  1. I see Waldo, the bird, in the photo. Another great header for Wandering Viewers. Thanks, Jo!

It’s time for me to cook our morning eggs. I will have a cup of Rooibos tea. I have Bible study at church this a.m. so may get coffee there. More church activities later in the day, too.

  2. Good Morning Everyone. I feel guilty. This morning I went into the laundry room to get the dogs their breakfast. I didn’t have to hold my nose and I didn’t step on cat litter. I know Mr. P loved Mo.
Mo moved in with me a month before Mr. P and I got married because there was a hurricane coming and he lived on a river. She stayed. She didn’t like me. She spent several years disdaining me and in the last few tolerated me because she knew I could be the source of food if her “chosen” didn’t get it for her. It is funny to see how each animal has a “personality”.
The dogs are still subdued. Amos has decided to move himself in the position on top of Mr. P that had belonged to the cat. Of course when it is bedtime he wants to be as close to me as possible.

  3. Lovely and interesting shot!

Kim, you took care of her well for Mr. P, and no one could ask for more. I’d have been in trouble if my hubby had had a cat–in fact, if he had had two cats, and intended to keep them, he probably wouldn’t be my hubby. 🙂

  4. Morning. The void is loud in the house…it will be for a while. I miss her in the mornings the most…..she would always tell me which food bowl was hers 😞
The guys begin sanding this morning then staining this afternoon. He ran out of wood for the upstairs landing and bathroom and is scrambling to find some to match..ugh. He can still work on the stairs though…we shall see…he says he will be done Saturday…okie dokie 😊

  5. M,
Is seven hours a lot or a little?

Mary Anne and I are going to our Garden Club’s hot dog picnic. Has anyone ever heard of Onion Sauce? I am going now to make it.

  6. Chas won’t want any onion sauce.

I slept 8 hours and it was just right. Signed, Goldilocks. But PS: I could have slept for 9 — or 10 — and that would have been very nice, too.

Nancyjill, did your vet have any thoughts on what happened to Fly?

  7. I normally get to bed by eight thirty and get up around five. I was asleep at seven thirty and got up after six. Eight is good. Seven and a half is okay. Seven, I would be thinking of a nap.

  8. NancyJill, my thoughts and prayers are with you. A couple years ago our Buffy died unexpectedly, and the silence was indeed loud. All kinds of very predictable things weren’t happening — the click-click of his toenails on the kitchen floor when he heard me coming down the stairs in the morning, his appearance at my feet any time I opened the refrigerator cheese drawer, etc.

I too am curious if you ever found out a likely cause.

  9. I didn’t get enough sleep last night – couldn’t fall asleep for a long while, and then was awoken half an hour before I had to get up. Boy’s school only had half a day today so I have him for a few hours until Nightingale gets home from work, rather than the usual hour to hour-and-a-half after school.

He was good for me again this morning in getting out to the bus stop. The kids play a tag kind of game for a bit before the bus comes, which he enjoys.

Back at home, in the kitchen, Heidi moved towards him just as Boy was swinging his foot forward, and his foot and her chin met kind of forcefully, causing Heidi to cry out. I don’t see damage, but it must have hurt, because she whimpered a bit after the initial yelp. A few days ago, Janie bit her ear, drawing blood. It was actually a relief to see it was only her ear, because I initially saw the blood on her neck. With these recent incidences, no wonder she’s been sticking close to me.

  10. A couple days ago on a local Facebook page, someone had found a keychain with keys, and asked did anyone “loose” their keys. (I’m sure most of you have seen how common it is for people to use “loose” instead of “lose”.)

Part of me wanted to comment something like, “Apparently they didn’t have a tight grip on them.” (Get it? Loose – tight.) But I knew that many wouldn’t catch the humor, and those who did could think I was picking on the one who posted, and I didn’t want that. So I refrained. But I did amuse myself in the thought.

  11. Poor Heidi. 😦 Tess will still “herd” Annie into kitchen corners, but no one’s ever been hurt, I don’t think Tess makes actual contact or it she does it’s more of a push-down with her face. The cat has learned this is just part of living here and I’ve never seen her strike back, she just endures until I spot it and call Tess off (and Tess immediately obeys). It’s mostly related to food and to “dinner” (breakfast) time (I only feed the dogs once a day now), so I don’t think it happens when I’m not around.

It feels like fall here, at last, with just that “something” in the air. The rest of the year will fly by now, of course.

I may go into the office again this afternoon, it actually was kind of a nice change of pace yesterday. I’ve lined up some phone calls for the afternoon, so that would work out well, too (although you have to “time” the phone calls in our cubby, depending on how many people are in there at one time — yesterday was a full house, with 3 of us — and who else sitting right next to you (and we’re all right next to each other) might be on the phone. Two people talking on the phone at one time doesn’t work at all in those tiny spaces, so then someone has to get up and move out to the lobby or another spot.

