Hillary Clinton is now supporting a federal investigation of ExxonMobil following the latest disclosures that the giant oil company worked to hide the effects of climate change. Her call for an investigation comes only months after the company decided to stop sponsoring her family’s foundation.
The Clinton Foundation has accepted at least $1 million from ExxonMobil, despite the company’s history of financing challenges to climate science. And Clinton’s State Department touted ExxonMobil as an example of how America should look at Iraq as “a business opportunity.”
I was just catching up on the news threads, and saw the article posted by Anonymous on the 29th about schools in California giving a passing grade to those with 20%. This shows why I would prefer getting rid of the letter grades and just go with percentages. Then, an employer or prospective college administrator could see exactly what the student can do. Example: When I taught at a rural school in Missouri, a 59% was the lowest passing grade. So a transcript would show that as a D-. Where I teach now, 67% is the lowest passing grade. The other school had 80% as the lowest B. That would be a C where I teach now, since 85% is a low B. So, let’s get rid of letters since there is not uniformity in what they represent. Let’s do what some Latin American countries do and give numeric grades: 10=100%, 9=90%, etc. Or just report the raw percentage and skip the interpretations.
Oh, and when I grade a test, I don’t put the letter grade on it, just the percentage.

The other week I read a review of the new film ‘Black Mass’. The review said that is was based on a real life account, so I looked up the facts. As I read them, I couldn’t help drawing parallels to today ‘immigration’ crisis. ‘Black Mass’ is a biopic of Whitey Bulger, who ran the Irish mob outfit of the Winter Hill Gang in Boston and brutally murdered several people. He was one of the more recent in a long line of Irish mobster and terrorists which came with genuine Irish immigrants to the New World. In 1868, one of Canada’s Founding Fathers of Confederation, Thomas D’Arcy McGee, himself an Irish-Catholic immigrant, was assassinated by the Fenians, an Irish-Catholic terrorist organization. There were many ‘concerned citizens’ beginning in the 1850s who protested the allowance of such a criminal people as the Irish to emigrate, claiming that crime had risen dramatically since their arrival:

However, the majority of Italian-Americans and Canadians are law abiding citizens.
I have lived in a Muslim country, and have gone out and even travelled by myself within that country with no fear of harassment, let alone rape. I have lived in an inner city in Canada where there was a very high percentage of Muslim immigrants in the area where I lived, and once again, suffered no harassment. The truth is, although Muslims do tend to have a low view of women like the extreme patriarchal Christians discussed yesterday, most of them can and do control themselves, both in their own countries and in the West. There are Muslim countries in which sexual assault is a problem, but there are non-Muslim countries in which sexual assault is also a problem. The Congo, where estimates are that over 40 women are raped every hour, and India, with its multiple reports of women dying in brutal gang rapes, come to mind in the latter category. Of course, there will be some difficulties to be got over. People who go from one very different culture to a new one do have trouble adjusting – we would have trouble adjusting if we had to flee into their culture. Poverty often is the lot of new immigrants – yes, there are more benefits now available to immigrants, but even so, I knew of a high-ranking Pakistani civil servant who drove taxis and lived in relative poverty in Canada and his is not an uncommon case – and for some, especially the young, crime will seem an easy way out. As for the religious aspect, yes, that is a concern. On the other hand, many Christians view it as an opportunity. The Catholicism of the Irish and Italians was also viewed as a threat due to the history of violent religious coercion by the Catholic Church. About 100 years later, the pope has visited America, something which at one time would have been viewed as having sinister significance, and yet no one fears the Jesuits are about to take over. If Western culture is not strong enough at this point to absorb yet another wave of immigrants, that is the fault of the culture, not of the people who are seeking refuge. Their need is not lessened simply because they will be a challenge.
With their anemic birthrates and abandonment of virtually all traditional moral values, the U.S., Canada and Western Europe are not going to survive for long with their current cultures.
1. Western Canada is receiving a huge influx of immigrants from Asia. It is possible that Canada may be a largely Asian country in 2060. Since Christianity is growing in Asia, this is probably a good thing.
2. Demographically, the U.S. is becoming more like Brazil. Though this will probably mean economic regression, I would rather my children live in Brazil than in atheist Boston, San Francisco or Sweden.
3. Even without the huge influx on new immigrants, Western Europe was aging and dying out. Those countries can’t reproduce. The refugee crisis produced by Little Bush with an assist from Obama (who together created chaos throughout the Middle East) merely accelerated the process.
It would not surprise me if some Western Europeans begin to flee to Canada or Australia. I do not think many will flee to the U.S. just as I don’t think many will flee to Brazil.
