  1. 😦

Elvera subscribes to Family Circle magazine. She likes it and has subscribed for years.
Family Circle sent her a package. It is some cook books.
Thing is. She didn’t order these books. And has no use for them
They also sent her a bill for $15.+ and something for postage and handling.

She’s stressed out about what to do.
I told her that she should ignore it. She isn’t obliged to send them money.
It wouldn’t hurt her to send them the money they billed.
    Thing is…………
If she sends them money for those books, they will send her some more stuff.

Besides: That’s not the way it’s supposed to work.
If I order books, I send them money.
    Then
    They send the books.

It’s hard to do, but I’m insisting that she ignore the bill and subsequent dunning bills.
You can’t get into the habit of sending money to people who randomly send stuff.

Some organizations, often sends me a stamp to put on a return offering.
    I just keep the stamp.
Some send me a calendar or Christmas cards.
I have no obligation to respond.

There are organizations to whom I contribute once a year.
They send me something every month.

  2. Seems like everybody in the world wants me to send them $19.95 a month.
I don’t know if it’s national, but the Greenville Shriners hospital has a TV commercial with children making a plea for monthly contributions.

  3. Chas, do you know for sure she didn’t somehow order them? I’d be inclined to call them or send the books back.

For years I belonged to a book club, and monthly (if you didn’t cancel in time) they would send you a selection which you, of course, had to pay for. A couple of times I failed to reply in time. One time they sent a biography of Truman. The book had won some awards and was supposed to be a good book, but I have no interest in Truman. I decided to give it to my mom for Christmas. Puzzled, she asked why I had sent her a bio of Truman, and I told her I knew she liked biographies and this was supposed to be a good one. Well, it was a long one, but she read it and enjoyed it . . . and several years later she told me she had just read it for the second time, so obviously, while an accidental purchase, it worked as a gift.

One time they sent me a book and I had, in fact, sent back the card rejecting it. So instead of opening it, I called the company. They said to write “refused” on the package and send it back, so I did. Another time, I knew it was my fault, that I had failed to send the card, and I took the box to the post office but wanted to buy postage, but they pretty much insisted, “Just write ‘refused’ on the package,” so I ended up doing that. (I ordered many books from the company through the years, though very rarely was it the book they featured.) One time, thinking it was a book I had ordered, I opened the package and saw it was instead the “book of the month,” so I glued the flap again and took it to the post office with “refused,” and nobody said, “Did you glue that flap shut?” They weren’t supposed to send it, and I didn’t even take anything out of the box, I just saw the spine and the title, knew it was the book they weren’t supposed to send, and just glued it back up to return it.

  4. I hesitate to tell this because I know nobody will believe it.
    But it’s true.
Chas can do stupid things. 😯

Years ago, I signed Blue Cross for my health insurance.
When I turned 65, Medicare became my primary. That isn’t what I wanted, but what I got.
Blue Cross didn’t reduce my premiums, I still has “Self and family” even after Chuck left and it was just the two of us.
This past year, Blue Cross added another category “Self plus one”. That means that just the two of us are covered.
    IDEAL
So I signed up for that. I save $15/month. Not much, but it is $180/year savings.
    Everything went smoothly.
Blue Cross sent me new insurance cards.
    So?
I cut up the old cards.
Then I looked at the new cards.
They become effective on January 1 !!
Now I don’t have insurance cards.
Not tragic, but it makes me feel so silly.

  5. Cheryl, I operate on the system where I pay for the book and they send the book.
    In that order.
She used to belong to a book a month club. We had oodles of books we never read.

Have you noticed that you can have automatic withdrawals from your bank account for various things? Chuck has his church withdraw his tithe automatically.
I have that for YMCA,. Once a year, Newsmax withdraws a subscription fee.
Have you noticed that it’s really easy to get onto an automatic withdrawal plan.
    Almost impossible to get off.

  6. Chas, I did something similar. Not even sure why I had no insurance card, but I called the company and they sent me one. It happens.

I once signed up for a drawing online and it turned out to sign me up for a subscription I did not want. I notified them immediately and they cancelled it. It is easy to fill out forms online or at the mall and not realize you are signing up for more than a contest. OTOH, some unscrupulous businesses will send things hoping to catch some business. I would call them and make sure she receives no more.

🙂 Wonderful celebrating my sweet cousin’s wedding.

🙂 Danced at a wedding for the first time in my life!

🙂 Great family time with extended family – some of whom I haven’t seen in 17 years, but it felt like it was just yesterday.

🙂 Beautiful drive there through the mountains (I love mountains)

😦 Horrible, scary, treacherous drive back to Calgary. We have all wheel drive and winter tires but it was so sketchy. So much traffic had back up due to the road closures and conditions were compact snow, rough ice, slush, black ice. NO FUN.