  12. I see it’s a busy day in politics, with the impeachment being the latest drama.

Our LA city councilman today will ask the city to pass a resolution asking the governor to declare a state of emergency for homelessness. Another reporter from our paper closer to downtown is covering the meeting.

And our town is gearing up to celebrate a new “little italy” section near the waterfront with a big outdoor party on Oct. 5 featuring the italian guy from Criminal Minds as one of the special guests. But as with everything, there’s drama and disagreement surrounding it all, I’m trying to sort it all out.

  13. Mumsee, I also have more baby stuff than I did when I had my own personal baby. So far he hasn’t mentioned the Minnie Mouse toddler bed again. Who uses a toddler bed anyway? I don’t see where we should change anything. She and Papa sleep in the king sized bed and Amos and I sleep in the queen sized bed. Amos doesn’t kick nor snore. It’s only one night a week.

  14. DJ – By the Italian guy on “Criminal “Minds”, do you mean Joe Mantegna? 🙂

Our town had its 300th Birthday celebration over the weekend with various events. One was a race at the Stafford Speedway between a horse and a car. The horse won! (Well, the car was a very old antique, not one of today’s cars.)

  15. My Vet called me and left a message this afternoon. He said the sudden onset and no prior symptoms would indicate to him perhaps a circulatory issue focusing on the heart. If she had had a cancer, a disease or such she would have manifested symptoms early and not so suddenly leading to her quick death.. I don’t know why but he said without seeing her he would suspect the heart. He did say it was “weird” though because what we saw happening really doesn’t give us many clues. She has always been healthy and had just been in there in the Spring for her annual exam and shots. We always knew she was prone to issues having a very sensitive tummy. It was not unusual for her to throw up and want to eat grass. We have sprinkled flora and pro biotic powder on her food from time to time when she seemed unsettled…we got those packets from our Vet but she hasn’t had to have that for some time.

  16. So sad.
There is a tree on the right of the picture, but I think everything else is the tall grass that we have here. It can be 7 feet tall and that is why they burn it.

  17. Have any of you heard of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (aka “EEE” or “Triple E”)? It is a concern in our area. EEE is a pretty serious disease, spread by mosquitoes. Since there have been a couple deaths, schools are cancelling evening outside activities, or moving them to earlier times.

Boy’s football practice is being moved to an hour earlier. A Cub Scout bonfire get together was cancelled.

    From Wikipedia:

“The virus can progress either systematically or encephalitically, depending on the person’s age. Encephalitic disease involves swelling of the brain and can be asymptomatic, while the systemic illness occurs very abruptly. Those with the systemic illness usually recover within 1–2 weeks. While the encephalitis is more common among infants, in adults and children, it usually manifests after experiencing the systemic illness.[2] Symptoms include high fever, muscle pain, altered mental status, headache, meningeal irritation, photophobia, and seizures, which occur 3–10 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. Due to the virus’s effect on the brain, patients who survive can be left with mental and physical impairments, such as personality disorders, paralysis, seizures, and intellectual impairment.”

And yes, Kizzie, that would be Joe whats-his-name, I couldn’t begin to remember how to spell it when I first posted that. 🙂

Spent 90 minutes on the phone today with a guy who used to work for my old paper before I did, he was hired right out of high school. He’s one of “those” guys, he’ll talk forever, but also is known for spreading tales about our politicians and other community leaders. He may have some good (real) news tips mixed in with it, and I try to listen for this, but it’s hard to ferret out and much of it simply can’t be confirmed.

Anyway, he’s called a few times in the past several months but I hesitate to pick up as I know I’ll be stuck forever. But today I figured I had to return the latest call because it had been so long. I figure now I’m set for the next year or so.

  19. I spotted another coyote crossing the street — about half a block ahead of us — tonight while I was walking the dogs. We stopped, he stopped. We stared at each other for a while, then he scooted onto the sidewalk, but then came back into the street.

At that point I decided we should slowly turn around and head back the other way. Time for a route change. Don’t want to invade or get too close to anyone’s “territory.”

    +++++++++++++++

A post on one of our FB community crime pages today (with over 250 comments and growing) detailed a problem one of our local grocery stores is having with kids from the nearby middle school after school lets out. There’s a group that comes into the store and yells at “old” people, “white” people (I guess calling them old and white with much choice language); they shove people and hijack some of the small kids’ sized grocery carts and race each other down the aisles, pushing and throwing things off the shelves.

The store manager has called the school several times, but no one seems to be able to do anything. As one of my editors told me, “I’d read that story.” I sent it to our local crime reporter.
