not a member of the House Intelligence Committee that he had to leave. The House Intelligence, Oversight and Foreign Affairs committees are conducting the impeachment inquiry into Trump.

A frustrated Gaetz aired his disappointment to reporters after being told he was not allowed to sit in on the hearing, venting his anger over what he says are “selective leaks” by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and questioning why he was not allowed to be present during Hill’s testimony. Gaetz added that the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y., was involved in the impeachment inquiry.

“It’s not like I’m on agriculture,” Gaetz said. “What are the Democrats so afraid of?””

  9. I see where Warren and Buttigieg have taken issue with Beto and his position on church taxation. But they made sure to add some caveats about LGBT discrimination being of paramount importance in all things.

It reminds me of President Obama’s insistence that he believed marriage was between a man and a woman — until it became culturally OK to publicly say otherwise and then he said he’d been suddenly, overnight, voila!, enlightened.

I suspect most of the Democrats, if not all, on the debate stage tonight agree with Beto’s original remarks (I see where he’s maybe qualifying it somewhat now) in their heart of hearts. They just know it’s (politically) a tad early to come out and say it right now. But soon, very soon — as soon as it’s perceived as safe, they’ll all fall in line.

Not that it’s something that would happen soon — or even necessarily could happen. But as Barr’s speech (in Michelle’s link) points out, we are now developing essentially a hardline, secularist religion, untempered by even a hint of mercy or grace, let alone liberty of thought, that requires its citizens to toe the line on cultural matters. It’s a new, very hard taskmaster.

“Former-FBI director James Comey has forged a lucrative second-act in media.
Comey was infamously fired by President Donald Trump in 2017, and in his new life he’s made it his mission to return the favor and drive Trump from power, according to The New York Times.
This new vocation happens to be well-suited for raking in piles of cash, including six-figure speaking fees, prestigious writing contracts, a TV series, and a multimillion dollar book deal.
A single speaking engagement can net Comey hundreds of thousands — more than his annual salary as FBI director. “Seriously, it’s crazy,” he said.”

“Trump is on his way to an easy win in 2020, according to Moody’s accurate election model”

“President Donald Trump will win reelection easily in 2020 if the economy holds up, modeling by Moody’s Analytics shows.

“If voters were to vote primarily on the basis of their pocketbooks, the president would steamroll the competition,” the report states.

Three models show Trump getting at least 289 electoral votes and as many as 351, assuming average turnout.

The Moody’s models have been backtested to 1980 and were correct each time — except in 2016, when it indicated Clinton would get a narrow victory.”

“What the argument for staying in Syria presupposes is that there was actually some US interest in our presence there in the first place. There wasn’t. There isn’t. Our entire presence there is part and parcel of the Obama administration’s sucking up to the Iranians and helping them create client states from Iraq and Syria. It put us in the position of allying ourselves with Iranian militias, with the Iranian IRGC, with Bashar Assad, with al Qaeda offshoots, and with the PKK (which is a US-designated terrorist group) and its YPG subsidiary to allegedly fight ISIS. Indeed, it has placed us in the position of not only being allies of a terrorist group, the PKK, but of the Kurdistan Regional Government, which opposes the YPG and has an economic boycott of the area under that group’s control.

Let’s stop here for a moment and try to answer why we were fighting ISIS? I’ve struggled with this for several years and the only answer I can come up with is that they are Iraqis and Syrians with subpar personal hygiene and a terrible tailor. The fact that ISIS was opposed by Iran and by al-Qaeda should have been our first hint that maybe we should be buying popcorn. ISIS is a millennialist movement that was doomed from the beginning to burn itself out because these movements always do. In the meantime, it was wreaking havoc with our enemies. There was no reason for us to collaborate with a terrorist organization that targets a NATO ally. For all the wailing about the loss of US prestige from us abandoning an “ally”–again, our only ally in this mess is Turkey who a lot of conservatives seem to want war declared upon by the same administration they were criticizing only last year for damaging NATO–by kicking PKK to the curb, that loss of prestige is dwarfed by the PR debacle we got from creating a set of circumstances that permitted the Turks and the Russians to honestly crank out reports about the US arming terrorists (both PKK and Syrian rebels, most of which are al-Qaeda affiliated). Just how, exactly, do we defend having US troops and the American flag present to honor members of a designated foreign terrorist organization who were killed by our NATO allies:”

“You can’t. There is literally no national interest of the United States that permits this much less requires it.

Bill Roggio, of Long War Journal, who has been immersed in the politics of the wars in Iraq and Syria for nearly two decades describes it this way.

@realDonaldTrump’s withdrawal from Syria is a big foreign policy mistake. The US is selling out yet another ally. But this was a mistake that predated Trump. US chose a poor ally. YPG is not the “poor Kurds” that the media makes it out to be. This is the PKK’s Syrian branch.

As I said above, I differ with many in that I think our foreign policy suffered much more by allying with terrorist groups than it will by us finally coming to our senses. But read on.

If you insist on pretending the YPG is not the PKK, here are photos of US Special Forces at a “YPG” funeral in 2017. Note the PKK and Oculan flags flying at the funeral, with US armored vehicles flying Old Glory in the background.

This is disgraceful. The PKK is a specially designated terrorist organization. The PKK is responsible for killing tens of thousands of Turks during a bloody civil war.

The US, under the advice and direction of @brett_mcgurk, chose the “YPG” (PKK) as its ally to fight the Islamic State. There was no consideration of Turkey’s very real national security interests and concerns.”

As HRW noted, within three or four days Cult HQ will forward you talking points explaining how Dear Leader’s actions were really brilliant, justified and necessary. If you use your brain or your moral compass in the early hours after a fiasco, you are going to wind up later contradicting yourself as we have seen here in the last couple of weeks.
