Good Morning!

Today’s header photo is from me.

On this day in 1799 Napoleon captured Jaffa Palestine.

In 1804 the Louisiana Purchase was divided into the District of Louisiana and the Territory of Orleans.

In 1910 the U.S. Congress passed an amendment to the 1907 Immigration Act that barred criminals, paupers, anarchists and carriers of disease from settling in the U.S.

In 1938 Herman Goering warned all Jews to leave Austria.

In 1942 the Germans began sending Jews to Auschwitz in Poland.

And in 1953 Dr. Jonas Salk announced a new vaccine that would prevent poliomyelitis.

And it’s the birthday of Pierre Boulez as well. So here he is conducting Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring”

And today is also Richard Tandy’s birthday.

  1. I don’t recognize it either, Janice. Aj will have to give us a lesson.
Thanks for the congrats. He will be much bigger before we meet, but God is good.

  2. Yep, a meerkat, undoubtedly from the zoo. They are sweet little creatures that live in colonies. I’ve seen them at the zoo, but they were first pupularized in “The Lion King.”

  3. Managed to get on the laptop for a few moments before Bosley had to come see what I was up to. I removed two more words from my article bringing it down to 450 words, the required number. It was 859 words when I began whittling and honing. I still need to work a little more on it. Hopefully it will be what’s needed and will bring in Spanish Bible donations for the prison community.

  4. I was just looking at the picture of young Mouse kitty and noticing her eyes look to be the same color as Bosley’s eyes. Mouse has those nicely sized smaller ears that I think are so cute on cats. Bosley’s ears have always seemed a bit large for her face (the better to hear my every move) but maybe she will eventually grow into them. I think Bosley is going to be a really large cat. She is really long.

AJ, do you know if Mouse will be large or petite? We need another Mouse picture sometime this week!

  5. Let Bosley do the editing. It won’t be pretty. But it’ll wind up being short.

Something(s) woke me up around 2 a.m. just chattering and screeching right outside my bedroom window. My initial guess is a raccoon or two going at it (fighting or mating, in nature it often sounds the same). I clapped my hands loudly and turned on the light. I heard one final “yeeep!” and then nothing, allowing me at least to go back to sleep. I don’t think they were actually on my porch (although I do keep a large open dog crate right there where Annie often spends part of the day outside) but they must have been right in between the porch where it drops off and the out-of-control bougainvillea bush.

I really do need to get these trees trimmed soon.

I took Tess to obedience class last night. She did well but another dog got too close and she lunged again. I just have to keep such a close eye on her to make sure she’s got a clear radius of space around her all the time. Except for Cowboy, she just does not play well with others. 😦

  6. I got to go watch a track meet yesterday. Our town does not have the right size track so we can’t host one, so I went to the nearest town that does. People ran around in circles. People jumped over stuff. People jumped in the sand. People jumped on a large mattress. People threw things. I had five people involved. I saw some of them. I did not see them all. Some of them won. Some of them didn’t. I sat there for many hours with four small children. It was exciting.

  7. Sounds fun mumsee.

Just listened to some YouTube videos and it was raccoons I think, they have the distinctive chatter — but it was so loud last night and bordered on screeching. Maybe it was just some young ones playing. Something’s also been getting under my house, so maybe I have a raccoon family now.

I remember a couple years ago hearing an opossum clawing its way up my porch post right outside my open bedroom window in the middle of the night. I told him to scat. He hissed. I closed the window and went back to bed.

Anyone familiar with rallycross racing? I have to interview someone about that today, we have a big race that’ll be staged in September at the port. I guess it’s pretty popular.

Cars going around in circles and jumping over stuff.

  8. Track meets are not very interesting to attend. The races are exciting, but there is usually a long break between them. Every Spring I volunteer to help out at our track meets. It’s a long three hours. This school has only had a track for three years. Prior to that the teams had to travel for all meets. The girl’s team was really good when I first started here, having won the sectionals for 4 years in a row. They had t-shirst promoting that with the slogan: “Undefeated at Home!”

