  1. A couple of things come to mind on the Detroit story, Michelle. The first is that Baphomet, as a demon, is a figment of modern imagination. The, ahem, popular image was first drawn in 1856, not the year, or century, or even millennium, in which one would expect to find any authentic pagan knowledge in the West. The name Baphomet, first appearing in a Crusader’s letter, was a misspelled reference to Muhammed (Mahomet). Some members of the Knights Templar, under trial by torture by command of King Philip IV of France in 1307, confessed to worshipping Baphomet; although others denied all knowledge of such a thing. [There is no evidence from historical artifacts and documents of the Templars that the they did any such thing – King Philip extracted a similar confession of blasphemy from the unfortunate Pope Boniface VIII via torture; he was good at that kind of thing.] The Time article had it right when it called the modern movement Libertarian Gothic, or maybe it should be called Satanic Steampunk.

The second is, Buddhists have raised statues of Buddhists in their temples in North America, and Hindu have done the same with their many gods. Baphomet is no more a powerful or fearful figure than the many armed Shiva. Satan is real and demons do move and work. However, Paul, while standing on Mars Hill, which was about as pluralistically pagan as it gets, and full of all kinds of images (and practices), ignored them all, and instead pointed to an obscure altar to the Unknown God. As Paul said, “We know that an idol is nothing.”

  2. Since the old idol is now in Detroit, I feel certain he will be stolen and sold for scrap in the near future. He may wind up as part of your next Chevrolet.
