We stopped at Stanford to see Paul and Linda. Paul had another surgery yesterday morning and was not available, “too loopy,” Linda said.
We sat outside in the beautiful sunshine beside a fountain and she told us the story. BTW, he has now had both hands amputated to the wrists, both feet removed and has developed blood clots. Because of his heart transplant and the lymphoma I hadn’t heard about related to whatever his actual condition is, he cannot take blood thinners. They’re just waiting and watching.
Until yesterday, the 61 year old retired helicopter pilot had been upbeat and working hard at whatever he was asked to do. “But today he looked and sounded melancholy,” Linda said. And then said no more about it.
She is magnificent. “He basically can’t do anything.” She feeds him, reads him email, letters, talks with him, stands up for him, supervises discussions of him and sits beside him all day long. She quit her job the day after he went to Stanford this time, 6 weeks ago, and has been there every since. Her brother lives 30 minutes away, so she stays with them.
Please keep these two in your prayers. Paul had a knee replacement and was recovering well. 6 weeks ago, the Saturday was gorgeous, and they went on a bike ride with a group of hard core bike riders here in Sonoma County (we have a lot of them). I’m not sure how far he went, 10 miles?, but he started to feel ill.
When Linda took him to the local ER the next morning, a Catholic hospital, the ER doc asked her if he had advanced medical directives, “your husband is extremely ill.” She told them he was a fighter, Stanford got involved and a helicopter flew up to transport him down. They’ve been there ever since.
I said very little. R sat and prayed. She talked for half an hour. After we said goodbye, I went to a mobile coffee bar that sits on the plaza providing drinks. While I waited for my smoothie, the people standing around chatted about why they were there.
After I gave a brief description of our friend’s situation to the barista, he said, “You have no idea how much that visit meant to your friend. We are here all day long, watching the people come and go. We see how few have visitors. It means so very much to them when someone cares enough to come.”
Our senior pastor will visit today, our other pastor on Tuesday. It took us 3 hours to get home from Stanford. We came home with much to think about. Thanks for any prayers.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for how You show Yourself as our help in trouble times. Thank You for how You are working on the inside of the people mentioned on this prayer thread. Thank You for being a healing balm and for being a blanket of comfort for the suffering. Thank You for being the remedy for anxiety over what the future holds. You have power to generate that peace that passes all earthly understanding. Thank You that as people witness their friends and family turning to You and receiving supernatural gifts of peace, calm, joy, and specific needs met in unusual ways, that they, too, experience a drawing to You from the Holy Spirit. May unsaved family members grow in spiritual ways that would have been impossible without seeing how You carry believers through suffering.
Thank You for blessing Karen with life despite the terrible health problems she has lived with for years. She is relatively young to have been basically homebound for years. Help her to transition into good health so she can get out and enjoy more of the beauty You put in the world. Thank You for her sweet spirit and caring heart along with her intelligence. Please help all the areas in her physical heart that were rerouted electrically to quickly repair and work properly to restore regular beating function.
I continue to lift up unsaved family members of this blog following. Please, Lord, may even the slightest movement toward belief be seen this week. Help us to realize proper times and seasons to speak about our faith. How will they believe without hearing and understanding? My friend, Care, tells me frequently a sincere thank you for not giving up on her. Thank You for letting me witness her transformation into a believer and see how she wants to share the good news.
Lord, I am tired. I try to do what I perceive would matter most to You. Help me to get better at discernment of what You want me to do daily.
Thank You for Mumsee, Mike and the Nest. Please help meet all their on-going needs whether physical, emotional, or spiritual. You are aware of each person in the mix and how to infuse divine harmony. May a sweetness flow throughout the house because Jesus is among them at the Nest.
I pray this in the name of precious Lord, Jesus. Amen
