Prayer Requests 2-4-14

Anyone have a request or praise to share today?

Psalm 14

¹The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.

The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.

They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge? who eat up my people as they eat bread, and call not upon the Lord.

There were they in great fear: for God is in the generation of the righteous.

Ye have shamed the counsel of the poor, because the Lord is his refuge.

Oh that the salvation of Israel were come out of Zion! when the Lord bringeth back the captivity of his people, Jacob shall rejoice, and Israel shall be glad.

  1. Delivering bread to Walmart, Lee slipped on ice & fell flat on his back, hard. (He did not hit his head, thank God.) Please pray for healing of any aches or pains or injuries that may have resulted. Thank you.

Emily tells me that this Walmart (I don’t know what others do) puts plenty of salt out front for their customers, but very little out back for their employees & vendors.

  2. Ouch, prayers Karen! Do you think he needs to go to a doctor to get checked out? Would Walmart pay? He’ll no doubt be sore for a while.

Pray for me this morning as our ‘projects’ editor (at another newspaper) is wanting me to do a group-wide Valentine’s story but I’m afraid her idea my be a bit risqué for my taste? I’m not sure yet, and my editor said he wasn’t sure either what she wanted, but from what he initially relayed to me it sounded like something I might have trouble doing (and he agreed, he knows I have “scruples”). She’s supposed to call me today to discuss it.

My editor said I should to come up with an alternate idea for her, just in case, and I’m at a loss on that front. Valentine’s is so cliche, we’ve literally done all the stories there are to do it seems like.

She does like my writing so I’m flattered that she picks me for some of these group-wide projects, but I’m a little worried about this one!

  3. Prayer for husband this morning as he is on a phone interview to look at the Toronto job. Wisdom for him. He knows he is essential here, but he also knows it is essential he pay his bills. Thanks.

  4. Donna, what an opportunity to stand up for the message of Valentine. Let’s see, the story is that the emperor had declared no more marriage so the young men would be willing and able to go fight in the wars. But Valentine believed in the tradition of marriage so went ahead and had the ceremony for the young men to marry the young women, went to prison for it, and was put to death. He was standing in support of marriage the way it was designed. What is not to like? Oh wait, you live in California…it is “just” a story anyway, never mind.

  5. You can never have too many stories of real love. I think of Louie Zamperini and his wife and other people like my parents who have taken seriously, “for richer or for poorer; in sickness and in health.” Real romance, instead of shallow, self-centered love from others is a dream for everyone. We seldom hear about those who really have been married for many, many years and , in spite of bad times, have stayed together.

  6. mumsee, gay is the only kind of popular marriage story out here these days. 😉

Maybe the cowboys on the hill do some kind of valentine’s trail ride or something … but it’s got to extend to all the papers, can’t be all that local. And it must be hip and edgy and cleverly written.

  7. Kathaleena, true; although I think we have done the married-for-a-really-long-time couples story several times. We’ve also done the most romantic dates, places, on and on — these holiday stories just get worked over year after year, decade after decade, with some new spin to them.

So they’re always looking for something new and fresh and cutting edge. … This story they may be thinking of I think has something to do with “things” you can find on amazon … beyond that, I don’t know any other details. And I think I am afraid to ask!

Maybe it’ll all be innocent, who knows, but my editor seemed to think I might have “issues” with it.

  8. How about valentine’s day when you have no valentine? Or, the year for Bible study, I treated all those widows to starbucks? Here’s the blog link: http://michelleule.com/2011/02/14/my-bible-study-valentine/

    Here’s another one: http://michelleule.com/2013/02/12/valentines-day-and-unusual-meetings/

Why not call the local senior center to find out unusual things that have been done? Call a couple churches to see what they have planned? Try the food bank–do they do anything different?

Maybe talk with local elementary teachers to see if/what they do about valentine’s day has changed over the years? You could include Charlie Brown’s continuing agony of the little red hair girl and how that has affected school valentine’s day.

Just a couple more harmless suggestions. I’m off to Bible study myself, starting a new series, new women and Eve.

  9. Donna, how about a really edgy look at why one Catholic Church holiday, out of the whole calendar of saints’ days, has survived the Reformation, the Puritan movement and the secularist movement. If you write it, I’d like to read it, because I was wondering about that the other day.

  10. I have more to write on this to explain about it, but that may take a little while, as I have something else to do, but in the meantime, please pray for Emily to see Jesus TODAY. Another emotional crisis happened (which I’ll write about), & I’m praying the Holy Spirit will prompt her to call out to God, & that when she does, His truth & grace & love will be quickened to her heart. Thank you.

(I’ll post the explanation a bit later on Our Daily Thread. If you’re guessing this has anything to do with R, you’d be right.)

  11. Donna, write about Puppy Love, or Kitty Love or anything like that. I was single and did not date AT ALL for 4 years. Everyone knows that Amos is the love of my life. If you don’t have a Valentine or significant other why not share all that love you have to give wth a pet and give them their Forever Home. You are a Pet Writer. There are lots of ways to show love.
BG and Paul understand the special relationship I have with Amos. He healed my broken heart and allowed me to love again. He also was the reason I got out of bed some days.

  12. Good point, Kim, find the pet angle on Thanksgiving. What’s the best pet, the worst, to give as a valentine’s present. Anyone ever get a pet for a valentine’s gift? 🙂

    Bunnies . . . ?

  13. I was thinking the same about the pet angle considering how Bosley has stolen our hearts. I tell her sometimes she is a hesrt grabber and doesn’t let go. Is there a valentine’s story on rescue animals adopted on Valentine’s Day? Does the shelter have record of one adopted last Valentine’s Day and how its life has changed? Or even a story about supportinv a child through Compassion as a way to show true love. Jeff Goins is doing writing on his blog aboug going to Africa to visit the child he and his wife support.

  14. Bullet dodged, turns out features already was planning a big blow-out piece on dating (there’s something we’ve never done before!) so the projects editor told me she was just going to try to massage that into an a1 story instead for Val’s Day. She did, however, fill me in a little more on her original idea and I think it was something I actually could have done, but it’s been cancelled for now.
