Good Morning!

And Happy Saturday!

Today’s header photo is another pet rock. This one belongs to Janice. 🙂

On this day in 1457 the Gutenberg Bible became the first printed book.

In 1733 Joseph Priestly invented carbonated water (seltzer).

In 1765 the Stamp Act was passed. It was the first direct British tax on the American colonists. It was repealed on March 17, 1766.

In 1871 William Holden of North Carolina became the first governor to be removed by impeachment.

In 1903 Niagara Falls ran out of water due to a drought.

And in 1935 Persia was renamed Iran.

  1. Good morning! I hardly slept again last night–must be getting close to “that time of the month.” But, I started reading a new book, The Relentless Tenderness of Jesus, by Brennan Manning (who also wrote The Ragamuffin Gospel), and it’s really good.

  2. I’m also reading a good book, not too late here yet.
A very quiet Saturday. Filled my kitchen sink with boiling water to wash my linens as I am covered with bites. Then used the washing machine which only has cold water. i also sprayed for fleas. I will win this battle.

  3. Mornin’, Chas!

I love Jars of Clay. As a baby Christian, I’d listen to their song Love Song for a Savior with tears streaming down my face… Still love to belt it out any time it comes on the radio (and, no, I don’t sing well)!
Which reminds me of something funny that happened with L. the other day. I’d picked up L. and a couple of her friends from the movies. On the drive home, one of my favorite songs came on. Not thinking about it, I began to sing along. L. was mortified and chastised me once her friends were all dropped off. Seems almost everything is embarrassing when you’re 14!!!

I remember when L. got lice at age four. Before I realized she had them, I’d become infested. The over the counter remedies wouldn’t kill them. We had to get a prescription. At that time, I was using a fruity shampoo (mango scented) and somehow ended up with fruit flies nesting in my hair. I learned they were fruit flies by taking one of the bugs to the exterminators. Talk about an embarrassing moment! Needless to say, I threw away the mango shampoo!

  5. I have used a fine tooth comb on many head lice. But Jo needs diatomaceous earth. When cousin had an infestation in her apt in Korea, I sent her some. She sprinkled it under the bed, on the mattress, between the sheets. Then she moved and didn’t have the problem again. But she was not reporting more bites after application so it might have been the earth and why did the fleas not move with her if it didn’t help? She just moved to another apartment. Who knows the mind of a flea? Praying for you Jo, it has to be annoying.

  6. I got flea spray in the store. It is what they use on dog beds. If I have fleas in here they might have come in through the floor boards. Several years ago a few of us had flea bites and we found that a stray dog was sleeping under or next to our homes.
Feel free to send me some diatomaceous earth!
Here, if a boy has lice, they just shave his head. One of my students did not want to tell his parents, til we told his sister.
Singing in the car creates wonderful memories. perhaps not when their friends are present though.
Mumsee, everytime I start to write ‘kids’ I have to stop and rephrase my sentence, knowing that you will catch me.

  7. Btw, thank you so much to all of you who have prayed for me and Becca. We could still use it, but she has made so much progress, both academically and emotionally that it is truly remarkable. She started reading on a first grade level and is now at 3.5. She rarely has meltdowns, anymore. We’ve become so much closer. She’s smiling again!!! So, thank you, from the bottom of my heart. I am so grateful.

  8. I think that pet rock is a prehistoric version of rocks before they “evoled” into the more refined variety. Notice all the protective armor my son put on it. If you look closely you will see a tear drop from excess glue from the glue gun. I think the poor rock is crying under the weight of all that armor.
Obviously from the design people can tell that son never outgrew his love for dinosaurs.

