Good Morning!
Two cats, one lamp. It nearly started a slap fight. 🙂
But in the end, the big kitty won the staring contest.
And no cats were harmed in the shooting of these pics. 🙂

I’m here Chas. It’s a cold, rainy/icy day along the Mississippi. So much rain recently has caused the river to be in flood stage. This is more like May than December. And since the temperature has dropped, I don’t think Mrs. L and I are going to venture out.

This is one of those poems I can say from memory because I really don’t remember I time that I didn’t know it and The Owl and the Pussy Cat
Eugene Field. 1850–1895
231. The Duel
THE GINGHAM dog and the calico cat
Side by side on the table sat;
‘T was half-past twelve, and (what do you think!)
Nor one nor t’ other had slept a wink!
The old Dutch clock and the Chinese plate 5
Appeared to know as sure as fate
There was going to be a terrible spat.
(I was n’t there; I simply state
What was told to me by the Chinese plate!)
The gingham dog went “bow-wow-wow!” 10
And the calico cat replied “mee-ow!”
The air was littered, an hour or so,
With bits of gingham and calico,
While the old Dutch clock in the chimney-place
Up with its hands before its face, 15
For it always dreaded a family row!
(Never mind: I ‘m only telling you
What the old Dutch clock declares is true!)
The Chinese plate looked very blue,
And wailed, “Oh, dear! what shall we do!” 20
But the gingham dog and the calico cat
Wallowed this way and tumbled that,
Employing every tooth and claw
In the awfullest way you ever saw—
And, oh! how the gingham and calico flew! 25
(Don’t fancy I exaggerate—
I got my news from the Chinese plate!)
Next morning where the two had sat
They found no trace of dog or cat;
And some folks think unto this day 30
That burglars stole that pair away!
But the truth about the cat and pup
Is this: they ate each other up!
Now what do you really think of that!
(The old Dutch clock it told me so, 35
And that is how I came to know.)

In school I worked in the library. I always introduced the K-1’s to the library, how to find a book and how to check it out. I also read to them each week. I usually read this around Christmas—even as a teacher.
Jest ‘Fore Christmas
by Eugene Field (1850-1895)
Father calls me William, sister calls me Will,
Mother calls me Willie, but the fellers call me Bill!
Mighty glad I ain’t a girl—ruther be a boy,
Without them sashes, curls, an’ things that ‘s worn by Fauntleroy!
Love to chawnk green apples an’ go swimmin’ in the lake—
Hate to take the castor-ile they give for bellyache!
‘Most all the time, the whole year round, there ain’t no flies on me,
But jest ‘fore Christmas I ‘m as good as I kin be!
Got a yeller dog named Sport, sick him on the cat;
First thing she knows she does n’t know where she is at!
Got a clipper sled, an’ when us kids goes out to slide,
‘Long comes the grocery cart, an’ we all hook a ride!
But sometimes when the grocery man is worrited an’ cross,
He reaches at us with his whip, an’ larrups up his hoss,
An’ then I laff an’ holler, “Oh, ye never teched me!”
But jest ‘fore Christmas I ‘m as good as I kin be!
Gran’ma says she hopes that when I git to be a man,
I ‘ll be a missionarer like her oldest brother, Dan,
As was et up by the cannibuls that lives in Ceylon’s Isle,
Where every prospeck pleases, an’ only man is vile!
But gran’ma she has never been to see a Wild West show,
Nor read the Life of Daniel Boone, or else I guess she ‘d know
That Buff’lo Bill an’ cowboys is good enough for me!
Excep’ jest ‘fore Christmas, when I ‘m good as I kin be!
And then old Sport he hangs around, so solemnlike an’ still,
His eyes they seem a-sayin’: “What’s the matter, little Bill?”
The old cat sneaks down off her perch an’ wonders what’s become
Of them two enemies of hern that used to make things hum!
But I am so perlite an’ tend so earnestly to biz,
That mother says to father: “How improved our Willie is!”
But father, havin’ been a boy hisself, suspicions me
When, jest ‘fore Christmas, I ‘m as good as I kin be!
For Christmas, with its lots an’ lots of candies, cakes, an’ toys,
Was made, they say, for proper kids an’ not for naughty boys;
So wash yer face an’ bresh yer hair, an’ mind yer p’s and q’s,
An’ don’t bust out yer pantaloons, and don’t wear out yer shoes;
Say “Yessum” to the ladies, and “Yessur” to the men,
An’ when they ‘s company, don’t pass yer plate for pie again;
But, thinkin’ of the things yer ‘d like to see upon that tree,
Jest ‘fore Christmas be as good as yer kin be!

