Good Morning!

On this day in 0452 Italy was invaded by Attila the Hun.

In 1790 the first loan ever taken by the U.S. govt was repaid. The Temporary Loan of 1789 was negotiated and secured on September 18, 1789 by Alexander Hamilton.

In 1869 Ives W. McGaffey received a U.S. patent for the suction vacuum cleaner.

In 1947 “Lassie Show” debuted on ABC radio.

And in 1967 Israeli airplanes attacked the USS Liberty in the Mediterranean during the 6-Day War between Israel and its Arab neighbors. 34 U.S. Navy crewmen were killed. Israel later called the incident a tragic mistake due to the mis-identification of the ship. The U.S. has never publicly investigated the incident.

  1. Good Monday morning to you! No rain this morning and the sun is shining so beautifully in the forest today….there are also two coyotes hanging out on the property and they make me a tad bit nervous….they have been roaming about for the past 45 minutes and they aren’t leaving…both appear to be hobbling and one has no tail…I wonder if they are kicked out of the pack if they are injured?

  2. WHERE ARE THE GIRLS?
I go away for a couple of hours and they are replaced by a grey wol
225 years from zero to 18 trillion.
Does anyone know how much 18 trillion dollars is?
Other than China, who else owns that debt? It would take 18 million millionaires to pay it down.

  3. Good Morning Everyone. Amos and I had a pleasant morning. I awoke, patted next to me, he scooted up and got morning scratches for a few minutes, we decided to get up and take care of his business and make the coffee. Eventually I had to come to work but left him snoozing in the leather chair.
No Lulabelle whining, trying to crawl on the sofa, knocking over my coffee, etc. We will get an email on Wednesday about her, a video posted on Thursday on FB and other updates as to her progress. Oh, please dear Lord, let her come home a better dog. She really is a sweetheart, she just doesn’t know how to behave.

  4. Monday, Monday.

Our closing hymn yesterday was “All Must Be Well” — last two stanzas:

Though we pass through tribulation, all will be well
Ours is such a full salvation, all is well
    Happy still in God confiding
    Fruitful if in Christ abiding
    Steadfast though the Spirit’s guiding
    All must be well

We can expect a bright tomorrow; all will be well
Faith can sing through days of sorrow, all is well
    On our Father’s love relying
    Jesus every need supplying
Yes in living or in dying
    All must be well

  5. Doing a followup story today on the proposal to use one of our most polluted inner harbor beaches as a dog beach. I’m afraid it’s a non-starter, lots of criticism already, but it will be discussed today in an LA City Council committee that I should be able to listen to via council phone or online.

    Wolf!

Coyotes … besides cars, they have no natural predators where I live (nor in other cities and suburban neighborhoods across the country where their numbers are rapidly growing — “exploding” according to one person I know who has followed the coyote-pet-human conflict closely and lives where it’s become a major problem).

A 3-year-old was bitten by one a few weeks ago in a Southern California city and not far away an elderly woman was bit as she tried to defend her little dog from a coyote attack.

I remember talking to a woman a couple years ago who told me that a pack of coyotes started surrounding hers and her friend’s dogs — two large labs — on a walk in an open area on our horsey peninsula. The owners managed to chase them off, but it really rattled her, she said there was no doubt they would have gone in and tried to take their dogs down.

Two cats (that I know of) have been killed by coyotes on my block over the past year. I really think their growing population will be come an issue in the coming years — and I’m not sure what the solution is, they are very difficult to trap.

  6. I forgot I have two guests coming this afternoon so rather than dance zumba, I’ve been house cleaning– a little whisk here, a little whisk there; if only I had put on my heels and pearls!

    Not.

My brother and niece are touring Stanford today, will tour Cal on Wednesday. She’s smart enough to get into both, it will be interesting to hear how it goes. Stanford is one of the most select schools in the country–less than 3% of applicants are matriculated.

Niece prefered Yale over Harvard, but that’s another ball game and far beyond my abilities to imagine.

I liked Yale, too, a prettier school than Harvard; though the year I toured–1981–I calculated that even if I set aside a dollar a day until that baby I held went to college, I wouldn’t have had enough money to pay for the first year of tuition in 1980 dollars. I read yesterday that one year at Yale costs $64,000.

    Oh my.

WAY out of my ballpark–or 12 times the cost of my entire degree at UCLA back in the dark ages.

    What a strange world.

  7. Five acres never looked bigger than when I took a couple of months off to take care of husband and his knee surgery and then went out to get started. Where to begin….

  8. I don’t think he even looks like the real Col Sanders and YES he IS creepy. Of course the absolute creepiest is Burger King. I could see that being used in a horror movie or robbery rather than masks of the presidents.
Of course the last time I ate at a Burger King was July of 2013 somewhere in south Florida.

