Our Daily Thread 4-16-15

Good Morning!

On this day in 1705 Queen Anne of England knighted Isaac Newton.

In 1818 the U.S. Senate ratified Rush-Bagot amendment which formed an unarmed U.S.-Canada border.

In 1854 San Salvador was destroyed by an earthquake.

In 1947, in Texas City, TX, the French ship Grandcamp, carrying ammonium nitrate fertilizer, caught fire and blew up. The explosions and resulting fires killed 576 people.

And in 1982 Queen Elizabeth proclaimed Canada’s new constitution in effect. The act severed the last colonial links with Britain.

  1. I spotted that Cardinal right away.
Even back in 1705 they were knighting men for things beside slaying dragons. ?
    Good morning everyone.

Last night, Pastor Steve’s rabbit was about the Baptist doctrine of eternal security of the believer.

Yep, more rain over the next few days and into weekend. I saw on Twitter that today is Blah,Blah Blah Day. That sums up our weather. How did they know?

I have been wondering where several of the blog peeps sre. Annms, IBNO,Makeitman, Kbells, Drivesguy, and all others.

  3. Well Chas are you going to share Pastor Steve’s opinion with us. I am a little fuzzy on that because the church school I attended was I dependent t Methodist and adherred to Methodist doctrine until I was in about 7th grade and a new pastor came and brought in new teachers from Bob Jones University and we became more Baptist like . One teacher ended the argument by saying “Believe that you can’t and live like you can”. It has worked for me that way since 9th or 10th grade

  4. I’ll give it a try with scripture later Kim. Suffice it for now that I believe that If a person is Born Again, how can ,he get unborn? My parents belonged the Church of God (Cleveland, Tenn.) They believed that a person could be saved, then lost if he backslid, like going to picture shows, dancing, smoking, drinking, etc. May day was saved three times. (Which is contrary to Hebrews 6:6.)

We are saved by faith, not works. If works doesn’t save us, what works unsave us?
But he spent thirty minutes on the subject. Most of that time was discussing the reasons for believing the opposite. That is, you can be saved then lost again.

But your teacher’s admonition was wise.
Pastor Steve mentioned that a saved person might sin, but he can never enjoy it. If you enjoy your sin, you need to rethink your salvation experience.

  5. I don’t have time for this. But the subject was akin to the Rabbit about “Is Suicide the Unpardonable Sin?”. Of course not. The idea that it is comes from the false belief that we must pay for all unconfessed, therefore unforgiven, sin. That false belief comes from Roman Catholic tradition of confession – penetrance -, forgiveness.

  6. I will take that statement Chas. No need to go further. Unfortunately, I have been remotely touched by suicide lately. I think a person who takes their own life cannot be in their “right mind”. Sort of “not guilty by reason of insanity”. I hate the trite little sayings about suicide being “selfish” or a “permanent solution to a temporary problem”. A person who is so desperate they take their own life isn’t trying to hurt anyone else. They are trying to end a pain that is so great they cannot …what word to use? They cannot live with it, I guess, is the best way so say it.
I have been honest in that I have dealt with depression on and off most of my life. I have taken medication and I have been lucky enough to always go to Christian Therapists. My joke is that I bought and paid for this personality and it’s as good as money can buy. I know there are people out there who don’t like me. I don’t understand why. My ex-husband told me it was because I was intimidating. If they only knew the jello inside! I am older and wiser now and I realize there are people I don’t like. We can’t all live a fairy tale life.

  7. Janice, this one is for you. My taxes were filed and I think we received our refund around the first of March.
I do not work with people who think that way. Guy I Work With mailed off his extension yesterday ( Actually I wrote the checks out, he signed them and I mailed them,, but lets not quibble). He has a theory that the IRS can only do so many audits a year and if he files an extension and pays in October they won’t audit him. Not a bet I am willing to take.
Young Man I Work With –My work child. Filed an extension yesterday as well. Another guy asked me to go by the post office on my way home yesterday. He had a trailer attached to his truck and didn’t want to have to pull it through the tight parking lots at either post office.
All my life I have seen news stories of people lined up at the post office to get their tax returns posted by midnight on the 15th. Well I got to the post office at about 5 or 10 after 5pm and ALL the mail on the Eastern Shore had been gathered up and the trucks had left.
Luckily, the other guy didn’t have an extension to mail. It was just a “business privilege tax” that was due. There were other people at the post office who were panicked.

