On this day in 1664 the Dutch surrendered New Amsterdam to the British, who then renamed it New York. 

In 1892 an early version of “The Pledge of Allegiance” appeared in “The Youth’s Companion.” 

In 1945, in Washington, DC, a bus equipped with a two-way radio was put into service for the first time. 

In 1952 the Ernest Hemingway novel “The Old Man and the Sea” was published. 

And in 1966 NBC-TV aired the first episode of “Star Trek.”

  6. Good morning, all. Congrats, Karen O, for getting 100 on the weekend thread. 🙂

    Today is looking dull outside, rather drizzly.

    We started doing a John Maxwell workbook study at church last night. The title is Talent is not Enough. Has anyone here done it? Are you involved in a Bible study or Christian book study? If so, which one?

    I see where Ricky Weaver won the NCAA contest again. But the Gamecocks and Boilermakers won.
    SC has Georgia and Purdue has Notre Dame. It’s going to be rough next Saturday.

    I enjoyed the 2nd video, it helped to wake me up, so thanks for that AJ. 🙂 I’ve had 2 sips of coffee. I need lots more.

    Yesterday and last night were very warm & muggy (my house was still 78 degrees when I got up this morning at 7 a.m., so I have windows open and fans going trying to cool it down some before I have to close everything up and leave for work.

    Bu! !!!!

    We did seemingly get a smattering of rain overnight or early this morning, the streets are wet … Joy!

    I guess this is a little wetness from the hurricane down michelle’s way in old Mexico.

    But this heat & humidity can move on quickly as far as I’m concerned. We don’t “do” humidity in coastal California.

  14. Well, Donna, I kind of agree with you. Seems like if a person has a one hundred percent success rate on one of those pickings, it ought to count for something. But, football is rather a closed community so I understand.

    With this *rain* we’re getting this morning, I predict I we’ll have to do one of our favorites in the news biz — a WEATHER story!

    With lots of pics of wet people walking their wet dogs along the beach. And kids jumping in puddles!

  20. Interesting article at the NY Times on power and coldheartedness. Maybe one reason why career politicians get so out of touch with ordinary people?

    “We found that for those participants who were induced to experience feelings of power, their brains showed virtually no resonance with the actions of others; conversely, for those participants who were induced to experience feelings of powerlessness, their brains resonated quite a bit. In short, the brains of powerful people did not mirror the actions of other people. And when we analyzed the text of the participants’ essays, using established techniques for coding and measuring themes, we found that the more power that people expressed, the less their brains resonated. Power, it appears, changes how the brain itself responds to others.”

  23. I have a biblical question for Cheryl or anyone else who knows. I am reading a book for review that speaks of David living in King Saul’s palace for a time as an armour bearer and the book says that is when David killed Goliath. I don’t remeber it being quite like that, but maybe I missed some of the story?

  25. Thank you, Chas. Unless I have the Bible in front of me, I can’t remember story sequence or details. I remembered David playing the harp for Saul but just to mention he was an armour bearer without the harp was throwing me. I think the harp was the bigger part of that story.

I find the chronology in 1 & 2 Samuel confusing at times, since it seems like some things are told us out of sequence, such as David killing Goliath, which comes in the book after when he is harpist. I think Saul would have recognized him when he showed up and killed the giant. Instead, Saul has to ask who he is.

  27. That is correct Peter. In fact, I almost responded to Janice that it wasn’t so. It is told that David came upon the battle while bring food to his brothers. And in I Sam. 17:: Saul asks Abner “Whose son is that?”
    The chronology is confusing. But I have never concerned myself about it.

  28. I remembered it the way you guys related it, and had skipped over the armour bearing part, or maybe in teaching the children that part was not brought out. Anyway, thank you for your responses.
    When I read Christian books for review, I like to be sure the biblical stories are accurate when used to make an illustration.

  33. Good Monday…I am so thrilled for Donna (and my daughter in Pasadena)…well, all those in CA who are receiving rain today!! I hope you continue to receive enough to replenish the land!
    It has been cloudy and raining off and on today…not much rain…just a few sprinkles here and there…loving the touch of autumn in the air.
    Concerning the acquaintance I spoke of a couple days ago…I saw on FB shortly after she messaged me, that she was going out to eat with a friend…a place that is not exactly inexpensive. I am not close friends with her…she knows I am a follower of Christ and I think that is why she told me what she told me…I’m waiting upon the Lord…if He leads me to take her groceries or whatever else…then that is what I shall do…thanks for your prayers and insights….I just love you guys!! 🙂

  40. Good night everyone (thought the night is still young here). Alas, our rain was brief — but magical I noticed that Drudge referred to it as a “miracle” and it almost was, considering how dry and parched we’ve been.

    After it stopped, the day turned sultry, very hot and very muggy, still cloudy. And as I mentioned, we’re spoiled and don’t tolerate humidity with any kind of grace out here.

    So we’re all complaining now. 😉

    Ah, but the rain was nice while it lasted. And it left big, standing dollop drops/puddles of water all over my Jeep — since I’d had it waxed last week for the very first time since I bought it in 2008. It gets very little love from me normally.
