BreakPoint: Kavanaugh, Ford, and Everyone Else
    No Mere Mortals

C.S. Lewis, “The Weight of Glory”:

“… it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all of our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations – these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit….”

Or to put it another way, every human being is made in the image of God, made for eternity. Our causes, our ideologies, our governments—they aren’t eternal. That’s why it is always morally hideous whenever anyone is sacrificed on the altar of a political ideology, for a political party, or for power and control.

… Our politics is dehumanizing, cynical, and degraded right now. And we may never know any more about these allegations than we do right now. And so, in this context, as broken as it is, here’s what Christians can do. First, we can pray that God would allow the truth to come out. We can pray that the victims of this gross episode in our history would be healed, and that ultimately God would use His church to heal the nation.

But finally, Christians have to commit to never sacrifice a human person—ever—on the altar of political ideology. Not even if they’re judicial nominees or political opponents. …

  3. As someone said yesterday, the hearing and our responses to it were something of a political Rorschach test, no?

Few minds were changed — and the various analysis pieces certainly reflect which “side” the writer supported going into it all. I still haven’t seen a fair account of both testimonies, acknowledging strong and weak points both displayed by the two main actors.

    Sigh.

Sorry to see the state of our divided culture and nation. How do we govern ourselves going forward? Serious question.

  4. Ricky,

Oh for goodness sakes. When all is said and done, Cruz will win by 10% and then Beto, like abortion Barbie before him, can quietly go back to obscurity.

So stop clutching your pearls already. Beto is, as the song and saying goes, all hat and no cattle.

Besides, you’re too old to play the boy who cried wolf.

    http://thefederalist.com/2018/09/27/the-hype-over-beto-orourke-is-unwarranted-conservatives-shouldnt-worry-about-him/

“Beto O’Rourke Is The Texas Sequel To Georgia Failure Jon Ossoff

Despite myriad fawning media profiles, Texas Senate candidate Beto O’Rourke is yet another member of the progressive herd with no new ideas, no personality, and minimal experience.

In the real world, where two parties actively compete against one another in Texas, a state with a future, O’Rourke is the real future of the Democratic Party. His image is of a friendly, decently handsome (for a politician, anyway), somewhat young candidate with the common touch. But in reality, he is yet another member of the progressive herd with no new ideas, no personality, and minimal experience. The most interesting things about him are his DUI and time with a punk rock band. But that won’t stop the press and fellow Democrats from lionizing him and deigning him the next Kennedy or Obama.

If this sounds familiar, it’s because it is. O’Rourke is the Texan sequel to the Georgian Democrat Jon Ossoff who lost spectacularly in Georgia’s congressional election last year. The two men even look the same! More importantly, O’Rourke receives the majority of his funding from outside of Texas—although he likes to brag that he runs a true grassroots campaign (maybe if the grass is Californian or New Yorker). He is accordingly hyped to the moon, with conservatives and liberals alike mentioning his irresistible charisma, what with all the money he’s able to raise.

Unfortunately for O’Rourke, the laws of political gravity still work in Texas. Anyone who feared his rise should take solace in last Friday’s debate, where the real man came into focus. Instead of the “rock star” everyone was expecting, what people saw was another Democrat serving up another tasteless helping of boilerplate. While it remains to be seen what will happen in November, it is clear from the O’Rourke-Cruz debate that media-fabricated charisma is no match for experience, superior arguments, and a successful record.”

“See that boy standing there by the dance floor
He’s lookin’ like the Marlboro Man
Starched shirt, starched jeans, big trophy buckle
    And an empty Copenhagen can
He’s talkin’ cowboy this and cowboy that
Well I’ll bet one thing’s for sure
The only stampede that he’s ever seen
Is the clearance at the western store

All hat and no cattle, that boy just ain’t real
All boots and no saddle, don’t know how to make a cowgirl feel
Think I’m gonna tell him to pack up his act
And go back where he came from
‘Cause all hat and no cattle ain’t gonna get it done

    He’s just a smooth-talkin’, long-tall slow-walkin’
    Drugstore-made-up dude
So honey don’t you fall for that fake Texas drawl
    He ain’t right for you
What you need’s a man that ain’t just a hat stand
    When you get him home
Well, I don’t look like much, but I can sure saddle up
And ride with you all night long

All hat and no cattle, that boy just ain’t real
All boots and no saddle, don’t know how to make a cowgirl feel
Think I’m gonna tell him to pack up his act
And go back where he came from
‘Cause all hat and no cattle ain’t gonna get it done
All hat and no cattle ain’t gonna get it done”