🙂 Thankful for the skillful driving of my husband. I would have pulled over and curled up in a ball and sobbed.

🙂 Christmas decorating starting at our house today!

😦 Loads of laundry to get done.

  9. I got caught in a book subscription once, I’d signed up for some dog behavior books — I think 3 titles were listed in the ad. Got them (paid for them as they arrived), they were good. But then ANOTHER one arrived. It was then that I realized that this was a never-ending series of dog books, not just the 3 I intended to get. So I cancelled, sent the 4th book back with the unpaid invoice.

🙂 Saturday. My trees are still trimmed. 🙂 Glad that’s done, but I sometimes lament about all I need to do around here. I really need new blinds/window coverings. But first I need to get this roof checked out.

😦 Still no rain (although that probably is a rave since I haven’t had my roof checked out; see above).

🙂 Got to interview and do a story on a fellow church member yesterday, always fun (last time was a story on a church member who does interview/feature shows for one of the local cable stations — he won a very big award for that last year).

New story is on church member who started her own businesses making & selling furniture made from the wood used in the old Hollywood Bowl bench seats (her brother, a contractor, got the job to remove them last year when they were to be replaced, so they bought the wood).

  10. Kare2012, we just recently had a drive like that (without the mountains, of course) and saw many cars in the ditch. Lots of police, wreckers etc. Sometimes things can happen, but so much could be prevented if people actually drove according to the conditions!

  11. Kathaleena, a lot of the problems are the huge hills the semis have to climb. The super Bs just seem to spin out and jackknife and make a mess. There was a head-on collision between 2 semis with 1 fatality and 2 seriously injured. We passed the aftermath on the side of the road – it looked just terrible.

  12. 🙂 We’ve had some extremely good (not always easy) conversations this week with our older daughter and/or her fiancee. They aren’t saying, “We’re grown, leave us alone” but “We’d like your advice.” It’s a fine line to walk, but I think their openness shows wisdom.

😦 We’re in the process of getting measurable snow, and we’re not into December yet. I don’t like to see the stuff until December; it makes winter too long to start earlier than that.

😦 We went from “it’s in the sixties, let’s go walking” to several inches of snow expected in less than a week. I guess we were in danger of getting spoiled.

🙂 I continue to get word-of-mouth editing referrals. It took me twelve years to get to the point of telling people “I’m busy this month and next, but I can put you on the schedule in two months.” This never happens in the fall months; I’m interested to see how it works out next year, once I get to the months that are usually busy!

  13. Nine year old is doing the dishes. Eight year old is washing the table and sweeping the floor. Fourteen year olds are sitting in their assigned chairs doing nothing. Though later, I expect fourteen year old girl will begin sewing some more on the skirt she is making. One eighteen year old is off to basketball practice and then to cover for sixteen year old at the gun club. Sixteen and eighteen year olds are off to Lewiston for their black belt test in Karate. Husband went to watch. Another busy Saturday and life is good.

  14. 😦 We’re so short-staffed now that, for the first time, we’re taking a fair number of freelance pieces on local features/news. One former reporter at one of our sister papers (who decided to be a stay-at-home mom but still needs extra income) has turned around and done freelance for us (and for the Times where her husband works).

🙂 When/If my job goes away, at least there may be some more freelance writing opportunities as standing news staffs everywhere shrink-shrink-shrink.

😦 We’re in a very dry spell (think chapped-skin dry) with desert winds again, warm during the day (80-ish) and cold at night. Should cool off and get more back to normal later next week.

We, too, have our weekly church donations automatically withdrawn from our account.

We can reprint our insurance cards online – you might check into that.

When I took over my parent’s finances late in their lives, I discovered two payments of around $5.99 against their Visa card every month. They had been there for several years and they had no clue what they were. When I investigated, I found they were things my mother had inadvertently agreed to when phone-ordering something from one of those catalogs she got. One was for a travel plan and the other for a large-purchase buying club. Both graciously back-dated credits.

  16. 🙂 Home again.

🙂 Hubby got to come home also. He was going to have to work through the weekend.

😦 Son and I both got sick last night. Cough, fever, mucus.

🙂 Property taxes all paid this week. This has been a huge stressor in past years. So thankful to have sold the house in Albuquerque.

  17. That’s for sure. One of my most productive days ever was this week, the day after getting that 12 hours of sleep. Ahhh! 🙂

And another great day today, after 10 hours of sleep last night. 🙂

🙂 Went through the coats/boots/snowpants/hats/mittens/gloves for the kids, and only 4th Arrow needed new boots and gloves. Everyone else has everything they need. So glad to find so many usable hand-me-downs and be spared a lot of expense.

