Matthew 27:32-56 NIV

The Crucifixion of Jesus

32 As they were going out, they met a man from Cyrene, named Simon, and they forced him to carry the cross. 33 They came to a place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). 34 There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. 35 When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they kept watch over him there.37 Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is jesus, the king of the jews.
38 Two rebels were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. 39 Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!” 41 In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. 42 “He saved others,” they said, “but he can’t save himself! He’s the king of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. 43 He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 In the same way the rebels who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The Death of Jesus

45 From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. 46 About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”).
47 When some of those standing there heard this, they said, “He’s calling Elijah.”
48 Immediately one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with wine vinegar, put it on a staff, and offered it to Jesus to drink. 49 The rest said, “Now leave him alone. Let’s see if Elijah comes to save him.”
50 And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.
51 At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook, the rocks split 52 and the tombs broke open. The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. 53 They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
54 When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, “Surely he was the Son of God!”
55 Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee to care for his needs. 56 Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph, and the mother of Zebedee’s sons.

    The mother of James and John.
    But Matthew says “mother of Zebedee’s sons”..
    And the only thing we know of Zebedee was that he had two sons, James and josh.
    But Zebedee must have been important in some way because of the way James and John are identified.

    My friend Lee was able to sit up for a little while last night. She was very thirsty but they would only let her get water from a sponge.

    Michelle posted last night about the baby being so small. I know a miracle can happen there. All I can think is that “Jesus loves the little children…..”

  4. I too was wondering what happened to those who came back to life. Did they continue to live as before and die again, or did their bodies just disappear….?

  7. I also have wondered about Matt. 27:52-52. They rose and appeared to many. Then what?
    Who were they and why were they selected?
    Evidently they went to heaven. They certainly didn’t die again.
    But I pass that by as one of the things I don’t understand.
    As for Munsee’s “Hi dear, I’m home” Can you imagine the trouble that might cause?

  8. Michelle, from yesterday’s (and previous) prayer thread(s), prayers for you and yours as you wait on the Lord with His will in your precious unborn grandbaby’s life. Last night I printed out your prayer requests this week and gave the copy to my best friend, at Maundy Thursday services last night. We prayed for you all regularly in her Bible studies during the October events, and she told me she will be praying for J and A and all of you in this, too. (And I know she will — probably already has.)

    Cheryl, Kim, all others with recent prayer requests, I’m with you in prayer, as well.

  9. Update on my mom: her collarbone is showing signs of healing, and she is comfortable enough to sleep in her own bed again, not the recliner in the living room. Thank you for the many prayers for her.

    I know this drama is encompassing me, but if you think of it, my son is really hurting. (He’s the most like me among this family of rational engineers, the most sensitive of us all. His wife, BTW, is an engineer). He’s desperately needed at work, he’s the set up and running all the sound for the outdoor Easter services at his Hope Chapel this weekend (where he’s an elder). The strain is very hard on him.

  12. I’d like to request prayer for myself. I experienced unusual and copious amounts of oral bleeding this morning. I’m not sure what is going on, but it stopped relatively quickly. Shocking amounts of blood, though, which was concerning.

    I’ve also seemed to have lost a significant amount of my sense of smell over I’m not sure what period — maybe several months. One day recently when I was outside, I tried breathing in deeply through my nose to take in those lovely spring smells I notice every year, but I could hardly smell anything. I’m not sure if that’s related to the persistent scab or something I’ve got inside one nostril, which never seems to heal. Sometimes it gets itchy, but I get a nosebleed from that side if I don’t resist the urge to rub my nose to relieve the itch.

    I should maybe use our emergency fund to get this checked out, as a lot of our medical care monies are going to my husband’s hip problem lately.

  15. 6 Arrows, as a result of a viral infection last year, one of my cousins developed idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, a condition where your own immune cells attack a destroy your platelets, the cells that produce clotting. His first indication that there was something wrong was him starting to bleed from his orifices (eye, nose, mouth, etc.) and when they examined him, they found he had almost no platelets left (he survived, although he is still not very well). If the bleeding was not stopping and copious, that could indicate that your platelet count is very low. You should get checked out as soon as possible – if your platelet count is low, then any kind of otherwise mild trauma, like a bump on the head or body, could result in internal bleeding.

  16. On the resurrection of the people, I have always thought it was the Old Testament faithful – whose graves are still in Israel – because the passage said:

    And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,
    And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.(Matthew 27:52-54)

    Notice, they did not appear until after Christ’s resurrection. I do not think they were translated into heaven afterward. They probably just returned to their graves and went back to their sleep. After all, Lazarus was not raised in eternal resurrection, nor was Jairus’ daughter, or the widow at Nain’s son – or the boys Elijah and Elisha raised, or Dorcas whom Peter raised or the young man who fell out of the window whom Paul raised. They all would die again. Christ is the firstfruits of the Resurrection, and the rest of us wait for his Second Coming:

    But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming. (I Corinthians 15:23)
    For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. (I Thessalonians 4:16-17)

    You know what I just thought of this afternoon? Yesterday my daughter made a delicious new meal with homemade pepperoni pasta sauce, including lots of garlic and onion — two foods with blood-thinning properties. I’ll admit I had seconds (and maybe thirds?), it was so good.