I woke up to tornado warnings. I think most of it has moved north east by now, although we may get some more by lunch time.
My Bible study decided to put off gumbo until next Monday night. I hadn’t gotten it all the way made so I will freeze what I have and finish it off next week.
My friend G’s stepfather died yesterday morning after a long battle with kidney (?) disease. They are bringing him home from the Los Angeles area. The funeral will be next Monday. I will be glad to see my “bubba”. We have loved each other since 6th grade. A lot of his friends think we are really brother and sister.
It is back to work for me today and in between I will start dismantling Christmas. I would rather leave it up until Epiphany, but that I January 6th (my birthday!) and we are leaving on the early, early flight on the 8th.
Nana is coming here to stay with BG so I need to give the house a good cleaning as well and wash the linens on the guest bed. After all, I am the EX daughter-in-law. I don’t want her to find fault with me….Ha Ha. She still continues to be a great Nana and a pretty good ex MIL. I am lucky.
I dreamed of my father yesterday morning. I was in the still asleep but almost awake area. There were a lot of people at a house. Someone asked where BG was and we couldn’t find her. There was a man there who asked what the consequences would be if we hadn’t found her in an hour (I took that to mean that he was asking how she would be punished for leaving without clearing it with anyone). I said now problem I would track her on my phone. I walked in the house to get my phone but as I was walking in the front door several people were coming in the back door. The sun was behind them, and a man took up most of the doorway. As he walked toward me I realized it was my dad. I reached out to him to hug him as he was walking towards me but he turned away from me and disappeared. I tried to get him to come back but remembered BG was missing, I came out of the dream praying, “Please, God, don’t let anything happen to her”.

Submit one to another. Well, the easy part is when it does not really matter. Which curtains? His choice or hers? Which chairs for the church, red or blue? The challenge is to not do it with bitterness. As the questions become more difficult, which happens when we are more invested, it is important to carry through with the same attitude. Are the people I am dealing with more important than turkey over ham? Are they more important than whether the sermon is before or after the offering? The time to hang on is only when the other side is in direct conflict with the Word. If both sides are submitting, it works especially well. If only one is submitting, it works very well in the submitter and may be working in the non submitter. Helpful?

Well, nineteen year old daughter was supposed to catch the bus at the Canadian border to go visit her friends another seven hours north. It was a four hour drive for her but she neglected to consider the time change. She missed her bus by ten minutes. I suspect she could have raced on to the next bus stop and caught it there but I don’t know what she decided. She will figure it out.

Michelle, to answer your question from a non-Christian perspective, because some of the people you mentioned are not believers.
Holding on to a grudge or bitterness is like drinking poison and hoping the other person dies. It is like a cancer. It will eat you up inside and chances are the other person will tip toe through the tulips of life never knowing what they did. Why give them that power over you? I have even used real estate as an analogy. Pretend your head is real estate and it $500 per whatever unit of measure. Why let the other person take up valuable space?
In my life I have had 3 people hurt me beyond what I thought I could bear.
My mother–she is dead and she lost out on her only grandchild. I (despite a post over the weekend) can let her continue to control and ruin my life or let it go.
Someone I dated. I knew enough about his business practices to have the IRS look into him and bankrupt him. I wanted nothing to do with him and his mother. I was bitter and angry but if I had turned them in, I may have had to face them over the charges. Eventually I heard that he had lost his professional license and had filed bankruptcy. I thought I would gloat when and if it happened but I found I just didn’t care.
A man at another real estate firm set me up and cost me a very well paying job—I am still working on that one, and I hate that he his behind “praying to make the right decision” to do it, but I refuse to let him take up space in my head.
Revenge is a dish best served cold—often you find you have no taste for it at all.
Time heals all wounds, but it also wounds all heels.
Finally, the opposite of love isn’t hate…it’s indifference. They simply no longer matter.
(Did I work enough phrases into my answer?)

