On this day in 1763 it was reported, by the Boston Gazette, that the first piano had been built in the United States. The instrument was named the spinet and was made by John Harris. 

In 1830 the “Tom Thumb”, the first locomotive built in America, raced a horse on a nine-mile course. The horse won when the locomotive had some mechanical difficulties. 

In 1947 the United States Air Force was established as a separate military branch by the National Security Act. 

And in 1965 the first episode of “I Dream of Jeannie” was shown on NBC-TV.

  3. Good evening Jo. I’ve been up, but had to do the Thursday morning chores, like taking the trash out. & breakfast.
    I was thinking while having breakfast. Except for your pictures, I would still be thing PNG was all jungle and insects.
    That from the WW II stories.

  6. I love all-things-math and still do casting out nines sometimes, just for fun.
    One of my favorite high-school memories is of learning the pattern for making a square grid of any odd-number of squares so that every row, column, and diagonal adds up to the same number. And then figuring out the formula for what that number would be based on the number of square in each direction. Anyone else ever do that?

  8. Thanx Aj, but I’m not smart enough to figure that stuff out.
    It may be that I could if I downloaded it and worked with it a while.
    But the system I know has worked for several years.
    I know there are different systems.
    To the ancients, 10,000 was the ultimate number. The head of the library at Alexandria once told a Pharaoh that he had fifty ten thousand books. We would say 500,000 books.
    They didn’t calculate that far. And the Bible, somewhere, says ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands.

  9. Casting out nines is just a fun little exercise. Some find it easy, others don’t. Some use it others don’t. They teach other tools as well for getting correct answers and finding mistakes.

  10. I just worked up a sweat helping buy office printer paper and getting it from Office Depot into the supply room. I bought other supplies yesterday from Sam’s.

    And I thought casting out nines meant throwing cats out since they have nine lives! 🙂

    If anyone needs things to put in an Operation Christmas Child gift box, Office Depot has some nice pencils and other school supplies on sale that would be nice to include.

  15. And toes! Ten toes, 10 fingers. What else do you need to do math?

    I clicked off that 9 site abruptly after I saw the word integers and all those NUMBERS. Arrggh.

    Algebra was an elective when I was in high school and I remember that my best girlfriend and I decided it sounded very grownup and intellectual — so we signed up for it. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

    Except I’d never been good at even regular math and when my mom (who also wasn’t very number-oriented) found out I’d signed up for algebra she flipped. “What were you thinking!?”

    I wound up barely getting through it, and I mean barely. We had to find a retired school teacher in town to help tutor me just to make that happen. 🙂 I remember she was quite old had a gigantic house with lots and lots of windows. We washed her windows as barter for the sessions.

    I am back, did you miss me? I did not think so. Anyway, we had some delicious ice cream for breakfast. Homemade ice cream is good and this was the best batch ever. Well, there is a tiny bit left for elevensies.

  18. Math is fun for some people. Especially when you use a calculator. In one position I held I joked that I would burn up my calculator because I was so fast on it. Ha! One day I did! What is really impressive is those who learn to do the calculator with one hand while writing with the other. I am purely a rightie so I never mastered that.

  31. Casting out nines is as simple as this example. 9+9=17
    If you “remove” all the 9s or sums of 9s on both sides of the equation and don’t get the same number, your answer cannot be correct. In the example, drop the two 9s to the left of the equation (end up with 0) and add 1+7 to get 8 on the right, resulting in 0=8 and know that answer is wrong.
    OTOH, 21+85=106 results in 7=7 (on the left, 1+8=9 so drop those digits and the remaining 2+5=7; on the right, 1+0+6=7). It doesn’t guarantee your answer is right but it can guarantee that it’s wrong.

  38. I don’t like rats much, but it was sort of hard to see him stuck like that.

    People understandably didn’t want to (ew) touch him, though. Something about rats … Even the woman who got him off the rail did so with a very quick & cursory push, like she wanted to limit the contact as much as possible.

    Nice to see him run off so happily to continue his scavenging lifestyle in L.A.’s subway system. And he’ll probably know to stay clear of the escalator from now on.

  40. Donna, I love lavender and grew it here until one year the cold weather killed it.

    I am not good at multi-tasking. I’ve been trying to help my friend with some shopping before she has surgery, Monday, and also spending some time with her. Also, still working on Christian Library International dinner plans for next week. I have totally fallen behind in getting ready for our trip tomorrow. I did find a few new clothes for the conference when I was shopping for my friend. I never made it to get my haur cut. 😦 I hope I chose the right priorities according to what God wants. I need another day and so does husband as he is trying to finalize his work before our trip. Prayers, if you have a moment, are appreciated.
