Prayer Requests 5-4-17

It’s Thursday, so don’t forget to pray for Jo, her students, and the people of PNG.

Anyone else?

Psalm 61

Hear my cry, O God;
    listen to my prayer.

From the ends of the earth I call to you,
    I call as my heart grows faint;
    lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For you have been my refuge,
    a strong tower against the foe.

I long to dwell in your tent forever
    and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.
For you, God, have heard my vows;
    you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.

Increase the days of the king’s life,
    his years for many generations.
May he be enthroned in God’s presence forever;
    appoint your love and faithfulness to protect him.

Then I will ever sing in praise of your name
    and fulfill my vows day after day.

  1. It’s the National Day of Prayer. Are you planning to attend an event? I hope to go to an event late today at the church my church is considering merging with.

  2. I remember covering a couple of those when they were so popular in the 1990s. I think the local churches today are gathering on the Iowa for the event.

  3. 😦 Kim — sounds like such a difficult time, I’m sorry.

    I’m going ‘tough love’ on Carol, meanwhile. She finally, ahem, “suggested” I “might” want to buy her the Jitterbug smart phone as it’s 50% off — for her birthday which is still a month away.

    I haven’t had a chance to call her since the weekend so will call her today or tonight and, if it comes up again, I’ll try to (with grace) explain that no, I won’t be buying her that phone (A-it would be so temporary for her as that brand of phone won’t satisfy her desire for something much higher-tech, she’d replace it as soon as she could; and B-well, just no, not going there again); I’ll suggest (if I can do so without sounding angry, which I can easily slip into) that it’s important that she learn some responsibility for her things, if possible.

    This latest snafu with her phone was completely avoidable. She changed her pass code to something so complicated she couldn’t remember it (and didn’t write down a hint somewhere?); had she had her Access ride card in place (card has been “lost” for months, she just needs to pay the $15 to replace it), and some money for transportation, she easily could have paid the $10 fee for a door-to-door ride to the corporate office to get the phone up and running again.

    It’s just not fair that these decisions she makes are always coming down on people around her to make up for the lapses she just needs to learn to plan for (she owes her former roommate $28 this month, a lot more than she usually borrows from her — and that’s become a monthly routine, she essentially is counting the borrowed money from her as part of her monthly “income;” at least she does appear to be paying her back each month, so far anyway).

    Anyway, prayers that the conversation goes OK, that she’ll be open to at least trying to change in this area (it won’t be easy and she’ll fail and falter, but she can at least be *trying*).

  4. Kim, he is protecting his woman, who refuses to defend herself. The case of the abused woman going back for more? Your daughter is abusing you. She does not want your help to get clean, she wants your help to support her habit. Let her find her own way for a while. She knows you love her and if she decides to get straightened out, you will be there for her. Yes, it is sad to see them take the wrong path. But they get to choose.

    Eighteen year old got home the other day from a trip to Boise with his bio sister and bio brother (the sis is one of ours and the bro was for a few months until he opted out), to visit other bio sister (the one you spent time with) and a bio half sister. He was disgusted. They did not get much time with half sister, and the time with the others was profanity/obscenity laced. He uses it a bit, though not around me. And they were over the top. All of the time. They went to Applebys and he was embarrassed to be seen with them as they loudly and obnoxiously gave their profane opinions on everything. I told him that was the reason I stopped with FB, not interested in seeing that side of them. Would you have thought that of them when you met them? But they have to go their way and figure out who they are. I don’t have to put up with it. I explained to son that he does not need to either. He could have walked out. He has told them in the past that he does not like it, they don’t care. It saddens me, but they will have to decide and I don’t have the energy to carry them and still take care of what is before me. Same as our bio children. Some of them went through some times I did not like but they all seem to have come out okay on the other side. Give it time and keep your focus on God and your husband.

  5. Kim: I’m so sorry re: BG and all the pain you’re feeling. As I said the other day, dealing with young adults is not easy. I wish I knew what to say–words that could act like a healing balm on your wounded heart–but all I can offer is my continued prayers and heartfelt sympathy.

  6. Called Carol who is waiting for the nurse to come see her in her room, she’s got the low-potassium symptoms again. And she was a little cranky, upset that I wasn’t going to come see her this week but I tried to explain that this garage project was way more than I’d anticipated and I need a few days’ just to chill before I have to head back to work.

    She wants to move out of there again but I told her she’s pretty much stuck there for now. Grumble grumble.

  7. It is the first year in many that we did not attend a National Day of Prayer event. I forgot this was it. We have been gone a lot, but were in church last Sunday. Usually I know far ahead, but I have not had Christian radio on as much and our church had no notice. I am not sure if that is because we have a new pastor or what.

    Our church did join with several others to have a 72 hour bible reading event. There were fifteen minute slots around the clock to read the bible out loud and all the way through. It was held in a tent because of the weather. It is the second year, but was in a new place. That started on Monday. My husband and I volunteered for a couple of slots.

  8. I went to two prayer breakfasts in Chicago. They were enlightening (in seeing what culture thinks about religion), but nothing close to spiritually edifying. I got free tickets because of my work on yearbook, so I went for the cultural experience–the only times I was able to be in the room with Mayor Daley and others of his sort. The first year I was surprised at how naturally everyone said “Judeo-Christian” as though somehow they were a single religion, and the second year I was even more surprised to hear “Judeo-Christian Muslim.” That was in the 1990s, and I don’t even want to know how long the string is now.

    Since those two events, I’m happy enough to let politicians do politics, but let the church and Christian families deal with prayer.

  9. I dunno (Michelle) but she is a sister in Christ and I try to lean on grace rather than judgment; finding the balance, I confess, isn’t always easy and I don’t always figure it out too well. 😦
