Good Morning!

Today’s header photo is from Mumsee, and was taken by one of the nestlings. 🙂

On this day in 1776 the American Declaration of Independence was read aloud to Gen. George Washington’s troops in New York.

In 1872 the doughnut cutter was patented by John F. Blondel.

In 1877 Alexander Graham Bell, Gardiner Greene Hubbard, Thomas Sanders and Thomas Watson formed the Bell Telephone Company.

In 1943 American and British forces made an amphibious landing on Sicily.

And in 1971 the United States turned over complete responsibility of the Demilitarized Zone to South Vietnamese units.

Quote of the Day

“Books were this wonderful escape for me because I could open a book and disappear into it, and that was the only way out of that house when I was a kid.”

Today is Ottorino Respighi’s birthday. And who better to perform some of his work than Pavarotti?

And on this day in 1991 President George H. W. Bush presented a National Medal of Art to Roy Acuff. Here’s Roy with some friends.

  1. Good morning! I’ve been busy getting ready for our trip to the Cayman’s. We leave Saturday.

Becca’s attending tennis camp this week. L. made up with her sixth and seventh grade best friend (yay!).

  2. That’s a lovely bird photo by the nestling. Such a long beak on such a small bird.
Ann, so glad that her new son can come home with her son. I know that the paperwork can be quite a long process.

  3. Yes, lovely photo of the bird. I was noticing that long beak, too.

Hooray for adoptions and Forever Families! Congrats, Annms, for doing your part as Auntie.

Phone is struggling today. It says I am almost out of storage. Gotta see what I can dump or drop. I have not used Dropbox but maybe it is time to learn how.

  4. Good rendition of the Cannon Ball there. I know most of you don’t care for that genre, but I could listen to that -the twelve selections after the song- for a couple of hours. I did visit Roy and Bashful Brother Oswald doing “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” A Hank Williams song.

  5. So, is that a hummingbird? It looks like it with that long beak. I tried to get some pictures of hummingbirds at a feeder last night, but I was looking through a window so they didn’t turn out right, especially since I was using my non-HD phone.

  6. Just as the children do, the hummingbirds act differently at Mumsee’s. Hummingbirds are territorial and will fight another hummingbird for the feeder. Strangest thing, at Mumsee’s there would be 6 or 7 Hummingbirds sharing the same feeder. I’m telling you, weird things happen there. (But in a good way)

  7. Nestling picture! 🙂 Nice.

Have a good trip annms, rejoicing in the new nephew.

I’m back to work today, it felt good having a couple days off (and thus a long 4-day weekend). I needed that. I’ll be stuck at the computer through the morning, though, watching a coastal commission meeting (live) that’s taking place in Ventura, which is a ways (and a lot of traffic) from us — technology has made it so we don’t always have to drive to these things when all we’re reporting on is one item in what will be a long meeting. Hope my item comes up early.

  8. That pic was taken from about one and a half to three feet away. He has lots of pics with him holding his hand next to the feeder and the hummingbirds coming in. He wanted one to land on his hand but they didn’t.

  9. I am at the office now so I have better web access.

Bookshout had this book showing as free for Kindle:

When I got to the office, husband and I rushed out to find birthday cards to mail to our son since his 25th is on Sunday. I hope they will arrive on Saturday since we got them in for the late afternoon P O box pickup.

Radio just said it is 89 degrees here. Thankful for the A/C, but it has recharged Bosley’s batteries. She keeps going to new heights in our home. She has no respect for household treasures. Good thing we don’t have any 🙂 .

  12. I had my podiatrist appointment today (a toe that got injured back in March and wasn’t healing) and was told I probably injured a tendon and it will just take time. So that’s good news. Three doctor’s appointments and a prescription and some money on tape to wrap it, so overall it would have been better to wear slippers and not run into a dresser barefoot . . . but the pain isn’t that big a deal (mostly it’s tender and it hurts if I’m careless or I wear the wrong shoes), but I had wondered what was wrong with it, and it’s good to know.

  13. Nancyjill, I ordered a copy of the book for myself, but I haven’t yet done the i-pad version because I’m adding more photos and tweaking it a bit, but I’ll probably want to do it eventually. I also did a book of only photos through another site. If you want to see the link to either book, e-mail me and I can send it to the e-mail address you send me. (I can send links that let people look through the pages; I don’t mean buying a copy.)

  14. I’ve been at work all day, listening to a 3+ hour debate over the size of a U.S. flag on our coastline (and losing my live feed to the meeting right at a crucial time, prompting a quick desk/computer move). Ate lunch at my desk while writing the story, then had half a dozen voice mails to go through from the long weekend & a correction to write. Very long day.

Then I had to stop to buy a bag of dog food on the way home plus grab a few quick groceries — and a package with a fresh-cooked boneless turkey breast leaked all over me at the check-out counter, so it’s laundry for me tonight. Ugh.

It’s pretty warm out here these days, not “hot,” but just toasty enough to be mildly uncomfortable when you’re not in a/c. The open windows and my fans are cooling the house down OK tonight, though.

Cheryl, glad the toe isn’t anything serious.