  5. CNN was on in the newsroom and I was dismayed at the very one-sided analysis offered there throughout the day.

I gave another (20-something) reporter from our sister paper a ride home yesterday and she said everyone in their newsroom was on the same ‘side’ (hers) and were very expressive as they watched the hearing (only a couple folks in my newsroom and comments, all liberal, I stayed silent, were at least kept to a minimum). I felt obligated to share with her my “old school” journalism rule — leave your politics at the door of the newsroom when you come to work. It’s a personal discipline that so many journalists have lost sight of, being able to be dispassionate and stepping back as an observer, truly listening and ‘hearing’ both sides, not getting caught up in the partisan ‘political armies.’

Not sure she heard or appreciated any of that, but I try to just pass it on to any young reporter who will listen … We’ve got to go back to that as journalists. We’ve all become too close to becoming active participants in these debates.

  6. So committee vote today, vote to start debate Saturday, vote to end debate on Monday, vote to confirm Kavanaugh Tuesday. Sounds like a plan.

And here’s further proof that truth was never the goal from Democrats.

    http://dailycaller.com/2018/09/27/dems-demand-fbi-gop-proves-they-didnt-investigate/

“Senator Thom Tillis went after Senate Judiciary Democrats for refusing to participate in the Republicans’ investigation in the allegations of sexual misconduct levied against Brett Kavanaugh during his testimony in front of the committee on Thursday.

“We were moving heaven and Earth and even moving the schedule to get to the truth. We are doing an investigation. We’re doing our best. I hope that the American people who are watching this will go out to the Senate judiciary website and take a look at this chronology. Take a look at the lack of investigation on the part of the people who want the investigation, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. Every opportunity you have to go and question a witness, every opportunity that we’ve had to find more truth and to find more facts, we have done it. It’s documented. We’ve got sworn statements. We are doing our job, we’re doing the committee work.”

  8. Sounds like Murphy Brown’s revival is going down in flames. I didn’t watch it this week (but then I never watched the original series either). I was pretty sure this is what it would amount to, though.

    From Deadline Hollywood:

‘Murphy Brown’ Review: Candice Bergen-Led CBS Revival Is Yesterday’s News

… The revival of the Diane English-created series (returning more than two decades after its last season ended) has pretty much reduced itself to a one-note Don Quixote from what I’ve seen. With surprisingly tone-deaf digs at the likes of Sarah Huckabee Sanders and Steve Bannon misfires, it is a pursuit in which the Trump White House is the constantly charged windmill to the deafening exclusion of all else….

… no matter who that special secret guest is (bets = Hilary Clinton), … this new and slightly extended Murphy Brown is so caught up in being topically anti-Trump that it will surely be yesterday’s news before the end of the night. …

Yawn. I was curious to watch the new drama “FBI” this week, but turned it off as soon as it was clear that the evil villain was …. gasp! …. a conservative.

Really? That’s the old Law & Order familiar plot line — extra points if the villain also is a smarmy evangelical minister (and both shows are produced by the same folks so probably not a big surprise here).

    Just. getting. old.

  10. And speaking of ouch….

    https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2018/09/postkavanaugh_democrats_will_reap_the_whirlwind.html

“The hearing yesterday was a shameful exercise in abuse, unspeakable abuse by Democrats, of both Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh. Blasey Ford did show up and testify, her two Democrat activist lawyers, Debra Katz and Michael Bromwich, by her side. She was not credible, but we should all feel sorry for her.

She is fifty-two years old but seemed childlike. She speaks in a child’s voice, which rose in pitch at the end of every sentence as though she is unsure about the validity of her own words. She was at times cheerful and giddy, which was off-putting, given the reason she was there: to shatter a fine man’s life’s work. She has traveled the world but had told the committee she was afraid to fly. So she is not an honest person. But she is clearly damaged, and those lawyers and whoever recruited them should be indicted for cruelty to an unstable person. Her lawyers and Dianne Feinstein have abused her horribly and used her as their tool to ruin Kavanaugh.

The Democrats on the Judiciary Committee revealed their inner selves yesterday, and it was an ugly, ugly picture. Every one of them attacked, demeaned, and verbally assaulted Judge Kavanaugh. Not one of them was civil or respectful to this man, who has led a life of high achievement, service, grace, and class. Booker, Harris, Durbin, Blumenthal, et al. are thugs. They are bullies in search of power with no regard for the truth or decency. No one should ever again vote for any of them. Every one of them has permanently stained their committee and the confirmation process. They have also forever destroyed their own legacies. Their performances today are what each of them will be remembered for.

