In 1964 Little League Baseball Incorporated was granted a Federal Charter unanimously by the United States Senate and House of Representatives.
And in 1985 the All-Star Game, televised on NBC-TV, was the first program broadcast in stereo by a TV network

I am at the office this morning. Did not get on the web until now although I have been up and at em for awhile. I have not had coffee or tea so I am dragging still. Husband has almost finished reading Passing Strangers to me on our drive into work. It is such a good book. Husband seemed to get a few sniffles so I know the story has touched his heart. I know someone here is rewriting a good book lately, but is anyone reading a good book, other than the Bible, these days?

He’s some type of rodent. He wouldn’t come out any further so I could identify him. He kept me company while I was fishing. I kept hearing him scratching and digging but couldn’t figure out where it was coming from. Then I found him like this a couple feet away. He is cute.

Question: Where do fruit flies come from? We haven’t had any fruit flies around. But we have some bananas that are overripe. And a bunch of fruit flies have shown up all of a sudden.
The Merle Haggard clip is worth watching if you like country. A couple of surprises.

My friend who I kept the cats for brought up fruit flies the other day. I said they are from the bananas. I told her I use to bring bananas to work until a coworker complained that we got fruit flies in the office from the bananas. An apple a day keeps the fruit flies away!

Chas, pretty sure you would have bought bananas with fruit fly eggs on them. We’ve had awful problems with fruit flies some years.

Chas- Two suggestions: get cover for the fruit and/or put sugar and vinegar in a small container next to the fruit. The flies are attracted to the combination and drown themselves. It works in our kitchen anyway.

Eeeeeeeee! Cutest peek-a-boo critter picture ever. 🙂 🙂 Even though I’m not a fan of rodents in general. But as long as it’s not a rat … It’s not a rat, is it? I don’t think it’s a rat. His nose is too short.
Fruit flies have been a problem for me this summer — I remember reading that they tend to breed & hang out in sink drains. So I guess it’s important to pour bleach or whatever down your drains periodically. We’ve also had issues with them at work for years. Most of us eat at our desks or in the lunch room and it’s so annoying when you open a container of food and suddenly there’s a fruit fly right in your face.
I seriously need to wake myself up this morning, I feel so groggy. I am drinking some coffee. That should help. But I have 4 stories to get done before the weekend. Did one yesterday on a local public memorial being planned for later this month to honor Zamperini in the town where he grew up.
I spoke with a few people who attended last Sunday’s invitation-only service at Hollywood Pres and was told Jolie was among the speakers. It was all hush-hush and the family was adamant about no media. So while we knew where and when it was we honored that (though we had at least one tv station calling us asking for the particulars — which my editor didn’t give them — and apparently some crews got wind of it anyway and were cruising around the church but did not cause a disruption).
But people will appreciate a public event that will be open for everyone. They’re having it at the football stadium of Louie’s high school alma mater (the stadium was named after him some years ago). Someone I interviewed said he’d been able to see much of the film already at the studio where they’re now doing the editing.

I was glad to hear he’d seen much of the film in advance since he died just months before it’s release, so long anticipated (especially when you consider early plans for a film on his life go back literally decades — Tony Curtis was in line to play Louie in the film originally).

Those critters are always cute—until they ruin your yard or garden. I assume it is a ground squirrel or gopher. We had one that was living under a front concrete step. My husband had to get rid of the critter and then redo under the step. They can be very damaging, as can all rodents, no matter how cute.
You can get products to get rid of drain flies. Those little containers for salad oil are good for getting them trapped. They only need a small hole to get into the container and then are trapped.

No, it’s not a ground hog. He’s much too small. And whatever built that nest was full grown. Since he fills the hole, I’m guessing he is full grown too. there were small holes like that all over the bank. Some type of mouse is my guess.

Donna, are you familiar with the bottles that are used for oil and vinegar (one in each)? It’s a tiny little glass bottle with a metal lid, and the lid has a very small hole in the top that you can pour vinegar (or oil) out of. Well, the good news and bad news is that if you use them, fruit flies will find the vinegar bottle, make their way into the tiny opening at the top, and not make their way out again. That makes the bottles of limited usefulness for salad dressing if you have fruit flies, but it makes the bottles into excellent fruit fly traps. Just put some apple cider vinegar into the bottle and ignore it. If you see you have a couple dozen dead fruit flies in it, then empty it, rinse it, and refill it.

Speaking of Dixie cups, or actually Solo cups . . . if you don’t think Christians ought to drink, you might want to skip this post.
At our family reunion six weeks or so ago, my sister brought several bottles of various fruit wines her husband had made before he died (passion fruit, plum, and something else). Most of my family are non-drinkers, so those of us who think it is OK to drink went outside discreetly with our water cups. That would be the three youngest of us and my husband. We had no wish to offend anyone, but I guess we became the person in those testimonies “I was so far gone I would sneak out of family gatherings to get something to drink.” Anyway, we shared a bottle of plum wine, and it was a high alcohol content, and while none of us got drunk we definitely could “feel it.” My younger brother told us that actually people are considered pretty “far gone” when they are drinking out of Solo cups, so we had some good jokes about that.
The next day some of us were leaving, and my sister didn’t get a chance to split the second bottle (a different variety), so she emptied two water bottles and poured a little of the wine in each and then sent my husband and me back to our hotel with the bottle. And at that point we simply had to ask whether drinking out of a water bottle was a step “up” or a step “down” in terms of drinking.
A few days ago my sister told me she had sent me an early Christmas present, and she got the same thing for our little brother. We opened the box, and there in it were four wine glasses . . . made to look like red Solo cups only with the wine glass shape. Very, very cute and absolutely hilarious as a memorial to that afternoon of sharing a bottle of wine. (My sister wrote in the note with it that the four of us sharing her husband’s wine was her favorite memory of the reunion.)

Bananas turn brown in the fridge. They will in the freezer, too, but still make for a good banana bread, muffins or chocolate covered bananas on a stick. Of course, you better take the peel off for the latter. 🙂

The skin turns brown in the fridge and looks really unappealing, but the fruit does actually stay fine and doesn’t get overripe as fast. I never put them in the fridge because the brown skin is so unappealing, but you can. Once you peel off the brown skin, the banana looks normal.

Regarding fruit flies: a number of years ago, I began using a Mango shampoo. About two weeks later, I had bugs living in my scalp. I thought I had lice and treated for them, but they were still alive. I finally caught one of the bugs and took it to an exterminator and asked if they knew what it was. You guessed it–I had fruit flies!!! They were attracted by the very fruity shampoo. It was an embarrassing and disgusting experience. But, as soon as I switched shampoos, they went away!
