Our Daily Thread 9-4-14

Good Morning!

On this day in 0476 Romulus Augustulus, the last emperor of the western Roman Empire, was deposed when Odoacer proclaimed himself King of Italy.

In 1781 Los Angeles, CA, was founded by Spanish settlers.

In 1825 New York Governor Clinton ceremoniously emptied a barrel of Lake Erie water in the Atlantic Ocean to consummate the “Marriage of the Waters” of the Great Lakes and the Atlantic.

In 1885 The Exchange Buffet opened in New York City. It was the first self-service cafeteria in the U.S.

In 1917 the American expeditionary force in France suffered its first fatalities in World War I.

And in 1953 the New York Yankees became the first baseball team to win five consecutive American League championships. 🙂

  1. Good morning everyone. I got recruited for AWANA last night.
I knew, but forgot, what AWANA means.
I think I will be a story teller.
    I can tell stories.
I’ve been telling them to Elvera for 57 years. 😉

  2. Good morning. All is quiet at my house. I’ve been awake since 4:30…after finally falling asleep around one… Sleep is an elusive thing for me these days…

Hubby leaves this morning for a weekend of dove hunting. Connie is coming to stay with us while he’s away. It is so nice to have her company when he’s gone–it keeps me from getting lonely.

  3. At one time, they didn’t allow wind instruments on the Opry. Marty Robbins (I forgot the song) broke the rule.
There are some good selections in the following 12. If you like the genre.

  4. Good Morning! That sort of photo we call a “nostril shot” 😛 Mouse has a nice clean nose!
Paul and Hannah started their volunteer work with AWANA’s last night….Paul had to help with games…he said he was supposed to jump around like a bunny while the kids threw a ball at him….that was not what he was expecting when he signed up to help!

  5. AJ, while scrolling down on that cute Mouse picture, I found another creature in the frame. If you crop the picture to show the part underneath her mouth to include the dark areas of her whiskers base (they appear like eyes), and her neck rolls appear like a mouth, and her overhanging whiskers either look like eyebrows or scant hair. The cropped photo looks a lot like a Muppet!

  6. I was asked to help serve food to the kids and parents before they do the Team Kids program at church. I did not do it last night, but I will be considering if I want to add that to my other responsibilities. Team Kids is new at our church. I do not know anything about it, but guess it is similar to AWANA. It seems to be drawing a lot of people in on Wed. night. I had been to WMU in the morning, and needed to get some things done later at the office so I did not go back to Wed. evening programs at the church.

  7. We have Moe the Cat. She was adopted into a household of 3 males and was supposed to be a male cat, thus the reason she is named Moe. She hates me. I don’t like her much either.
The problem with kittens is that they turn into cats. God makes kittens cute so that you will want one and fall in love with it. If you get one early enough by the time they turn into a cat you already love the stinking thing!

  8. The cat who is gone most of the time because he is a boy and was not here for his operation, was growling at my rat terrier this morning. Just out of reach of his leash (can’t be in a pen until his wound heals) and causing all sorts of mayhem. He also was sitting in my camp chair. He is not sitting there now and not snarling at my dog.

  9. I just finished reading Blood Feud by Edward Klein. An interesting book. I recommend it if you want to understand current politics. It seems that the feud is a driver in much that is happening. I wasn’t aware of the nature of Bill and Hillary’s health. Nor the extent of Chelsea’s involvement in this.
As for Obama, a quote from a lecture Valerie Jarrett made to staff: “The president has every intention of keeping his team intact after he leaves office. He has a desire to control the political dialogue and accomplish a progressive agenda. He means to have a major impact for a long time. He is not going to retire or leave the stage after his term. ….He wants to keep his team together.”

I agree with the Clintons on one point: “…….It’s making Obama nuts, because he’s no longer running the political machinery of the party. He’s not running anything. The Clintons have made Obama irrelevant in the party. Obama isn’t going to have a say about the next nominee. In fact, the Clintons are making sure that he has very little to say about anything.”

Next election? Anybody but Hillary. That is, except for an Obama person.
Romney or Ryan may not be good presidents. But they will be better than the alternative

  10. All four of my grandchildren in youngest daughter’s family just signed up for another year of AWANA. It is the youngest one’s first time and I know she will enjoy it. I know my children enjoyed it when they attended. More importantly, they learned a lot of scripture. It is also a great place to invite friends with no church.

I have led a kid’s club at a church and been involved in those things. I miss the interaction with the children. I am grateful for all those who help out. No matter how small you think your contribution may be, it is appreciated. Your influence is so important in a society that is letting more and more bad influences into children’s lives. Praying is also so very important for these leaders and the little ones.

  11. Chas, and what a crack team this administration has put together, right? 🙄

This should go on the political thread instead I suppose, but one FB friend posted a pic of the president the other day with this pre-written text: “Why we vehemently defend President Obama: He is subjected to a level of disrespect, treachery, betrayal and sabotage from within that no other president has ever experienced. Still, he succeeds and his success makes American lives better.”

    So go team.

My, what l-o-n-g whiskers Mouse has!

  13. Success? At what?

AWANA= Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed. I was never in it, though my husband was. I have helped out in other club programs, but never AWANA. Growing up, our churches usually had it at the same time as prayer meeting, if they had it at all, and we went to prayer meeting as a family. I have a hunch that AWANA is largely responsible for few people under 60 being involved in prayer meetings today; the last couple generations didn’t grow up attending and never got in the habit.

  14. Donna,

So what, you’re friend doesn’t remember the Bush years, or the behavior of the Obama sycophants/liberals during his 2 terms?

I guess the party mascots are an accurate portrayal of the members after all. One side doesn’t forget, like a good elephant. The other side can’t remember that they acted like their mascot so they continuing braying like good little ……. well, you know. 🙂

  15. I have seen that fb post, too. Then we hear, ” Well,l two wrongs don’t make a right”. I don’t like any of the disrespect. It sets a bad tone. I have no problem stating what is wrong with policy, though, or stating an opinion. I do think it should be in a way to not demean the office. Of course, as someone pointed out—now that presidents seem to have no problem being on comedy shows, it is easy to forget they are above all that.

  16. Argh I am so tired of having a hundred and fifty million people look over every single thing I do and make changes and question this and that and everything else. and then have the receptionist tell me what I have to do.
Give me a job. Let me do it. If you have any questions come directly to me. Micro-management?????
