  1. 🙂 Plenty of editing work as we head into September (two active projects, two projects that are back with authors for rewrites, and one pending project), which is unheard of after July.

😦 Too much work to juggle everything well, so housework isn’t staying as close to the top of the list as it should.

🙂 Our daughter and her suitor both enjoy hanging out here with family (their own choice) or in the kitchen with the two of them.

😦 Constant conversation in the other room for hours at a time makes it that much harder to focus on my work.

🙂 We’ve had a really lovely summer, and I’ve gotten to spend a lot of time outdoors.

😦 Summer is nearly over, and my husband and I have spent little time outside together.

  2. Cheryl – Maybe try ear plugs, or use earbuds to listen to some non-distracting music. Every now & then, while I am in the living room trying to read, Lee will want to flip through channels on the TV or watch the news. I put in my earbuds & listen to music to semi-drown out the TV. (I could totally drown it out, but I’d have to have the music too loud in my ears to do so.)

  3. 😦 Cheryl’s last rant reminds me of something that is really bothering Lee, to the point of tears sometimes. Thinking the route would sell much earlier (being led on to think so), he had looked forward to spending time with Forrest this summer, playing outside. But the route has not sold yet, & on his days off, he is too tired to play much outside, or too busy with other stuff (ordering for the route, appointments, etc.). He is pretty depressed about that.

I told him that part of his depression is probably due to lack of sleep, which can really raise havoc with our emotions. (Something I, as well as a lot of you, know from frequent experience.)

😦 I’ve previously mentioned that three-day weekends for Lee involve working much harder & longer on the day before & the day after. (A three-day weekend for him is actually two days, Sun. & Mon., with another day off during the week as usual.)

When Artie-the-Russian was in the process of buying the route, Lee was glad that he wouldn’t have to deal with Memorial Day weekend. But of course, he did. And then the 4th of July weekend, & now we’re coming up to Labor Day weekend, AND he’s back to delivering to the schools.

We’re trying so hard to believe that this is all in God’s timing rather than look at it as being due to being “screwed” (excuse the crude word) by Artie & then Ralph.

🙂 God is still in control, He is still our Lord, He still loves us, & we love Him.

  4. 😦 Adult children who will take advantage of a mother, who is dealing with cancer. for babysitting purposes. They claim they cannot afford daycare, but manage to have money for brand new cars, major league ball games etc. It makes me sad to see. I am so glad I do not have children who would do this.

🙂 Prayer warriors. All Christians who take the admonition to pray for one another(and for others) seriously.

    😦 Teeth problems.

🙂 No pain and having access to dental professionals.

  5. Karen, thanks for the idea. I can’t really listen to music and work. I do manage to get some work done. On at least one occasion we’ve told them that I need to get a lot of work done that day, and they respect it and don’t come in to the library to chat (as they sometimes do). But sometimes the house can be a hub of activity if everyone is home and awake. My husband and I will be in here (the library/office) at our separate computers that face each other, and the young couple will be in the kitchen (to get to it, you go from the library to the living room and then to the kitchen, so conversation in there can be heard in the library, but not enough to hear the words unless people are excited and talking loudly), and our younger daughter (the extrovert of the family) will go in there and talk with them for an hour, and then she’ll come in here and talk to us, and then maybe they end up coming in here too, or my husband goes in there to talk to them and after a while I feel like I need to be social and go in there for a while too . . .

So basically I can close the library door and get some work done, but some of my work is stuff I do on hard copy, and I usually go in the living room or the kitchen for that (that’s what I’m working on today), but I can’t do either of those if they are here and in the kitchen. So today I’m trying to get as much done as possible before they get here (after my daughter gets off work). I usually kind of work “second shift,” and that doesn’t work well when we have a house full of people during my usual work hours, so I’m trying to be more proactive about working my schedule around the hours that everyone will be here and talking.

  6. 🙂 I’m with Kim. It’s SATURDAY !!! 🙂

    🙂 With a 3-day weekend approaching.

In the past, I was always quick to volunteer to work holidays but they’ve cut back the formula for how much OT we can collect for those shifts now (demanding we take a “comp” day) so I’m not so eager anymore (nor is anyone else, it’s a chore to find people to work those days now where it didn’t used to be due to the extra $$ — I think the last time, 4th of July, our editor got two of us to work 4 hours or something like that).

😦 Working for a newspaper that’s always broke, apparently (but not really, it’s just that we’re being run by bankers in a hedge fund which seems to actually be doing quite well).

🙂 Our remodel seems to be on track at church and we should be back in our leased (big business office-turned-into-a-‘church’) space on Sept. 20. It’s bound to be much nicer & more comfortable (we’re getting new chairs), plus we will have a smidgen more room.

In the meantime, we’re meeting Sunday afternoons at the PCUSA church near the beach which is a treat.

We pack the pews & sound amazing when we sing amid those vaulted-ceiling acoustics. 🙂 And the church is filled with natural light streaming through the stained glass windows at that time of day (the ocean is virtually 2 blocks away and visible from outside the church). Wouldn’t it be nice, as the Beach Boys sang. Sigh.

😦 Crazy time at work with the homelessness issue virtually exploding and keeping me very busy. A massive community meeting is planned for Thursday night (in our 1930s movie theater, and with 1,800 seats I suspect it will be an overflow crowd).

Editor thinks we should also live blog the event so another reporter will come with me to handle that, but I need to find out what our WifI and other media set up options will be. They’re expecting TV to come as well, so I’m guessing they’ll make arrangements for some kind of dedicated media space inside with hookups.

But it will still be tricky to file in time for our fairly early evening print deadlines for the physical paper the next day. They may be able to push that back an hour or so, though.

  7. 🙂 😦 Social media and how it drives the news, in both good and bad ways. It can be very effective in spreading and sharing needed information.

On the other hand, I honestly can’t remember such a sustained outrage over a story (locally) and realize that it’s largely due to the social media component that has sparked factions & dueling pro- and con- FB pages, rants galore, name-calling and inflammatory photos that seem to post every 30 seconds and draw even more online screeds. Oy.

  9. Mumsee, nope! About 15 staff went running to see the bear and it promptly went up a tree. The director had to tell everyone to leave it alone and I’m sure it ran off as soon as it felt safe again. I’d be scared of that many people and that much noise coming at me, too!

  10. We did that to a poor bear on a camping trip a few years ago. Somebody yelled “bear!” and a bunch of my children went racing over to see it. Poor guy took off.

  11. We have had several rain showers and expect more throughout the week. They came with thunder but the rain is good and should help with the fires. The one south jumped the river and started up the other side. Still a lot of people under evacuation orders and lots of forest closed. But the rain is good. With highs in the sixties.

  12. 🙂 Good worship time today (last Sunday of the month is ‘unplugged,’ singing only from the hymnals with piano alone) — We sang “All People That On Earth Do Dwell” (doxology, ‘old 100th’), “The Church’s One Foundation,” “Rock of Ages,” “It Is Well With My Soul” and “Rejoice the Lord is King.”

🙂 Will LOVE getting back to morning worship in a few weeks. It’s odd having church the last thing on your schedule for the weekend.

    😦 Long, intense week ahead.

😦 🙂 Saw my first 2016 bumper sticker today — ‘BERNIE’
