Good Morning!

We had duck, duck, duck last week. Today’s header photo is finally the goose.

In 1634 Lord Baltimore founded the Catholic colony of Maryland.

In 1776 the Continental Congress authorized a medal for General George Washington.

In 1813 the frigate USS Essex flew the first U.S. flag in battle in the Pacific.

In 1857 Frederick Laggenheim took the first photo of a solar eclipse.

And in 1911, in New York City, 146 women were killed in fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company in New York City. The owners of the company were indicted on manslaughter charges because some of the employees had been behind locked doors in the factory. The owners were later acquitted and in 1914 they were ordered to pay damages to each of the twenty-three families that had sued.

  1. Morning all, just a few more hours until my next grandchild is born. I may have to stay up and wait til 1 or 2 am. No idea if it is a boy or girl.
Sadly, I just left my ipad at Bible study so can’t do facetime, will have to rely on skype.

  3. Chas,

Yes, several in fact, during the war of 1812.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Essex_(1799)

“The first USS Essex of the United States Navy was a 36-gun [2] or 32-gun[3] sailing frigate that participated in the Quasi-War with France, the First Barbary War, and in the War of 1812. The British captured her in 1814 and she then served as HMS Essex until sold at public auction on 6 June 1837.”

“Essex sailed in South Atlantic waters and along the coast of Brazil until January 1813, decimating the British whaling fleet in the Pacific. Although her crew suffered greatly from a shortage of provisions and heavy gales while rounding Cape Horn, she anchored safely at Valparaíso, Chile, on 14 March, having seized whaling schooners Elizabeth and Nereyda along the way. In the next five months, Essex captured thirteen British whalers, including Essex Junior, (ex-Atlantic) which cruised in company with her captor to the Island of Nuku Hiva for repairs. Porter put his executive officer John Downes in command of that ship. In January 1814, Essex sailed into neutral waters at Valparaíso, only to be trapped there for six weeks by the British frigate, HMS Phoebe (36 guns), under Captain James Hillyar, and the sloop-of-war HMS Cherub (18 guns). On 28 March 1814, Porter determined to gain the open sea, fearing the arrival of British reinforcements. Upon rounding the point, Essex lost her main top-mast to foul weather and was brought to action just north of Valparaíso.”

they posted that they are on the way to the hospital. I think that I need a nap.
so glad that there is nothing on the calendar for tomorrow – perfect timing
Though I am thinking of going back to the store and buying flea bombs.
I am still afraid to sleep in my bed. In a two room flat, there are not a lot of choices of where to sleep. If I get the bombs I will have to spend the day at school and stay out of here.
At least that would eliminate fleas as a possibility.
Some have mentioned bed bugs and that really fills me with dread

  5. Jo, your mention of “flee bombs” reminds me. I thought of it earlier, but didn’t think it would apply.

When we bought our first house in 1965, we discovered, when we moved in, that it was infested with roaches. We put out powder, etc. but nothing worked. Then, when we were going on vacation, I bought one of those poison bombs. It was supposed to kill everything.
So, we got ready to leave, everything and everyone in the car. I set off the bomb in the middle of the house and we left for about a week. We didn’t have any roaches when we returned.

  6. Hello everyone. Many changes as work. More responsibilities. Change is inevitable, you you adapt and move on.
I haven’t been around much the past few days. I have been escaping into a book and I have to watch Dancing with the Stars. One of the best dancers this season is a para-olympian. She is a snow boarder. She lost both of her legs from the knees down when she was 19!!!! Amazing what the right attitude and spirit will do for you. Last night she did a swing dance. She joked about her legs flying off during the dance. She scored really well.
On the flip side is Candace Cameron Bure (sp) who was on Growing Pains I think. She is a professing Christian and stated that her relationship with Jesus is the most important relationship in her life. She refused to do certain dance moves and a few other things based on her Christianity. I am sorry, but I am put off by people who make a spectacle of how good of a Christian they are. I understand having the “pulpit” so so speak and using it to advance the Kingdom of God, but I still stand by my thinking that if you are as good of Christian as you tell me you are, I will figure it out and don’t have to be told by you. She got really low scores and I can see her being one of the first ones off the show.
Not that Dancing with the Stars is all that important in the scheme of my life, but it is interesting to observe the people.

  9. Good Morning, Y’all!
Kim…I know what you mean about people making a spectacle. I have often felt that way…however, on the other side of the coin, it would be unfair to expect people to tone down their beliefs just because they are in the public eye. I’m OK if she was just stating why she wouldn’t participate in certain moves.

Her brother won’t do romantic scenes with any actress other than his wife…

Please add me to your prayer list as I enter a new challenge. I have been elected to the board of deacons at our church.

  10. I think I once got bed bug bites from being at a theater. Those were terrible bites. They were giant, in a row and on my back. I think they bit me and returned to hiding so I did not bring them home. You can look them up on the web to rule them out. Some people bring them home after flying. Maybe they get in luggage from other people’s luggage? Or perhaps they are in the seats like those at the theater. I had on a thin material blouse when I got bit. During winter perhaps they stay on clothing when they can’t quickly get a bite and hide in the seat again. Now everyone will be itching after reading this.