  9. Donna, your comment “Let Bosley do the editing. It won’t be pretty. But it’ll wind up being short” reminded me of something. When I had foster kids, they weren’t allowed on my computer, though the kindergarten child whose name started with “h” was sometimes allowed to sit on my lap while I typed, and I’d tell her when I needed an “h” and she would type it.

One day I opened a book I was editing and it was gone, replaced by a few lines of random typing, largely z’s as I recall. I was so very, very happy I’d backed it up when I finished my work the night before! That was one thing that couldn’t happen with typewriters, a whole book disappearing because of the way you hit a few keys!

  11. So, as you know, R blew off Saturday & Monday, both long days for us. Now we come to Wednesday into Thursday, when he is supposed to pick up Forrest at 4, have him over night, & then Emily picks up Forrest at 1:30 on Thursday. Because of his car situation, Emily agreed to drop off Forrest this afternoon at 2 (to give herself time to study at the library before going to school).

I was relieved to finally be getting a break, especially because I’m getting a cold, & feel so tired.

So, of course, he’s cancelling again. He feels sick & thinks he might go to the ER. (I think I’ve previously mentioned that he is at least somewhat of a hypochondriac.) He could have gone this morning, if he didn’t sleep so late.

Meanwhile, Chrissy & I both also feel sick, but will be babysitting anyway.

Part of my anger & frustration over this (I burst into tears when I heard) is that even when I’m not actually babysitting, I don’t get a real break. So I’m mad at R for cancelling once again (meaning we’ll be babysitting a few hours tonight, then waking up & babysitting a few more hours), & I’m mad at the McKs for not being out when they said they would be. (If they were gone, Emily & Forrest would be upstairs, & I’d have a real break between babysitting times.)

    I’m just so tired.

  12. Yes, meerkat.

He lives at the zoo in Norfolk, VA.

He just sat there and watched the crowd go by, like he was waiting for food. 🙂

    Janice,

Petite is my guess. Our other cat is like Bosley, but much heavier. She always was long and tall. Mouse is shorter and smaller proportioned. She’s also insane. She makes me laugh. 🙂

  14. Karen, I suspect others have told you this, but you have every right to say, “No.” He is Ryan and Emily’s child and not your responsibility. Perhaps if you said “no” a few times they would both step up more. I know you are going to say you do it for Forrest but he’d survive. You are making this way too easy for both of them.

  15. I think a petite cat is nice because they always look a tad bit more like a kitten. Also, they may be more economical in that they don’t require as much food. I am amazed at how much Bosley can eat and still appear so lean and lanky (slinky). She runs it off! Last night my husband told me Bosley had turned him into the Statue of Liberty. He had his one hand held up high with his food in his hand trying to keep it away from Bosley. 🙂 He did have a similar pose but Lady Liberty does NOT have a mustache!

  16. Too tired to say much, but just wanted to let you know that the distribution of over 2000 bags of cement is done. Some snafus, but nothing too serious. We worked from 9 to 4 and were mostly finished. We still need to buy some more cement to take to the 4 other villages that we’ve chosen to help. (Much, MUCH smaller villages than ours is!) Thanks for praying.

  17. Karen, what Linda said has a lot of merit. It does not mean you have to be cruel, but he is their son, they chose to make him. You are the grandmother and you can help.

  18. Here’s your QOD: Show of hands, how many think the meerkat is cute, and how many are shuddering at the pointed nose and beady eyes?

It’s all in how you frame the question, right?

  19. Karen, I hear you. Thanks for sharing. I know you are strong and can and will do this, but sharing your frustration honestly helps a lot, I have been there and know that just been able to say it to someone safe means it is out and you can begin to go on. You are doing great!

  20. Cute, definitely.
Karen, what it comes down to is you doing what you need to do. Is God calling you to care for the little guy? Then He will give you what you need to do it even though it is hard and you can talk with us, as Jo said. If not, and you are stepping in where somebody else is supposed to be, He will let you struggle over it. We will be praying.

