Our Daily Thread 11-13-13

Good Morning!

On this day in 1775, during the American Revolution, U.S. forces captured Montreal.

In 1789 Benjamin Franklin wrote a letter to a friend in which he said, “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes.”

In 1805 Johann George Lehner, a Viennese butcher, invented a recipe and called it the “frankfurter.”

In 1927 the Holland Tunnel opened to the public, providing access between New York City and New Jersey beneath the Hudson River.

In 1982 the Vietnam Veterans Memorial was dedicated in Washington, DC.

And in 1995 Greg Maddox (Atlanta Braves) became the first major league pitcher to win four consecutive Cy Young Awards.

Quote of the Day

“You cannot run away from weakness; you must some time fight it out or perish; and if that be so, why not now, and where you stand?”

Today is Russ Lee’s birthday.

Today is George Whitefield Chadwick’s birthday too.

And today in 1968 this movie premiered in the US. I only bring it up so I can ask a question.

What were you people thinking? 😯

  1. We are in Pigeon Forge, Tn.
There are good people in the world. I don’t know how it happened, but I lost my cell phone. We were in a coffee shop when I discovered it. So, I went back, tracing my steps, trying to find my phone. No luck. As I was returning, a lady came up, hollering, “Are you Charlie?” “Yes” “I have your cell phone.” Turns out, she found my phone, opened it and called Elvera (long distance) on my speed dial. Elvera described this tall, thin (she didn’t say “ugly”) guy named Charlie in a checkered shirt. The lady came out and found me.
I was real happy to get it back. I don’t want to have to buy one of those fancy new phones.

I don’t know how I can lose a cell phone. It’s in a holster on my belt. It requires a release to get out of the holster.

  2. We went to see the Christmas show at the Smoky Mountain Opry in Pigeon Forge. When I see something spelled “Opry” I expect at least a bit of country. But this was all up town. I guess there’s no copyright on “Opry”. We enjoyed it, but I don’t care for the modern rendition of familiar Christmas songs.

  3. Now that’s a colorful wakeup! In a yellow submarine of all places.

Glad you got your cell phone back, Chas. That it went missing sounds like a mystery to me. You probably need to make sure the holster doesn’t have a crack in it that let it come lose.

It is in the 20’s this morning,, but at least the wind has gone away. After totally clearing the carport of leaves there are some new gatherings. It is like they have a tent meeting in our carport. It is their purgatory before going.to the way of all dust and dead leaves.

  4. After a 13 hour round trip yesterday, we brought home our first ATV. Now, we don’t have to rely on the kindness of our neighbours to plough our snow. We’re very thankful for a good deal on a used one (the reason we had to go so far) and that it has everything we need! It was also a fun trip as we got to see country I hadn’t been through before and we met our daughter for supper on the way home.

We’re exhausted today, however. I’m glad it’s an easy day at work.

Chas, I like most of the new renditions of any Christmas music. I love Christmas music. Some songs have been worked over so much, though, that they don’t resemble a carol or even anything Christmassy.

  5. Good Morning everyone. This morning we all awoke to a balmy 19 degrees here in OKC. My daughter, who is living in our house in Canton posted a picture of her car covered in Snow. Her comment was “So it begins”. One of her friends from Virginia Beach replied back “Miss the beach yet”. Virginia Beach even had snow yesterday.

Since today is the anniversary of the Dedication of the Vietnam War Memorial, I thought this would be appropriate for those of us that served in a War that everyone wanted to forget.

  6. Speaking of lost Cell phones, Eric Bolling of FOX’s the “Five” had his cell phone stolen. The thing that upset him was that he had some irreplaceable video of his son on the phone and he cautioned parents to make back ups of photos and videos. A couple of weeks ago I thought I had lost my phone. The first thing I thought of.as all the stuff I had on the Kid that I hadn’t backed up..

  7. I just read about a new virus out there called CryptoLocker that locks your files and requires a ransom to release. If you don’t pay in 72 hours, it encrypts everything with military grade encryption which cannot be opened, even by the virus authors. You lose access to everything and must wipe the hard drive and start over. I backed up all my photos and videos, and burned them on discs. I don’t care about the rest, so I ain’t payin’. 🙂

  8. Mozy for phones? 🙂

I’m off to visit the Genius Bar today at my Apple store. IOS7 has made my two products frustrating to use (or not). I anticipate one of two things:
    1. A teenage employee will greet me, do three things and it will be fixed before I even get into the store.

    or

    2. They’ll tell me 18 months is too long for Ipad2 and I need a new one. (I’m not sure they’ll even touch my used iphone3GS, that’s so ancient–three years–but then I’ll just use it for a phone and laugh all the way to the bank. I hope.).

I don’t mind being shown ignorant by a teenager as long as it doesn’t cost me any money . . . !

  9. Chas, glad you got your phone back. Some years ago (’08?) I lost the first iPhone I got (after only about 3 months) and it was akin to a tragedy. 😉 I loved that phone and it never did show up, so my best guess is I’d dropped it and someone decided they’d keep it. Not much stored on it at the time (and I still won’t do banking on my phone). But I keep some password ‘hints’ on my current phone for sites I use regularly for work, etc.

I’m still wary of downloading the IOS7 — my iPad also is ancient so I definitely would not try putting it on that, but I’ve even held off installing it on my newer iPhone.

I never saw Yellow Submarine — but I remember the first time I heard the song on the radio. My friend and I were swimming in the neighbor’s pool when it came on. As we walked home, two teenage girls with long wet hair on a lazy, California summer’s day, we kept singing it. Sweet memory.

    Back to JFK today.

  10. Oh, and today’s the last day for us to sign up for our new benefits. I’ve decided to stay with the Aetna PPO and I’ll just hope I never have to use it for anything major. 🙂 But at least the premium only went up $8 a month this year, unlike in past years when it’s taken some rather giant leaps. Ouch. But I’ll get to keep my doctors.

Our modified Kaiser plan this year — the only other option offered — has cheaper premiums (by about $60 a month, which was tempting) but now has gone into the deductible formula just like the PPO, so it’s not all that much cheaper in the the long run (though the deductibles are less than the PPO’s).

Next year, of course, all bets are off for employer-sponsored health care, so I guess I should enjoy it while I can get it. It’s definitely cheaper than the policies I hear about being offered through Obamacare, at least.

  11. MIM, I just saw your note on yesterday’s thread about the story that Inhofe was challenging the theory of gravity. I did find the story, but it was on the satire site newslo.com

  12. Tychicus,

Yes, I’ve read a similar story on it. What I found interesting was their insistence that they aren’t a pseudo- religion. But they have churches, and sing, and worship. (themselves)

    Nope, doesn’t sound like a religion to me…. 🙄

  13. My phone is a 2002 model. My first ever cell phone. When Elvera’s battery went dead, she bought another phone and regrets it. I bought another battery for mine. My phone takes pictures. I have four on it. I need to transfer them. I’ll get Chuck to show me how when they come for the party.

We went to Gatlinburg today. We don’t know why. We just do it.

  14. Emily upgraded her cell phone today to a smart phone (for free due to a rebate or something). She wanted a smart phone so she can take screen shots of some of the harassing & vile texts a certain someone often sends.

He sent her porn photos the other day, saying that she was the woman in the photos. 😦

  15. Oy. Worked until 8 tonight trying to get this jfk story done, but I’m just not happy with it. Editor who assigned it (at another paper) says I need to get it to her asap tomorrow morning.

So I decided to stop for the night and take a fresh look at it tomorrow. Maybe I’ll dream of the perfect lede. I don’t like the one I have now, which is like the 5th one I’ve tried. Ugh.