OK. I am off to put together marketing packages on properties for sale? Anyone want anything?

  8. ….then this came through to me. I have seen it before…posted in a therapist’s office.
Everyone will go through some hard times at some point. Life isn’t easy. Just something to think about. Did you know the people that are the strongest are usually the most sensitive? Did you know the people who exhibit the most kindness are the first to get mistreated? Did you know the ones who take care of others all the time are usually the ones who need it the most? Did you know the three hardest things to say are I love you, I’m sorry, and help me? Sometimes just because a person looks happy, you have to look past their smile to see how much pain they may be in.

  9. Janice and Nancy stopped by. But so far, it’s just Kim and me..
The “three hardest things” vary by person. For me, it’s “Please help me”.
Just something about that. Makes me feel insufficient. And I don’t like to impose or take advantage.
    I’m sure I miss a lot.

  11. Husband just left for work. He got to sleep late this morning. When he went in the bathroom this morning to get his shower, Miss Bosley pushed open the door and jumped into the tub and started playing in it to claim it as hers. She has not done that before as far as claiming the tub before someone gets in it. You see how husband lost territory for being away a few days! We laughed at that silly cat! She refuses to take a shower even though she now owns the tub.

  12. Husband truly has quit smoking. He said he’d have to make it through tax season to say he’d really quit. He said the last few days were tough, but you have to do what you have to do. Wow! So different from his former attitude 🙂

  13. A good way to entertain cats is the throw a ping pong ball into the (empty, dry) tub. I used to find lizards in there, including one just hanging on the shower curtain, when Annie was in her lizard-catching phase. But Annie always accompanies me into the bathroom for my morning shower, she lies on my T-shirt or sweats to wait for me.

The perseverance of the saints, as we call it, is among the foundational doctrines to orthodox Protestantism. Roman Catholics and in-and-out when it comes to salvation, depending on if they’ve had a good day or not (heaven help me if that were the case!).

But because it is God who saves us (we don’t/can’t save ourselves through works or otherwise), he is faithful to complete the work he began in us. We were dead, but now we are alive because of what Christ has done for us. It is finished.

Self-examination, though, is very much in order during times of disobedience — but if we are believers, we’ll be miserable, for the most part, during those periods. If we’re not miserable & none of it bothers us much, as Chas suggested, then it’s time to evaluate our own status with regard to salvation itself.

  14. I tend to file my taxes semi-late (mid to late March) but that’s mainly because I’m such a procrastinator. Usually it’s the people who owe money who literally put it off to the final days, or at least that’s what I was told. That makes sense, who wants to send Uncle Sam a check sooner than they absolutely have to?

I checked the “where’s my refund” site last night and my returns have been “received,” should get the refunds within 21 days. Yay.

My school board meeting went long, I didn’t finish filing until 9:30 or so last night. This ongoing story and controversy has been a little awkward for me to cover as most of the people I’m having to write about (on both sides of what has become a very bitter dispute filled with charges & counter-charges) are long-time sources I know and have worked with on many other issues going back years now.

  15. The filers who owe the most wait until the last minute. One yesterday had a tremendous bill to pay. The early filers are usually to receive a refund. Husband and two others were at the office until midnight.

  16. I used to like getting refunds until someone reminded me that it was my money, so I should have had it already. Another friend said he looks at owing taxes when you file as paying back a zero-interest loan.

  17. I know that ideally (according to all the financial gurus) it’s supposed to all work out as being even at the end of the tax year (not owing, not being owed anything). But refunds are still kind of nice, especially at this time of year.

  18. When Mr. P and I were dating he was at my house one morning for us to go somewhere. I received a text message from someone telling me that they “enjoyed last night” and went into more detail. I showed it to Mr. P and then then replied they had the wrong person.
I also had the same thing happen on FB Messenger when we were dating. A guy I used to work with and who worked on computers sent a message to a Kim that he had had a date with the night before. We ended up exchanging good natured banter about it because I had just started dating Mr P and they have the same name too.

  19. WIND!!!! Blowing about 50mph here. The forecast shows snow for tonight. We might see a few flakes as they fly past. My apple tree is in full bloom. 😦 Yesterday, I was returning from a transfer, driving up the south side of the mountain. I commented to my partner about how beautiful it was there. It is hard to enjoy spring where I live as it is usually very windy and brown. We have to wait for summer rains to get the green grass. I am envious of those of you have “April showers and May flowers”.