Mumsee, I am also going to a sports tournament tomorrow. They posted that they had extra seats, who wanted to go. This will be my one day off centre in months. The drive is beautiful through the highlands. Funny to think that the teens get out, but primary school teachers don’t

  23. I don’t care for the meer cat, but might like it better if I saw it in action. Somehow its ear in the picture bothered me. Maybe it is the angle and I am not seeing it right with my dim vision. To me it looks like its ear got chopped off leaving a hole in its head where the brains might spill out. Yeah, gross, I know. But the question was asked. But God designed it like that for a reason so who am I to complain. As for cats, I prefer Bosley, Mouse, Annie and the others belonging to folks on this site. Trying to remember who all has cats.Kbells, Kim, Mumsee, 6 Arrows, maybe Michelle and probably more. Do cats outnumber dogs on here?

  24. The meerkat is cute. But then, I’ve seen them in person, including their interactions with each other. One or two of them stand as sentry while the others work, and they trade off. They’re just little fellows.

  26. Well, Karen–it seems R is building the case against himself. I hope you are keeping a record of it all. We will keep praying for you. You will probably have to give another firm date for the people upstairs and then put everything outdoors that is left. Or they will have to rent a place to store it. Otherwise, I fear they will never really be finished with the move. Remember, it is so easy to be discouraged when you are tired. Hopelessness seems to creep in, too. Don’t listen to that nonsense from the evil one.

  28. Linda – Emily is not the problem at all. She is very helpful with various things, including the work she does with her dad. I don’t mind that she relies on me to babysit when she is working with Lee or going to her classes. (The state standards for these classes are very strict on how many times one can be tardy or absent.) She doesn’t take advantage of me by asking me to watch Forrest much at all apart from those two things. And she expresses her appreciation, too.

No, the problem is R, who is only interested in having Forrest when it is convenient for him. He has proven, time & time again over the past two & a half years, to be utterly unreliable. The fact that he is blowing off his responsibilities as spelled out by this custody agreement is kind of amazing to me. He really does think it is there for his personal benefit.

  29. Jo & Mumsee – Oh yes, I definitely feel that it is my God-given privilege & responsibility to help Emily with Forrest. Lee believes so, too.

I may have burst out crying on learning the change in plans, & I may have been grumpy about it for a while, but when it came time to take care of Forrest, I put that all behind me & put a smile on my face.

  30. Kathaleena – The McKs said they will be out by the 31st. But they’d also previously said they’d be out by the 15th.

Sooooo…We made an appointment to have the carpets cleaned next Wednesday, April 2, & let them know. That way they have to be out.

We are a bit perturbed that they’ve only been coming over for a while in the evenings, when we know that one is not working (unless she recently got a job – unlikely), & another (the mom) only works part-time.

  31. I think the meerkat is cute.

A note about Emily: She has certainly stepped up to the plate in her responsibilities as a mother, & as a member of our household. She has matured a lot over the past few years. Lee & I are pleased & proud to say that she is an excellent mother.

The reason she is taking this LPN program is so she can better provide for her son one day. And as I said, she helps out a lot around the house, & especially with outdoors chores (the crazy girl loves to shovel snow!), as well as working for Lee a couple mornings a week.

Janice – We have two cats – Angel & Rudy – along with our dog Heidi.

  32. Karen, I think I remember your cats now. I had a neighbor friend with a nice cat named Rudy.

I can tell Emily is very responsible. She is involved on so many levels. One day I expect she will find her way to faith in Jesus.

Just wondering, Karen, do you think R might be having a little bit of attention deficit disorder going on? From what you have written about him it sounds like a possibility.

  33. Hang in there Karen — call me an optimist, but I think your tenants will actually be out on the 31st (by midnight? 🙂 ). That was a good idea to schedule the carpet cleaning for just a couple days later.

Nice to hear, too, about Emily’s growth — you have good daughters.

The meerkats seem charming, but I’ve never been attracted to the pointy nosed, claw look. Looks too much like a rat, which, frankly, always give me the shivers.

Smart move with the rug cleaning, Karen. I guess we could wish a nap for you! 🙂