This is good advice too.
Advice from An Old Farmer
Your fences need to be horse-high, pig-tight and bull-strong.
Keep skunks and bankers at a distance.
Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.
A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor.
Words that soak into your ears are whispered… not yelled.
Meanness don’t jes’ happen overnight.
Forgive your enemies; it messes up their heads.
Do not corner something that you know is meaner than you.
It don’t take a very big person to carry a grudge.
You cannot unsay a cruel word.
Every path has a few puddles.
When you wallow with pigs, expect to get dirty.
The best sermons are lived, not preached.
Most of the stuff people worry about ain’t never gonna happen anyway.
Don’t judge folks by their relatives.
Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
Live a good, honorable life… Then when you get older and think back, you’ll enjoy it a second time.
Don ‘t interfere with somethin’ that ain’t bothering you none.
Timing has a lot to do with the outcome of a Rain dance.
If you find yourself in a hole, the first thing to do is stop diggin’.
Sometimes you get, and sometimes you get got.
The biggest troublemaker you’ll probably ever have to deal with, watches you from the mirror every mornin’.
Always drink upstream from the herd.
Good judgment comes from experience, and a lotta that comes from bad judgment.
Lettin’ the cat outta the bag is a whole lot easier than puttin’ it back in.
If you get to thinkin’ you’re a person of some influence, try orderin’ somebody else’s dog around..
Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Leave the rest to God.
Don’t pick a fight with an old man. If he is too old to fight, he’ll just kill you.
Most times, it just gets down to common sense.

Son just walked in and said, “It must be 80 degrees out there!” It’s sunny and not rainy as husband had gloomies said was predicted on the TV weather report when we arrived. It’s really too hot for me. But I am happy for those who are in the majority and want this for their vacation at the beach.

Kim, that was an intense dream. Those can really rattle you until you’re fully awake, but even then they kind of stick with you for a while.
Bright sunshine here (though we have a 20% chance of rain today), only supposed to be 59 degrees.
Phone said it was 57 in our community while we were at the dog park late yesterday. But we all agreed it was surely colder than that right there at the dog park, which is in a funnel that lies below the freeway on one side and a hill on the other side, the port just across the street to the east.
Hilarious story board today in kitty pictures. Glad the lamp survived!
There’s a strange cat that sometimes comes around our front porch. If Annie is out there (she usually hangs out on the porch in the evenings) she’ll give him what for and chase him off.
Cowboy is still fenced in. Success. For now.
And it’s back to work for me.
Chas’ mention of 2015 coming to a fast end made me remember I still need to get in to see my eye doctor so I can use my benefit for the year, but that may not happen. I’ll call and see if they’re around this week and can squeeze me in. But this is a short week and we’ll be under the gun to produce a lot of stories.
I think this is the year (every other year I get this) I get some $$ off on frames so I don’t want to waste that. Unless it would hold over to next year since it wasn’t used in 2015? Not sure.

10 degrees here this morning. Roads were closed last night and this morning. Lots of closed roads east of us. We had over 50 people stranded here. Was blessed to be able to help provide and serve meals for those people. We still have about 30 left who will still be here for supper and breakfast. Our school opened the gym, and the community worked together to provide the food. Was blessed to hear a dad telling his little boy “there are people out in the cold with their cars flipped. No word from Canada. Probably good. Husband is on his way home in his truck with one son. Another son is on his way up from the same place with his fiancee. And the third vehicle, from the same town, is coming up with two sons. It is the totaled vehicle that seventeen year old daughter used until she convinced herself to never drive again. Probably a good choice for her. But until last month she was begging everybody to cosign for a new car for her. How quickly life changes.

We had between 18 inches and 2 feet here. East of us on the flats they had close to the same. It is the drifts that get you. We have 5-6ft drifts here. I am sure they are higher east. Wind is getting up again, without a crust on the snow from any melting. Will be lots of moving snow in our state.
I am just happy that my hubby is home with us. We had some outdoor projects planned…not gonna happen this week.

I have a church lady friend who stands on her rights a lot and is quick to take offense and doesn’t realize how prideful she is. (Maybe I should point some fingers at myself?) It troubles me and I don’t know how to help her see that her refusal to submit herself to others may be part of the reason why young people refuse to submit themselves to her.
I’m not saying this right, but she has a lot of wise things to share but her method of demanding her right to say them to others, means many steer clear of her.
I’ve pondering what the real issue is and part of it seems to me a refusal to recognize that her lack of submission in a number of areas–as in submit yourself to one another in brotherly love–may be part of the problem.
Heartbreaking, really, and even I can only take her in chunks. When she gets on her high horse, which she has done several times in the last week, it is painful to know how to respond. 😦