  18. Michelle – All of us have had a cold for a couple weeks now. It started slowly, & had me thinking it was just a mild one. Then it hit harder, & hung on for a while. It is finally easing up. I hope yours passes quickly.

  19. I wondered if I would get my duet partner’s cold. She picked up a nasty bug while she was on vacation in Europe, and when she returned in early November, we met up two times before our performance last weekend. The cold hung on, and sounded worse the night of the performance than it had the other two times.

The first time I met with her after her return, it wasn’t to practice, but to exchange some music. She and I both drove to a central location, between our homes, and I sat in her car a while, and we talked about her vacation, the music, and other things. It was a chilly day, so her car windows were up.

Fortunately, she wasn’t coughing (at that time, but she was the night of the show), just sniffling some, so I think that helped improve my chances of not catching her cold while in that small enclosed space.

  20. Cheryl, that’s great about the word-of-mouth referrals you’re getting!

Kare, I know what you mean about feeling like curling up into a sobbing ball after driving bad roads. The tension is awful, with all that black ice and all the rest of it. I’m glad my husband drives when it’s the two of us, or the family.

My parents had had some trouble years ago with having gotten record albums or singles or something in the mail, and having them keep coming, with a bill due, after they requested it be stopped. (I’m not sure if they had even signed up to receive any — I think they did, but too many came.)

After some time elapsed, and they weren’t having any success in stopping the records from coming, my mom told them if they wouldn’t stop sending unwanted records and bills for them, she would get her lawyer brother on the case.

They didn’t receive any more records or payment due notices after that. 😉

  21. 😦 Carol had 30 books to return to the little Hollywood branch LA city library and when we got there they said some were overdue so (along with past overdue fees she never paid) she owed them $44. Ack. Carol is always broke after the first of the month.

🙂 The head librarian kindly knocked it down to $14 and I paid it, I told Carol from now on she should just borrow books via the kindle system all the libraries have now (she’s done that before). That way, when a book is due, it just vanishes from your device and you don’t have to worry about accumulating late fees. Honestly, I don’t know why they let people take out so many books at one time now. 😦 😦

😦 Worried about her health. Talked to the nurse at the facility but didn’t get much from her, only repeated assurances (through a very thick Philippine accent) that “Carol is under our primary care” and that doctor assistants stop in every Wednesday to see patients who want to be seen. I knew that already but wonder if Carol isn’t being articulate — even today she said she doesn’t feel any different and didn’t think anything was really wrong with her, but I sure do. 😦 Anyway, I texted her brother in NJ, we’ll see what he thinks should be done.

  22. You wouldn’t think she would be able to check out books when she’s got outstanding fees. Maybe under a certain dollar amount she still could, though, and if she got huge numbers of books the second time, and was way overdue with those, the amount owed could go very high.

    Yikes, $44.

When I was a kid, I think our limit was 20 books at the public library. None of the libraries in my area now have limits. I wonder if they have a lot more books and/or fewer patrons now, that they don’t need to put limits on the items that are physically checked out from the shelves?

  23. 🙂 Just had a call from her, she sounded ok, said she took a nap — still sounding ‘slow’ or something, but maybe whatever happened won’t leave permanent impairments. She was talking about going Wednesday to the med visit & making a list of things that are bothering her … And hopefully my call the nurse today at least will put her more on their radar so they’ll more closely watch her.

  26. I don’t remember ever checking out more than one book at a time.
I have never paid a library fine.
I get a book, read it and return it. Usually, but not always, within a week.

  27. When I had middle school and younger children we would check out 50 books at a time. Then all go home to read. I read everything my children read so I would know what was in those books. The youngest taught herself to read since we were all reading and no one wanted to read to her right then. I think that she began with the Calvin and Hobbes books.

  28. Donna, have you sent the photo to AJ yet? (You could e-mail it to me, too.) 🙂

I think our limit on books might have been a dozen each, something like that. I’d get the limit, sometimes having to put one or two back on the shelf to get it down to the limit. I’d read them and in two weeks we’d go back and get more. Once in a while I wouldn’t be finished with one, and would have to use one of my allotted books to renew one . . . I tried not to do that too often!

I remember one time I had one of the books in the Little Women group; it might have been Little Men. It didn’t enthrall me and so I was slow in getting into it, and needed to renew it. Shortly before we went to the library Mom told us we weren’t going to check out any new books, just return the ones we had, and it was kind of a crisis for me. I had to leave it unfinished! To this day I rarely do that (though I have several books I’ve been working through slowly, some of them for years–but with fiction I don’t do that). I never finished The Hunchback of Notre Dame, since the print was so small it was hard to read, and more than 100 pages in I realized I still didn’t know what was going on, and furthermore I didn’t care, and it was time to give up on the thing. But that’s pretty rare for me.