  21. An early 😦 :

Kbells pointed out recently that most TV shows now have to have at least one gay character. Even my beloved Call the Midwife has introduced a gay character. One of the new midwives is a secret lesbian.

One episode did show illustrate the point that hatred against homosexuals was cruel & heartless, with an episode about a young, secretly gay, married man caught in a “honey trap” (I think that’s what they called it). He could have gone to prison for two years. The local people were hateful to him & his poor wife, who hadn’t known about his inclinations.

  22. Oops. I meant to take out “show” & leave “illustrate”.

A while back, in talking about Emily & Forrest, it was mentioned how young she is, & that part of a boy’s need for a father is that mothers tend to be more over-protective, not letting them be as physically adventurous as they should be.

I think I pointed out that Emily will be 26 in May. She was 21 when she had Forrest, an age that used to be considered “normal” for having a child.

Concerning the other matter, Emily lets Forrest do boy stuff, & doesn’t get bent of out of shape if he gets very dirty or gets a little hurt by falling from his bike or whatnot. She encourages him to be active & adventurous in play. They go on hikes quite often, too. It’s his father who is the over-protective one.

Recently, R bought Forrest a new pair of sneakers, then told him not to get them dirty. Yeah, right. 🙂

  23. Karen (3:50), sounded like last night’s Criminal Minds also centered on a gay character (I caught only bits and pieces of it as I was busy getting my story filed). I figured this will be the year for it, after all of the gay marriage victories — writers will be eager to capitalize on the newsy aspect (and join the effort to help educate those viewers not yet on board, I suppose).

An advocacy group for gays in entertainment also released a statement this week condemning Disney for not including gay and transgender characters in their productions. So get ready for Cinderella with a twist. 😉

I do think some of this will play itself out as a phase, but for now we’ll be seeing a lot of it.

  24. mumsee, I remember reading some years ago that many disability applications are turned down the first time, not necessarily the 2nd time.

There’s been a huge jump in people going onto disability nationwide, though, so I think that’s part of the pressure to turn down folks. But Mike’s condition seems like it would certainly qualify.

  25. It turns out, if you work outside of the country, you have to work your way back into the system. So, if he works in the country for the next five years, he would definitely qualify due to the severity of the RA.

  26. Mumsee, Ouch! All those rules and regulations which make it so hard for the little guy. I know someone who was born with a very serious heart condition, only alive today thanks to the wonder of modern medicine. He can’t get disability. He tries to work, but a regular job puts too much strain on his heart. He usually ends up in the hospital after a week or two on a new job. He had to quit a college course because they wouldn’t allow someone with his condition to continue, but he can’t get disability.

  27. However, the guy who was using our car to run meth through the Pacific Northwest was able to get disability. As did his wife. They had not worked at regular jobs other than drugs in years.

  28. Kim, as I’ve mentioned, I have relatives who suffered from serious depression. One is an aunt by marriage, who comes from a family with a history of mental illness. She attempted suicide more than once. I was almost the same age as one of her children and we were all very close, so I remember what it was like. She finally stabilized with medication. She said later that she had been convinced at the time of her attempts that the whole family would be better off without her. One of her siblings, who was bipolar, committed suicide a few years ago. My aunt said afterwards that now she realized how terrible suicide was to those left behind. So, when people speak of the selfishness of suicide, it is not always those who have no knowledge of mental illness. She said it without resentment, just in simple acknowledgement that the hurt to those who live should be deep enough to be a deterrent. I can think of a few cases where suicide was pure selfishness – one case involved a pastor of a church which friends attended. He was caught in an affair and killed himself to avoid the public disgrace. Suicide certainly isn’t the unforgiveable sin, but the reasons and motives for it vary widely.

Back is feeling somewhat better now and I had a good trip. She ended up buying me a carryon bag with spinner wheels that will hold my new sewing machine. Exciting!

  30. Good evening. Not sure anyone missed me, but I’ve been out of town 2 1/2 days and have not read the old threads. I just skimmed this one. Kim, this caught my eye: ” I hate the trite little sayings about suicide being “selfish” or a “permanent solution to a temporary problem”.

Suicide is at the very least self-centered. It may not be selfish per se (there’s a difference between selfish and self-centered), but it is definitely self-centered. And I personally know of two suicides who left notes intended to deeply hurt someone left behind . . . so it can indeed be extremely selfish as well.