  9. I haven’t seen the commercial, so he doesn’t look creepy. And I agree that the Burger King looks scary.

I spent the morning dealing with registering two cars- the one D3 bought and our minivan. In MO we have to get a vehicle inspected first (it’s a joke), and the minivan failed due to brakes. I called my mechanic (he doesn’t do the inspections) and he remembers putting new brakes on it recently. He’ll look at it tomorrow.

  10. Just the other day, Snowball was under the deck playing with one of those. I don’t know what kind. Seven year old girl came to tell me he had one and by the time I got around, he was way under the deck. But he is still alive so it was probably not a rattler. That is the reason I need to get the grass mowed, though.

  11. I haven’t seen the new Col Sanders, but the second one of anything is almost always a disappointment.
When I arrived in the DC area, there were two guys on the evening WRC program Walker and Scott, the Joy boys. Ed Walker later went to PBS and later to WMAL. Willard Scott became the Weather Man on one of the networks. The point of this is:
Willard Scott was the original Ronald McDonald and also the bear (forgot his name) that says “Only you can prevent wildfires”.
The second one can never meet expectations.

  12. So, why is it when you are looking shabby and go to the mailbox thinking you won’t see anyone, twice in one day, you see someone while there? It’s really warm in our house, like finally about time to turn on the A/C. So I am dressed in cool clothes, and have hair pulled into pony tail and covered with stretchy head bands so it is like a weird colorful braid. First time I went to mailbox, I decided to snap a few pictures of the rose directly across the street. My alert neighbor (who caught the burglars on their other side) saw me and brought his clippers to give me a rose. Very kind, but kind of embarassing. Then another time I went out to the mailbox and a guy slowly rides up the hill on his bicycle and stops and asks me the time. I still have not gotten my mail. I wonder who I will see this time? Perhaps I should do my hair and makeup and put on a nice outfit?

  13. Janice, that will insure that you won’t see anyone.
Go just as you are. Those people didn’t think anything about it.
Just somebody going to the mailbox.

  14. Be Joyful, commentary on Philippians, is free for Kindle at Amazon.

Thanks, Chas, for your common sense thoughts. I have never gotten over the time a neighbor peer student saw me at the mailbox when I had not put on my mascra and he said, “Where are your eyes?” Wounded for life!!! But I stopped wearing eye makeup years ago. These days the world looks better without eyes. 🙂

  16. Janice…those days I decide to stay in my PJ’s…no make up…a sure fire way to get someone to knock on my door! I believe the last time this happened two Jehovah Witnesses knocked on the door…it was snowing, cold and dreary outside….I think I scared them…they didn’t even try to talk to me…they handed me their pamphlet through the door and left! 😛

  17. I am nearly always out of the night wear and into the day wear by five thirty in the morning. But makeup has not seen my face for thirty years except when my son got married and my daughter in law wanted me to look more human and had her sister put some on me. Today, for town wear, I went in weed eating cammo. Not my first choice but I had lots to do, and still do, and had to go pick up the small folk from VBS. Husband and sons dropped them off on the way to Boise for the knee surgery follow up appt. Leaving me here to eat weeds…..but they do tend to be attached to me.

  18. Definitely the weeds. And they are indeed. We have quite the selection for your culinary experience when you arrive. Mallow, lambs quarter, pigweed, prickly lettuce, thistle, burdock, dandelion, and hollyhock for starters.

  19. Mumsee, I think a salad of that combination should work for a final toxic cleanse!

Tonight was the night to turn on the A/C. Husband said he broke a sweat (the first time this year) when he walked into the house. I checked and the themostat said 84 degrees downstairs. Probably close to ten degrees hotter upstairs.

  20. Creepy Colonels, dark jubilees, snakes in the grass, people with no eyes and covered in weeds … Guess I don’t have to watch Criminal Minds tonight.

Extra long day at work with a meeting to cover & two stories to write — then the added drama of discovering that we have GIGANTIC cockroaches roaming the newsroom. 😮 We really hadn’t noticed.

We all had to get everything up off the floor before leaving tonight so the cleaning crew could thorough vacuum and then the exterminator could do his thing. I found some weird stuff under my desk.

The one roach that appeared on the ceiling today was a job for a woman from advertising, she was fearless, she climbed up on the desk next to the printer armed with a big trash can and a magazine. Whack! Whack! Horror. Roach was mad.

Cockroach wound up on the floor trying to scamper away, but advertising lady (they’re quite aggressive) stomped on him – STOMP STOMP STOMP crunch — Eww. Then she picked up the crumpled remains.