Ford’s original letter to Feinstein is so badly written that it is hard to believe it was drafted by an educated person. Dr. Ford did not know the word “exculpatory” but has a Ph.D. Ford seemed as though she was in a dissociative state. She was reciting a studied script, blanks and all, as though she had been hypnotized. She had no reasonable explanation for why each of the witnesses she named denies ever being at such a party. She did not address the fact that one of them, her girlfriend, made a statement under oath that she had never met Kavanaugh and remembered no such gathering. The Democrats in the room badgered Kavanaugh relentlessly but ignored the fact that there is still no corroborating evidence, no witnesses, no proof that the incident ever happened. There is only this sad woman’s distant, incomplete, and flawed memory. The Democrats don’t care. All they care about is keeping that seat vacant.

When asked who paid for her polygraph and who was paying her lawyers, Ford said she did not know. She said she thought there were some GoFundMe pages, but she had no idea how to manage them. She said she did not know that Sen. Grassley had offered to come to California to interview her. Her head must have been in the sand. Most likely, her lawyers wanted the spectacle we saw. They have been certain they could force Kavanaugh to withdraw. They badly misjudged the man they have tried to destroy. Kavanaugh rightly eviscerated them. It was his testimony that was truly heart-wrenching. It is likely that the millions of those who watched cried more than the judge did.”

    https://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2018/09/lady_liberty_nikki_haley_thrills_venezuelas_battered_democrats_in_the_streets_of_new_york.html

“Jumping down into the streets of New York with the crowds of protesters, U.S. United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley seized the moment with a megaphone, calling for democracy in Venezuela, just as Russia’s Boris Yeltsin once did in the 1991 coup that overturned the Soviet Union.

Don’t think Venezuelans weren’t thrilled. These are Venezuela’s beleaguered democrats, the ones who have been beaten, jailed, starved, and murdered as their elections were stolen from them in front of their faces. They were utterly, utterly thrilled, and not just in the streets of New York, but across the continent and deep inside Venezuela itself.”

  13. Elsewhere, I have read that “boof” refers to anal sex and “Devil’s Triangle” refers to two men and one woman having sex, and that is how they were understood in the 80s.

It is entirely possible that Kavanaugh and Judge didn’t engage in either of those activities, but were merely immature teen boys trying to sound more experienced than they were.

  14. So, I made that point (that they were probably just immature teenage boys trying to sound more experienced than they were) to a Facebook friend. His reply was that if that is the case, Kavanaugh committed perjury by giving false explanation of what the words meant. 😦

  15. From CNN:

    JUST IN:

    * The Senate Judiciary Committee just voted to send the Brett Kavanaugh nomination to the floor — under one condition: Flake will only support it after a brief FBI investigation.

    * What comes next? Quite frankly, we don’t know. This appears unprecedented. The senators are discussing that now.

    * Earlier: Democrats, a few Republican governors and the American Bar Association urged the committee to halt the vote until an FBI investigation.

So much for him being a “principled” and decent man. He’s also clueless if he thinks the FBI will do anything different than what R’s already did, which is interview and take statements. They already have, and they have sworn statements already. There’s no crime anywhere, and anything there may have been the statue of limitations has already passed on.

Flake is being a wuss who won’t stand up to the Dem bullies and RINOs. This is also why he can’t get re-elected.

  17. The FBI can interview the prosecutor used to question her as well. She also sides with Kavanaugh.

There’s no there, there. Everyone knows this. It’s just more stall tactics by the usual frauds.

    http://dailycaller.com/2018/09/28/rachel-mitchell-not-prosecute-kavanaugh-blasey-ford/

“The sex crimes prosecutor tasked with questioning Christine Blasey Ford during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on Judge Brett Kavanaugh told Republican senators on Thursday that Ford’s claims and the lack of corroborative evidence were not strong enough to take the case to a courtroom.

Arizona prosecutor Rachel Mitchell spoke at a late-night Thursday meeting with the Republican caucus, where she briefed all 51 GOP members, according to The Washington Post. Based on the evidence presented during the hearing, Mitchell reportedly said that she would not have prosecuted Kavanaugh.

“Mitchell spelled it out and was clear with senators that she could not take this anywhere near a courtroom,” a source told Fox News. In fact, Mitchell reportedly said she would not even pursue a search warrant.

The prosecutor’s guidance may be especially important for Republican senators who have yet to make a decision on how to vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court.”