  10. I use borax to handle fleas. As far as head lice. Lice do not like clean hair so spending a day with mayo in your hair will solve two problems…a conditioner and a killer. If you don’t have that kind of time plain old dog or cat flea shampoo will work. A friend of mine’s husband is a vet. 😉

Chas, I haven’t run away yet. Everything is better in the light of day. As a matter of fact I am about to go outside and take some photos of azaleas and email them to AJ.
I am still shut out of my yahoo account so if you need to send me anything it can go to Kimberley, South Africa B as in Boy, Hurlburt Field Air Force Base in Florida at gmail dot com

Yesterday was hard for several reasons. One of the men I work for brought another lady and me a note about 4:30 asking us to leave work. He had something unpleasant to do and it would be best if we weren’t there. There were only three cars besides his left in the parking lot. I am worried about which one I won’t see on Monday.

Today is my Fish Fry. Fried Fish, raspberry cole slaw, garlic cheese grits, black bean and corn salad, hush puppies, key lime cheese cake with Arnold Palmer iced tea.

  11. Kim, when I got lice from foster kids, I’d heard about the mayo treatment. So I put a lot of mayo in my hair, covered it all with a shower cap, and for several hours I put up with melting mayo running down my face. But as far as I know it killed none of the lice. The only thing that worked for me was to wet my hair and comb through with my fingernails; every louse of any size that I found, I rinsed down the drain with hot water. I did that every two days until I could find no more live lice. Then a nurse friend went through my hair looking for eggs and removed all she saw. Based on hatching over the next couple weeks, she missed about 100. I continued to do the wet-my-hair-and-finger-comb until I’d seen no more for several attempts. I also washed all my sheets and all of that, but basically I figured that with only me in the house, all of them would eventually make their way to me and that would work. And it did. I had them twice, and no “remedies” worked either time except patient finger-combing (but my hair had to be wet for me to “catch” lice that way, for some reason) . And I have a lot of hair. (People who cut my hair always comment on that.)

  12. When I worked in preschool it was almost the end of the year when a boy in the class had a case of head lice. On the last day of class when I was going to say sad goodbyes to the students, the only one who showed up was the little boy with the shaved head. That made it an even more sad day for me. Word had gotten out about the lice and no one wanted exposure.

We never got them at our house.

  13. We did have fleas from having pets go in and out of the house. What worked for us was flea bombs or foggers. We liked to do them when we were going on vacation because you have to be out of the house for a few hours and then you open windows and let fog escape. I did not want to be around for a few days since it seemed like a strong treatment. Sometimes two treatments are required to get all the newly hatched from eggs that were not killed with the first app. It was very effective and much less costly than an exterminator.

When I taught school I cringed and started scratching my head when I would get to school and see two latex gloves and some extra long, wooden cotton swabs. One poor little girl could not get rid of them and would cry and cry that she had washed her hair with everything there was. That’s how I discovered the mayo trick and the dirty hair. One of the more experienced teachers pointed out to me that the dirty children never had lice. She also explained that I didn’t need to spend a lot of time on the black children’s hair, just enough for appearances. Their hair is of a texture that doesn’t lend itself to lice.

  17. Oh good grief people, reading all this has made me start to itch all over.

Never had lice, thankfully. Fleas are mostly the animals’ issue so we’re on the monthly Trifexis (flea/heartworm protection) pill for the dogs and Frontline or Advantage for cats on Annie (which reminds me, she’s overdue for a treatment).

When I had carpet, I used Fleabusters, a powdery formula (probably borax-like) and that worked well to get it out of the house, but I no longer have carpet which is better at keep indoor fleas at bay anyway.

I had some odd dreams last night — involving watching a movie, being at a concert with several people I know, a bunch of strange dogs, a coyote and walking through some snow in sandals (but it wasn’t that cold) to retrieve a work bag I’d dropped behind the seats at the movie. Turns out the area behind my aisle was a big snowy outdoor trench.

Another dream had me sliding into a sand pit and trying to get out. Talk about symbolic. 😉

I’ve always been a very prolific and vivid dreamer.

*Somebody* was supposed to pick up *Somebody Else* today, & have him from 9am to 4pm. *Somebody* never showed, nor answered his text messages nor a phone call.

