  1. Volkswagen’s attempt to evade EPA rules makes me want to buy one of their vehicles. Unfortunately, all of their cars seem too slow. My wife suggested I buy Herbie, the Love Bug.

  2. Which reminds me, my husband said this morning that the owners of those cars are being raked over the coals twice: 1. by VW, 2. By the EPA now, essentially, saying their expensive cars are now worthless.

In his opinion, the EPA (or whomever is in charge), should grandfather all the owners for the requirements, since they bought in good faith, and force VW to pay their fines and clean up their cars.

I mean, really, is it fair if you buy a car in good faith and then discover the company was cheating and thus your car is now worthless?

Well, not worthless, but except for Ricky, I don’t know anyone who would buy one at this moment.

But then, we’re Lutherans–all about grace.

  3. Michelle, government agencies don’t use compassion nor logic.
They follow rules somebody in Washington makes.
    Nobody knows who..
Policy is what they call it.

  4. On the pope, I posed this at the daily thread, too: http://www.theamericanconservative.com/dreher/the-anti-benedict-conspiracy/

VWs aren’t cheap to buy anymore, which is why I had to abandon them last time I had to buy a car. They kept getting more and more expensive; I was eyeing that Toureg small SUV until I learned it cost about $30,000 (and it was a new model, no used ones available). Even the Jettas were getting prohibitive, price-wise. Loved VWs, but felt I was just being left behind with their rising prices.

So a (gently) used Jeep had to suffice. 😉

  5. The EPA ratings have always been worthless. For years they favored domestic cars as they were consistently more inaccurate on domestics. We have private magazines (Consumer Reports, Car and Driver, Road & Track, etc) that actually drive cars and report the mileage results. I read these reports and have always ignored the EPA mileage figures on the stickers. People who like and understand cars could care less about the comments of a federal agency. Michelle, I would buy both of your brother’s cars in a minute except that I know neither has 300 horse power (the minimum requirement for male Texans).

I have several friends that recently bought VW diesels and love them. They will continue to love them regardless of anything the idiotic EPA says or does. Now they will also get a nice check from Volkswagen.

Hopefully, the EPA will put all their staff on this case instead of having them dump more toxic waste into Colorado rivers.

  6. Most male Texans have two trucks. Both have V-8s. Both are crew cabs and they are generally long beds. The “new truck” is the only one his wife will ride in and is used only on formal occasions and to transport female family members. After a few years it will become the “work truck” and will be used to transport male friends, workers, animals and debris for many more years. When the “new truck” becomes the “work truck” the old work truck is given to the Texan’s favorite Mexican, who like the Comanches in The Searchers will drive that truck for many more years, then part it out.

A lady who teaches Sunday School with me noted that male Texans, like me, who don’t drive trucks also have two vehicles: a “car” and a “race car”.