    I suspect that larger quantity of blood-thinning foods I don’t consume regularly may have triggered much worse bleeding than the small amount I usually get when brushing my teeth.

    I am still keeping my appointment, though, as finding out my CBC will be useful information, even if what happened this morning was just a temporary reaction to my diet yesterday.

  20. Michelle, Earlier this year our Pastor and his wife lost a baby six months in the womb. I never said this to anyone, but at the time, I realized that such an event is probably extra hard on the Dad because he’s not only grieving for the lost child, but also for his wife in her sorrow.

  21. Onions. There. I mentioned them too.

    Prayer for my friend E who is going through some kind of medical concern — she seems not ready to talk about it yet with me, which is fine. But she’s going to the doctor frequently now, says the Lord’s got it. It sounds like something serious to me and I’ve been worried.

    Pray I get better at saying no to Carol. She asked if I could come visit this weekend, I said either Friday or Saturday. She just called and I said tomorrow, Saturday will be better. She begged me to come today instead so I’m trying to scramble to do that. Not a huge deal, and it frees tomorrow up for possible seeing E for a meal out. But still … She also wants Easter candy and a basket. I picked some candy up earlier this week thinking she’d be expecting that, so I’ll bring that to her. Not sure about a full basket. I love Carol, but she’s so demanding sometimes and I feel like the entire burden for helping her has fallen on me. Wish there were just another couple people looking in on her as well.

    At least she managed to get her cell phone back up and working with no financial help from anyone this time, hallelujah.

  22. 6 Arrows – Do you see a dentist at least somewhat regularly? I ask because you mention that you usually have some bleeding when you brush your teeth. If you don’t already floss, trying to floss somewhat regularly can help that. Hubby would start to get a little blood if he hadn’t flossed for a while.

    I know there was a report within the last year or two that flossing is not necessary, but for some people, it is. I am one of them.

  23. 6 Arrows, eating garlic should not affect someone with a healthy platelet count or normal ability to form clots. I would say that if your gums are bleeding just from brushing, that could indicate you have some problems with a lack of platelets or clotting factors. My gums will bleed a little sometimes with flossing, but never with brushing. A CBC will show low platelets, but if it is not the platelets, it could be some other stage in the clotting factor (there are multiple stages and other chemicals involved in forming clots – blood thinner medications, for example, do not target platelets, but other clotting factors).

Kizzie, last year my dentist increased the frequency of my dental cleanings to every four months, rather than the usual every six months, and since then, my gums have been looking much healthier and were bleeding less during exams and flossing. I’ve always been a faithful flosser (every day, and for a number of years, after every meal, by my own choice, though now I only do it once a day), and the practitioner I saw this afternoon at the clinic said I have very healthy-looking gums.

    Roscuro, and anyone else interested in knowing, in addition to the CBC I got today, they also did a CMP (something metabolic something — complete metabolic panel, maybe?). She also mentioned another test they might do in the future, IR something? (Depending on the results from the tests today, which should be in early next week.)

    She also says there’s some sort of polyp in my left nostril that can be removed and tested, but we didn’t do that today.

    Thanks for the prayers. And this may seem little, but my arm is awfully sore from the blood draw today, something that’s never happened before. I don’t know if the tech didn’t get the needle in the right place, but after the initial stick, after which (stop reading here, anyone who is squeamish) the pain ends, I felt a lot of pressure during the whole blood draw, and my arm now hurts like, well, never mind. I put an ice pack on it when I got home, and want to have it on longer, but have to get ready for church now.

Of course, Carol’s been purchasing e-books and now has 28 cents left in her account 🙂 But she needs the distraction, she may be in that place for a while — and the administrator at her Hollywood residence appears to have convinced her to stay there, which I think is best. So plan is that she’ll return there when she’s released from this rehab/nursing home. (I’ve been in much worse, but it’s always hard to be in those places as a patient, I can imagine. She does have a bed near the window but it looks out on the freeway.

  33. She knows how, she just, well, she just — just does what she does. Plus I think her LA city library account is on questionable status. She managed to get the 30+ books returned that she’d had for at year or so, but hasn’t connected with them about her borrowing status.

  34. The 30 some books were finally turned over to a collection agency. Now that the books have been returned (they were in storage at her residence during a period when she was frequently hospitalized, etc.) so they may have forgiven the debt, but I don’t know. It was over $1,000.

    I’ve told her to restrict herself to e-borrowing,’ but for some reason she never could. She loved going to the library branch on Ivar and wandering through the aisles, picking out actual *books* to take home (and they let you take out way too many nowadays, in my opinion).

    Being schizophrenic, Carol simply doesn’t *think* like the rest of us, trust me. She knows all about these options, is very tech-savvy, but she does what she does.