*Somebody* may think that this arrangement means he can have *Somebody Else* on those days & at those times if he feels like it.

  26. I was thinking the same thing, Jo, about Karen & Emily documenting all of that with times and witnesses if ever needed. It’ll be interesting what the “reason” will be. Maybe he just forgot? Not cool.

  27. Oh yes, we are both documenting this. I don’t know how relevant this would be to the court, but he made plans to meet Emily & Forrest at a BounceTown in another town, then never showed up. Emily said Forrest was telling everyone he talked to that his daddy was going to come.

Emily says that what I said above, that he may think that this arrangement means he can have Forrest on those days & at those times if he feels like it, is true. He doesn’t get that this arrangement is supposed to be for Forrest’s benefit, but he thinks it’s all about him.

    *Somebody’s* gonna get a wake-up call.

Believe it or not, I was not frustrated. I was a bit disappointed to not be able to do the things I’d planned to do, but it was more important to me to take care of my little guy, giving him the love & attention he needs. And he had lots of outdoor play time today, which was good.

As I watched the hours tick by (this is Emily’s full day at school), & then eventually realized he wasn’t going to show up at all, I just shook my head, & wondered at his arrogance. But this will work out for Emily’s & Forrest’s good, we are hoping.

BTW, have I mentioned lately how adorable & sweet my grandson is? 🙂

I really overslept this morning, almost missed church — by the time i woke up (I’d been awake earlier to the animals out, etc., but fell back into a very deep, dream-filled sleep after that) I had virtually 25 minutes to get ready plus feed the animals. I was a whirlwind, I hardly ever sleep that late. But I managed to pick up my ride in time and we got to church early. Whew.

And called husband at the office so he told me to try the breaker. Thank goodness the stove was on its own breaker. Of course the house stinks of smoke from burnt fish and I can’t open the door and turn on the ceiling fan because Bosley will scoot out. I guess I will be smelling like burnt fish smoke when I go to church in a little while. 😦

  36. Excitement! I had a dryer fire a couple years ago. We get reminded of how fast we can move at the whiff of fire & smoke. (Luckily, dryer and clothes survived, but I did have to get someone out to take it apart, get all the lint cleared away & put a new belt in.)

Our church is starting something new tonight, titled something like spend a year in the Bible, but I have to dig through our bulletin today to see if I can find out a little bit more about it.

Some interesting points from our morning sermon (on Rom. 8:18) about how perhaps Christians & the church have become so “sleepy” in the west is because we’ve become so “comfy” with the world.

Speaking specifically about issues such as the sanctity of life and marriage: “our understanding of beginnings and the makeup and purpose of creation are being wiped off the table like wrappers after a meal. Perhaps a more intense suffering would refine the church …”

Haven’t heard R’s excuse for yesterday yet. But Emily & Chrissy have been out all day dress shopping, for their cousin’s wedding next week. So it’s possible Emily has received an answer to her texts by now. (She had texted him this morning to confirm whether or not he’s picking up Forrest tomorrow at 10, as the arrangement states.)

    Like

  38. Thanks, Mumsee. Emily has been keeping a journal of many things – good & bad. I am documenting how well this custody agreement goes, so if R does something good, I’ll include it, in the interest of fairness.

So, Emily finally got a hold of R on the phone. He said he will “try” to pick up Forrest tomorrow. She asked him where he was on Saturday, & he said he didn’t know.

    Huh?

Mondays are the day when Emily works with Lee (leaving around 5 or 5:30 a.m., back home around noon or so), then leaves for school at 4:15 p.m. (getting home around 10:30 p.m.). According to the custody agreement, R is supposed to pick Forrest up at 10 a.m., keep him all day & overnight, & then drop him off at the library for StoryTime on Tuesday at 10 a.m., with Emily meeting him there.

So I don’t yet know if I will have time to work on some things I need to do, or if I will be babysitting some or all of the day. He doesn’t think it’s important to clue in others about his plans.