  11. I guess if someone has quantity time with a person it will probably become apparent that they are Christian. People in the performing arts don’t have much time to let the average Joe and Jill who sees them perform know much else about them. I don’t watch the dancing show, but I don’t think the dancing by itsdlf would be enough to know if someone is a Christian. So, if allowed by the show producers to mention that Christian beliefs and values drives their performance and also gives credit to God for their abilities, I don’t have a problem with it. It is taking a moment captive to give glory to God. That being said, I did not see how her delivery was made of the message. Some inappropriate deliveries could detract from God’s image. So I think that is what you are getting at Kim. She had an inappropriate delivery?

  12. IBNO, I am encouraged that you take the position of deacon seriously. Some consider it a position of honor, not service. It hurts when people don’t take their jobs seriously.

An officer once asked me about my bro-in-law before appointing him to a position in the Lions. I said that I doubted that he would take the position because he is involved in many other things. But, “if he takes the job, he’ll do the work”. that’s one of the best things you can say about a person.
“If he takes the job , he’ll do the work.”
He, BTW, took the job and does the work.

  13. Goose!

Bed bugs are among my worst fears.

Chas, I wonder if whatever you used to rid the house of roaches is even available for sale anymore? I moved into a small 1920s apartment once and noticed roaches so I used that powder they sold at the hardware store to sprinkle all over the floorboards, in closets, etc. Never saw another one. The managers later (when I moved out) chided me for not having come to them to get a professional in there, but I was afraid they’d think I brought them with me!

But Janice is right, there are photos online of what the bites typically look like — and I think they’re visible to the eye by lifting up mattresses, etc.

    OK, now I’m scratching.

On the ‘dancing’ contestant Kim talked about: I mentioned on an earlier thread about that statement attributed (probably falsely) to St. Francis of Assisi about preaching the gospel and using words (only) if necessary. But the gospel is a proclamation — to think that anyone would understand the gospel by seeing how “good” I am is showing a lack of humility at the very least. Now there are ways to convey it ways not to convey it; perhaps the person’s delivery or the timing was just inappropriate. But my hat’s off to those who do proclaim the gospel publicly among those who probably are hostile, it isn’t always (ever? for some of us) easy — and in Hollywood will likely only backfire and be mocked.

Praying for the new grandchild, Jo — and hope you can get some sleep around it all!

For a number of years I have been using Nature’s Helper. Don’t look for it in the store. God gives it freely. As the weather gets colder, leave your heat off until it is warmer outside than inside. The roaches will find warmer homes and you don’t have to put out substances that you would rather not have in your home. Saves money on heating, too. May not be practical in some climates though.

  17. Duck, duck, goose! So, if two of them are called “geese”, why isn’t a plurality of moose called “meese”? Two are oxen, why not two “boxen”? Two “foxen”? One mouse, two mice; one house, two “hice”? Take, took, taken, but not bake, book, “baken”. Speak, spoke, spoken, but not leak, “loke”, “loken”. Funny thing, our language.

  18. Sometimes. If the word ends in a consonant you add -es for plural. But you also add it to articles and adjectives for plural nouns. Of course, there is also the gender of nouns, which makes some adjectives have a feminine form as well as masculine and plural forms.

  20. Yesterday, Emily worked with Lee in the morning, & went to school in the evening. According to the custody agreement, R was supposed to pick up Forrest at 10a.m. & keep him all day & overnight.

He never showed up, & never called.

When Emily got home from work, she called him. He said he was sick & didn’t have use of a car.

So that’s two days out of three, so far, that he hasn’t shown up. He doesn’t even bother to call.

(The reason he doesn’t have use of a car is because he got caught with lapsed registration. Then, I guess while saving up money to pay for the registration, he cancelled his auto insurance.

Now his car is registered, but he can’t afford the auto insurance. Emily explained to me that one’s auto insurance will automatically go up if it had been cancelled or lapsed.

He has had the use, at times, of his girlfriend’s car or his mom’s car.)

Then Holly arrived with the siblings, I got to spend 45 minutes watching them meet their brother for the first time and listening to all that was said. What a blessing. I think God is storing up special rewatds in heaven for what you are doing to help Emily and Forrest and even the dad.

I did talk to my friend on the phone today and she said she tested positive for the flu this week. She already has lung problems so that is a worry. She said the doctor told her there are still a surprising number of flu cases around this area. Hope that is not what I was exposed to. 😦

  31. I was thinking of her earlier today. Emily, who is studying to be an LPN, was explaining to me that the medical definition of “lethargic” is different from the common understanding of the word. We tend to think of one who is very sleepy & has no energy as being lethargic, but the medical meaning is that the patient cannot be woken up.

I thought of sharing that little factoid here, as I just did, & thought, “Phos/Roscuro would know about that.” (Then I came up with the name “Phoscuro” for her. 🙂 )

    I hope she is okay.

  32. The word lethargic comes from the Greek myth about the river Lethe. Drinking from this river would cause complete forgetfulness or oblivion. So I guess if you’re unconscious, you’re oblivious, hence lethargic. Makes sense.
